News Conor McKenna tests positive for COVID-19 - Wait, what?

No, but the numbers say he's running a leaky ship. He'd better hope the public behaves so the genie can be put back in the bottle.

Its absurd to suggest the natural social behaviour of Australians changes based on geography. It’s population density and less sun. UV light kills the virus and vitamin d protects against it.

I think you'll find Ron has made his mind up.

Well you seem to be advocating for the protesters' right to march over the vast number of other Victorians' right to not get sick or die.

My perception is that those who marched in the face of danger are more likely to sit in the Greens part of the spectrum rather than mainstream Labor.

Maybe you're just a contrarian for the sake of it, and don't actually stand for anything.

You just jump to the conclusion of labelling people with an identity.

I thought the protest was stupid due to the timing and people shouldn't have gone. I also recognise that the very nature of it - you know, a protest - meant it would happen anyway.

This conversation started because you said something very stupid - "Just say it's illegal and send out cops with AK47s!!". That's not how it works, Ron, if you actually look at how our society and government functions, which is why I replied to you.

You then went again with something even more stupid - just it like they do in the Philippines. As I pointed out, the Filipino government literally has death squads who go around carrying out extrajudicial killings. It's an enormous human rights issue.

No, I don't think a more progressive, secular and civilised nation like Australian should or will go down that route. God help us if we did.

Your response? "You lefties!"

Pull your head out of your arse, honestly. Whatever happened to people actually using their brains?

i think the two extremes have forgotten about the masses between them that are by and large centrist.
it's a shame we're stuck in the middle of their playground spats. i feel dumber for it

It's just ridiculous. All this "left" and "right" horseshit actually means little to most Australians who wouldn't identify with either. Not so long ago you barely heard about it. Then certain sections of the media (namely Rupert, who isn't even an Australian any more) started promoting less and less representative voices - very loudly - who just bang on about it endlessly. Some people then appear to have chosen a "team" and so they have to assign everybody into these stupid boxes.

No surprises the AFL bending over backwards again for their favourite team.
The best option would have been for Essendon to forfeit the games against Melbourne, Carlton and Collingwood and continue the season.
This will come back to bite the AFL because they never make the tough decisions, season will be over when half the Carlton list get the virus.

I'm really dubious that McKenna only came into close contact with one player, I hope this isn't the usual short term, sweep it under the rug response the AFL has that will come back to bite them when players get infected across multiple teams.

Beat me to it, imagine if instead of one or two players getting infected at Essendon multiple teams get infected, how ****ed is Gillon going to be then.

You say this like they won't get testing every Essendon player between now and then. The average incubation period is 4-6 days. 14 days is the upper limit. If it's been transmitted we will know before game day.

I doubt it because the AFL has a "save the suburban Vic clubs" mentality despite how nonviable and how much it costs them to prop them up. They are not going to suddenly hang them out to dry now.
It is galling that clubs like Hawks, Pies, Eagles and yours are the ones that pay for it. Over the 10 year period of GC and GWS existence, a forced relocation of 2 teams rather than establishing 2 new teams would have saved the AFL a minimum of $150 million in payments to prop the relocated teams up in Melb. Pretty handy to have in these days
The AFL offer to NMFC to move to the Gold Coast was $100 million by the time we said no. Put the same number of another team to move and frankly, not moving has saved the league tens of millions of dollars.

I bet it’s because of outdoor transmission rates. It’s practically zero which is why no one cares about the protests.

They should care about the protests and outdoors. Exertion and yelling is a great way to spread it because the infected person sprays viral load out of their throat into the air. Two people have become infected after attending the protest, the authorities are saying they "have no evidence" it's connected but they don't know it isn't either. Mikakos is saying one of them couldn't have got it there because he wore a mask, but that only reduces your risk and mostly reduces the risk of spreading it. I think you'd be naive to believe none of the cases over recent days aren't connected to the protests, they don't know the source of most of the infections and I doubt protesters are going to say they attended exactly because they don't want to implicate the rally. Not to mention the politicians don't want to suggest it's responsible for spreading covid because they essentially let it go ahead.

Anyway slightly off topic, but playing strenuous sport and yelling slogans is a great way to spread covid.

a carlton fan seeking a cheap 4 points rather then actually earn it.

shocked to be sitting here.

What's a little fudged test result to the AFL with $$m at stake?

Kinda like one autopsy saying George wasn't asphyxiated and another one saying he was...
They both said he was asphyxiated. The asphyxiation caused heart failure. So cause of death - cardiac arrest. Cause of cardiac arrest - pressure on the neck.

The official autopsy is why the charges were upgraded to second degree murder.

Like most conspiracy theories, it's mindless in it's stupidity, so probably a good comparison.

I've not kept up today, is the test still a false positive? Has Dean Wallis' spreadsheet containing who trained near McKenna been found?

photo says it all

Not the thread, but the poles of the political spectrum are prime hunting grounds for $$$ and fools and their money and all that.
It's both sides. it's a shame they aren't closer because they could have their fun together and leave the rest of us alone.

Im a long time Liberal voter who can't stand Shorten (Schadenfreude came to mind during that election) and have all the time in the world for Andrews. He may not be perfect (who is), but he's done a good job by and large in his tenure. And really, it's up to the Vic Libs to knock him off his perch. Clearly the alternative is not desirable to many in this state.

or people could stop getting so angry about nothing.

Correct me if I am wrong but did I hear the deputy health minister say that the Essendon players wont probably catch the virus by tackling because you have to be near someone infected for a longer amount of time to become positive. If this is the case then why do all of these business's have to disinfect? why do balustrades on escalators get wiped down if a second of contact is not considered high risk. This is typical of the AFL putting a fooking spin on this. The government fall for it and McLachlan has to go

DHHS clearly dons supporters.

No. Didn't say that at all. Just suggesting there may be a way to get the test result they want and need.

I'll have to work on my expression, lots of people getting the wrong idea.
I work in pathology.

No, there isn't. Even if it was the AFL organising the testing with a private company, they don't get the result they want.

In the non bizarro ****ed up qanon conspiracy world. A private pathology company being found to have altered the results of a test like this, just destroyed their entire business. For a $100 test.

If he's positive, and the result is fudged to negative, then he plays and infects a bunch of other players, what happens then?

What happens to the AFL? what happens to the pathology company? What happens to the competition?

This is a serious question.

What will the Vic government do, if it finds out the AFL was fudging Covid results on positive players?

I cant imagine Perth's UV index is that different to Melbourne's in winter.
May be warmer, but not necessarily getting more UV.

Population density is likely issue. And i reckon Melburnians are largely the issue in that they aren't taking it seriously enough.
This city has an issue with selfishness.

What about after training inside the change rooms gas bagging, I'm sure DHHS took that into account too.

You think they don't have cameras set up everywhere except for toilets and showers? This is a new installation especially for contact tracing.
