Nah man.
Maybe if he was out of contact and we had a weaker position, sure. Not with having a year left on his deal.

He may choose St Kilda, but we for once actually hold the power with a contracted player. We could get more elsewhere.

If it was like pick 8 to 3 maybe I'd get it, but not 12 to 7. Not in a million years.

Shit trade.

I also thought 14 for Baker was a shit trade. He's only a year younger than Ryan is now.

I love the guy and want to keep him but I too think the club would jump if it meant a third pick in the top 10.

I think it's okay to be reasonable about the state of his body and potential long term prognosis entering his age 30 season.

Ryan has historically relied on his burst, leap and pace to be effective. He's clearly not as fast as he was. He's had two major hamstring injuries requiring surgical repair in the space of 2 years and he hasn't had an actual pre-season since at least 2022? He's being held together by hopes and dreams and if he did himself another injury, we would have egg all over our faces for not turning him into a top 10 pick.

Say he does start to fall off a cliff with his body and gets stuck deeper up forward without his rotations further up the ground. We then have Ryan, Owies, Long, Newton, Champion + any NGA kids all hovering around similar roles when there may be potential to turn this into an extra top 10 mid or similar.

I would like to see him stay, roll the dice that he can stay healthy, get a solid pre-season in and step up as a leader. If they signed Kelly for leadership, Ryan is probably in the same boat particularly with the young Aboriginal boys.

If at this stage in his career St Kilda are offering him longer with more coin, and we're going to get something satisfactory in return like a reasonable pick upgrade, then it's hard not to see a scenario where yeah we should hold the leverage, but everyone is still happy with the outcome.

Still another 4 week wait until Dev gets delisted gaiz... try and keep a lid on it until then plz

We're not trading OA to Brisbane though
Yes we are, agreed contract for WC receiving pick 2 is an agreed trade.
I think we can either extract some of their fringe players for some friendly picks 3rd round or F3rd for not bidding on Annable and depth players with upside like Tunstill or ZZ.

My point isn't we should hold him, my point is a 5 place upgrade is an unsufficient price for a player of his calibre, washed or not. I use Liam Baker last season as an approximate worth, factoring in two years of depreciation, I believe he is worth more than the pick 33 approximate value the trade proposed suggested.

Looking at our list and contracts (and the FS/NGAs we have in train), I don't think it's too bad iff Ryan wants to leave.

What I'd like to do is a combination of 12+19+30+48+Ryan+??? to get 6+7 out of SK and GC.

I'd love to see us go in 1,2,6,7 and done before half the other clubs have even spoken. The main problem here is even less experience on the ground - we'd absolutely need Yeo and Waterman to get injury free, the good TK to turn up most weeks, and whatever best we can get out of Duggan and Cole (and Graham and Baker, but they're performing now).

Think we also have to bite the bullet and give Baker the (C) next year and take that pressure off Duggan, with an intent that he goes for 2-3 years before someone like Ginbey is ready to take it on.

As it stands, we have or are likely to have the following picks to use:

• 1&2- Draft 2 of Sharp, Duursma, Lindsay or Cumming
• Hawthorn R1 - Farrow/Phillipou/Barker
• WCE R2 - Rodriquez/Swadling/Curtin
• Hawthorn R2 - Trade for Davies/Erasmus/Ah Chee
• Hawthorn R3 - Trade for Reidy/Starcevich/McVee
• WCE R5 - Trade for Blight/Robertson
• WCE R6 - F/S Charlie Banfield (Unlikely he attracts a bid earlier than R3 meaning we can match a bid with any pick provided we have the list spot)
• AFL to grant us 2x additional Cat B list spots plus the ability to fill those spots by prelisting our NGA players - Evans and Williams

All up 10 new players requiring 8 list spots to be opened up, with the obvious changes being -

Allen (FA)
Delist:
Jamieson
Rawlinson
Hunt
Petruccelle

Cole, Cripps and Chesser are all reported to have been, or will be, offered new contracts and whilst an extension for Champion hasn’t been mentioned he should also get a new contract

Leaving only Livingstone and Newton in limbo. Newton arguably deserves a contract whilst Livingstone as a Cat B is a unique case and would only be in jeopardy if we want to add Walley as another NGA to the Cat B list

The above still leaves us 3 spots short that needed to be opened up using the following options:

• Delist a contracted player(s) with Barnett the most obvious candidate
• Trade a contracted player(s) - Ryan is a possibility from media reports. Maybe Jack Williams who, rightly or wrongly, seems to be on the outer with McQualter - maybe due to his lack of athleticism
• Combine the Hawthorn R1 and our R2 pick to move up the draft order (the port pick the Suns hold) to take Schubert instead of two picks meaning one less draftee
• Push the AFL for two additional rookie list spots as part of the assistance package

I’d be happy with an end result of-

In (10):
• Sharp
• One of Duursma/Lindsay/Cumming
• Schubert
• Banfield
• Evans
• Williams
• Walley
• Erasmus (or Davies preferably but think he’ll move elsewhere)
• Starcevich
• Blight

Out (6):
• Allen
• Hunt
• Petruccelle
• Jamieson
• Rawlinson
• Barnett or Livingstone

I’d rather keep Ryan but if he asks to leave I’d chase Ah Chee harder or alternatively receive future picks for him and add Robertson as a DFA or token future pick in time
I think you have nailed this very well.

With amount of list spots available and most likely AFL giving us 2 additional rookie spots, which makes it easier to keep Livingstone and get all 4 NGA/FS prospects I can see us taking 3 1st round picks of the bet combination of players you mention.

All other picks can be turned into players that fit our list profile of needing a competent mid who can help with the day to day crash and bash that will alleviate the kids 21 and under from being pushed around and beat up each week.

Davies & Ah Chee would be the first preference, while Ah Chee is more HF/WING he is big enough to be a rotation through the middle if needed, similar to Ryan is.

Reidy or McVee would be a good use of a 3rd round pick and Reidy would be worth a punt to see if he is better than BW, if that plays out trade BW in 2026.

Really only leaves if we want to trade in Blight for a late pick for KPD depth and perhaps being better than Bazzo.

I would also rather keep Ryan, but the offer if real would need to be best 22 player in return as option 1 as we need best 22 players ourselves and Wilson would be the go to trade.

The difference between 12 and 7 is more significant than the difference between 30 and 35, which is why I don't think the points calculator is relevant here. You're talking access to the real pointy end of talent. We're lucky we have a St Kilda (and perhaps Essendon) that are looking to appease an almost rioting fan base with some immediate success. I don't think another club would offer anything inside the top 20 or even 25 for a 29-year-old with injury history.

No surprises - the four mentioned in the headline (Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson and Rawlinson) have all been almost unanimously predicted on here to be delisted

Livingstone’s future said to be uncertain with Cole, Cripps, Chesser and Newton expected to be given extensions

Allen obviously on his way out via FA

Interestingly, the article doesn’t include Champion as an uncontracted player

And it’s official

Thanks for your time at the club Jayden

Low cost FA pick up he gave us what we were hoping for by and large but his time was due

A nice player but was on the list at the wrong time. Would've been pretty useful at a club on the rise.

OOC so would be a 3rd round pick or F3rd.
This is where we break down . For a guy taken in the 40s and has spent 4 years only playing 12 games we should be getting him for free to a good home .

He should want to come to us for the opportunity to play afl .

If we had tunstill this season he would have played every game and been a centre square mid for a lot of bounces .

The West revealing last week out-of-contract midfielder Campbell Chesser’s management were in talks about an extension after finding form late in the year.

Will be interesting to see if this deal gets done

There are arguments to be had - look at 2021. Those 5 picks were huge. 2023 even. Curtin vs Gothard. Big oof.

I'm just not sure with the way the cards would fall this year. Happy to be wrong. There are some handy top 10 names that likely won't slip to 12.
