It seems like all the WA media feel Harley is gone and i guess they would have some small inkling from sauces.
Mate I dont even think Harley himself knows if he's gone or not at this stage.

It will all come down to how the team goes this year (both on and off the field) + what offers get tabled to him. If another club wants to chuck a 7+ year multi-million dollar contract at him and we dont, then good luck to him I say.

Our lack of top picks in concerning given the past three years too many b grade players is how you end up in the stk, ess cycle of middling finishes

Hawthorns first picks since 2019 are Day(13), Grainger Barrass (6), Josh Ward (7) , McKenzie (7), Watson (5).

Day is a gun but was a pick 13, Grainger Barrass a bust, Ward still fringe player and not named for opening round, Mckezie is a role player and Watson has shown a fair bit.

For all the talks about how quick Hawks build has been, it’s not centred around top 5 picks at all.

Yeah agree. I don't like our pick splitting strategy. Should be taking the star mids while your at the bottom and then topping up with half backers, smalls etc as you rise up the ladder with the mid range picks.

Yet the only official word has been we're talking to him about a 2 year and 5 year extension.

Last draft we couldn't have done better , best draft for WC .
We needed depth and we seem to have achieved this .
Yeah we drafted well, with some luck, but we still didn't get a top line mid which is our biggest weakness.

Reid could sign a 5-10 year deal and the media will still talk about him leaving, the reason will change from homesickness to change of heart.

Simply put most in the media are ******** dickheads.

Yet to be seen how they go but having a good reserves setup to develop there fringe players has helped a heap. I can’t think of one player we’ve had develop from below since barrass

Dewar would potentially be one, but I think you’re right. Beagles hasn’t been a good place to develop players. Since post covid.

Depends on how Baker, Allan & Gross go. Owies too I suppose.
If they don't go as well as hoped or expected, then people will be questioning that decision if Draper or Jagga become stars.
I have doubts about Jagga's frame at AFL level. Argument would probably have been stronger if FOS was still available at #3.
Obviously, often quantity does not equal quality.

I think if he was really on the cards, Twomey would've been all over it on Gettable this week.

All he said was WCE have put an offer in and would presume 8 Vic clubs have also.

Didn't say he was 'gone', would stay, etc.

The media don't know shit.

They are listening to the clubs who want him, who look desperate by the sounds of it.

Absolutely this. All Vic clubs, and probably others, would be reaching out to Harley's management so then it becomes Vic clubs are tabling Godfather offers to Harley Reid, which is not far from the truth.

However, I doubt his manager is putting these offers in front of Harley because the game plan is to focus on his footy and get at least two seasons out of the way before they seriously weigh up what to do next.

Essendon in particular are like a kid who has just walked into the lolly shop with their first $5 note and just itching to spend it all on a yummy treat. Unless they can trade out of this year and into next, they'd be desperate to use their draft capital to prise Harley loose this year. Naturally they plant the media stories to put pressure on the kid, hoping the WA footy fish bowl turns the wick up on him.

Other clubs, fearful of missing out, then also reach out to his manager and the media and on and on it goes.

Unfortunately for the WA media, they haven't cottoned on to the fact they have a generational content machine right on their doorstep and that if they don't back off and find a way to create more nuanced HR stories, the kids gonna piss off out of here and theyll have killed the golden goose.

Footy doesn't have that 'if you're not first, you're last' media story mentality. Even if one radio station opted not to run with the endless rhetoric that HR was going to leave this year, the rest will push on with it and try to whip the story to get the clicks. They repeat each other's stories and quote each others interviews to feed their advertising and marketing businesses.

It's a shame theres no reward for proper journalism, analysis and story telling. You either wade into the shallow shit show of click bait stories with the rest of them or your business loses viability.

2023 looks good with Reid x 2 plus Clay Hall, and we're about to find out this year if 2022 was good as Ginbey already looks pretty good and we're about to see Hewett in action. Plus Long and Barnett.

Carlton, Freo, St Kilda, Gold Coast say hello mate. Oh, and I'd say Hawthorn are evidence to the contrary too.

Clubs create success as a collective, its not just draft picks. I'd say good culture, work ethic and high standards have a lot more say in the outcome than just the picks.

Jagga has 12 months free to work on his frame now, upper body at least.

The club will be ok.

If Plan A comes to fruition, we'll be laughing.

H.Reid re-signs, Ch.Warner trades in, B.Starcevic joins as RFA to play the defensive mid/tagger role to free up the aforementioned duo, and K.Briggs comes as RFA in 2026 as the club launches back into genuine contention.

Miss out on those additions and the club still has a heap of picks ready to go to the draft well with.

Should the worst happen and H.Reid wishes to leave, the compensation coming back will be massive - all it would do is delay what could end up actually being a higher ceiling across the whole squad.

Hawks rebuild was not quick at all. They missed finals for 5 seasons (2019-2023) and 6 out of 7 seasons from 2016. What was impressive was how badly they burnt their R1 but how will they did on late picks/rookies/second string trades.

Reid and Warner are a nice duo but I would think they will need a third or a complimentary secondary and the last few years haven’t indicated that we can develop it. Lots of onus on one of Hall, Goss, Allen or Hewett developing well
