EARLY EXTENSION FOR NEW EAGLE

WEST Coast draftee Tom Gross is set to extend his time at the Eagles beyond his first deal with the club.

The 18-year-old isn't out of contract until the end of next year, but the Eagles are adding an extra year to have the Victorian signed through until 2027.

Gross was selected from the Oakleigh Chargers with pick No.46 last November and earned a debut against Greater Western Sydney in round four.

Andrew McQualter has picked him six times across the first 12 rounds of 2025, subbing him in or out of his past four appearances in the AFL.

Gross collected 17 disposals and kicked a goal in his first game, before finishing with 18 touches the following week against Carlton in Gather Round.

West Coast selected five players in the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft – Bo Allan, Jobe Shanahan, Lucca Grego and Hamish Davis were the others – but none have played as much senior football as Gross in 2025. – Josh Gabelich

Looking forward to seeing TG next year. I expect his end of season review, amongst other things, will be a strong ‘get into the gym’ comment.

if he can physically develop like Hough has done, we’ve got a player.

This is what stood out to me:
"Only two top-10 picks from the 2026 crop – Melbourne's No.7 pick Caleb Windsor and Gold Coast's No.9 Ethan Read – have signed on beyond their standard three-year deal so far, with Harley Reid, Colby McKercher, Jed Walter, Zane Duursma, Ryler Sanders, Daniel Curtin and Nate Caddy all still on their initial deals."

With all the pressure on Harley to re-sign and the doomsday predictions because he hasn't yet... where is the pressure on the other guys? Answer: There is none, because it is not an issue that they haven't extended their contracts yet.

In the same way, it should not be an issue that Harley has yet to extend.

I dont want to let Chesser go just yet, I am praying he finds something and that the pick isnt burnt. I also feel sorry for Cole/Hunt - I think typically they would get one more year but with the additions of two pick via MSD + whatever we get for the national draft its like they are both done...

Retire
Gov, Sheed

Delist
Cole, Hunt, Jaimeson, Petch, Livingstone and Rawlison

In 2026 you could make the case that will be Yeo, Owies and Flynn and Cripps (assuming he is given one year extension) last hurrah.

The age profile of the list is getting very young if played out like that....

The next three months are make or break for Chess. If he can get back into the side and play good footy, he'll get a short-term deal. If he can't, or doesn't play well, sadly the club won't re-sign him. There's been plenty of others in his shoes before - Tom Swift was a highly regarded prospect before he did two season-ending injuries.

If Cripps re-signs for one more year then 2026 will definitely be his last year. Yeo's future is dependent on his body. Totally disagree with you with Flynn. He is 28 in September and is easily our best ruck. With Barnett's development stagnating, I can't see any eclipsing him in that role within the short-term.

Yep, good news re Gross.
Midfield all day long.
He'll smash it...& a McKay or perhaps two.;)
Got grunt.
If he doesn't have the tank yet, I'd still start him...then have the sub..or rotate more off the bench.
This young fella seems hungry, contest work is very good.
Don't subscribe to the notion that young midfielders shouldn't be exposed, re injury risk etc
"best learnings"
Great pickup, my favourite of latest draft so far.

Just my personal opinion don’t think Matt Flynn will be our number 1 ruckman next season
There will be merry go round of rucks moving clubs.
Looks like TDK will set in motion.
We have plenty of leavers to pull with draft picks, trading or cash to secure one.

It will depend on a massive amount of what happens with TDK & Draper.
There are 2 scenarios that will play out that will effect WC imo.
Do we see A Reid as a future ruck in 3-4years and need a stop gap for 3 years who can actually compete at a higher level or WC don't see A Reid as a long term ruck and more as a KPD/KPF option.

If ADE get Draper then I would put an offer in front of ROB, UFA and still got 3 years of good service left.

If WC don't see A Reid as a long term project in the ruck, then they put an offer to GC for Moyle and their PA pick this year around pick 4 at the moment that gets him to the club and pick 4.
If the club get ROB Flynn is probably gone, if the club get Moyle Flynn or BW would be gone imo.

I hope this happens but I doubt it.

Our club getting involved in the ruck merry go round seems unlikely, but hey if it happens... ✅

We honestly could not get any worse in this area, so any change is worth making. We have the worst ruck stocks in the AFL, by the length of the Flemington.

ROB most likely to return to Melbourne to conclude, from memory, post grad studies. One of the smarter players out there

That is because NicNat gave him a smart phone

The link - it might be more that superficial

How many players before Cripps would people delist
Not enough. I'd be telling him he is retiring. He still has a season left in him, but the priority is giving all the kids a bit of time so we can see if they will cut it. I still want to have a look at Bazzo, Chesser, Livingstone etc.

How many players before Cripps would people delist

Number 1, get your own material. I've worked for years building this brand and I'm quite attached to it.

Number 2, the only acceptable [though not entirely correct] answer is "every player. I would delist every player before I delisted Jamie Cripps."

Number 3, we all know that it was Jamie who wished on the monkeys paw in 2018. What we don't know is what else he wished for. But we should be cautious when messing around in this space. Given he's already back from a 4 week injury and literally every, up to many dozens now, of small forwards have mysteriously disappeared [presumed dead] having tried to take his spot its just safer to give him what he wants. These are dark dark waters and Noah Long deserves to live dammit.

Fair, if Cameron comes on board where does Flynn play? We also have BBW. Flynn and BBW are interchangeable; neither is winning any hearts and making the position theirs. I can only assume we are still in the market to find a ruckman.

They are both a whisker away from not getting a game when we have a ruckman who can halve the contest. Obviously, these are all hypotheticals and it’s just guesswork on my part.

The monkey paw wishes we know that went through
  • Duggan will get high disposal counts but all will be hack kicks (previously mentioned by another poster)
  • We get a ruckman that is competent at hitouts but his feet can't leave the ground.
  • We get another ruckman that can jump high but is hopeless at hitouts
  • We get pick 1 every year but it's in the MSD

I'm not convinced Cameron will come. He's contracted to Collingwood for 2026 and do we really want to give up a top 35 pick to lure him? I don't think we can afford to.

I disagree that neither are making the position theirs. I think Flynn is making the ruck position his. Bailey has the biggest impact when he's playing a forward-ruck role supporting Flynn. He's just not at the level where he can be a lead ruckman at the club.

I think Cameron was the chase at the right price.
That seems to be too high now.
Flynn and BW are in the ok category, not really top tier and will never be, but they are what we have.
I still have the opinion that WC will continue to seek out better rucks if they can at the right price.

WC have a decision too make this year or next with their rucks.
Do they keep Flynn and BW ticking along and keep developing A Reid who looks more than capable of being a mobile number 1 ruck in 3-4 years and keep Livingstone developing to replace Flynn or BW when their time is up.
Or do they go hard at Moyle from GC who is almost ready to take a number 1 ruck role in the next 18mths?
