They didn’t though.

A bunch of senior players all asked to leave at the same time, and they fought incredibly hard to keep all of them.

They extracted maximum value, no disagreement there, but this concept that Richmond saw the cliff and moved their stars on is simply untrue. They tried to retain every player they lost last offseason.

Did well to pivot into getting value mode, that’s for sure.

I thought Chesser and Maric were ok yesterday - both pretty much locked in those roles for the game.
Thought they where both good & it was one of Marics best games at the club. He went in hard when he needed, laid a couple of really good tackles, gave us some run & used the ball well. Seems like after shaky start to the year he's making some progress

Shame Maric got the corky that limited his run in the last quarter or so.

Im sorry but the players who have played so far look bang average for Richmond. Shanahan is leaps and bounds above any of the KPPs they took so far. Trainor looks a bit mid sized. Smillie looks a big worry fitness wise as does Lalor to the point im concerned about his long term future in the game. 4 hamstring injuries in 10 months is insane

I think they fluffed it a bit. What was the point in racking up pick 10 and 12 for Shai Bolton only for pick 30 to be a better player then what you chose? It feels to me they just dumped Shai Bolton for a bunch of middling picks as opposed to top ones

Interesting, didnt realise he was rated that highly by the Eagles.. Thought might be a decent option with the Jack Silvagni compo, likely to be end of 2nd round. Would rather try our hand at the draft.
His value is actually at about his lowest point, which is why fans would be reluctant to trade him. If the Eagles did want to offload him, we'd be lucky to get a third, maybe even a swap of picks or exchange of fringe players. But there's still hope there that he could be something, so for just salary cap and list space, it feels like most fans would rather keep him than sell him for next to nothing in a weak draft.

End of second would be a good deal on paper for the Eagles

Couldn’t find anything on Rioli, truthfully I forgot he existed. Too good of a deal to turn down given Suns hand out picks like candy.

Upping the offers on the OoC as late as September seems like trying to keep them to me.

People forget that maric is only 20 and chesser 22

He don't have a great development program with that shit show wafl side .

Maric had a late start missing his draft year and chesser has had 1.5 seasons ruined by injury.

Both have talent and very good kicking skills a trait our team sorely lacks .

they are the type that once they hit 100 games you will forget there was a time they looked like not making it

Would you also say we fluffed the bo Allan selection ?

How about trading away pick 3 for owies Baker and Allan ?

We certainly have been spoilt for ruck riches.

Last time I was hoping to break even was back in the days of David O'Connell and Peter Higgins. That was a long time ago.
You don’t need to go that far back. Was it possibly when Lycett went up against Grundy in the 2018 grand final?
Nic Nat missed plenty of football over his career and we were still a decent side.

hahaha all of a sudden we have dodged a bullet with that crab Cameron. Can always rely on this board for the humour it provides. He signs and we have the man we wanted. He doesn't sign and he is a crap player and we dodged a bullet.
It's just gold!!
I was never big on getting him and felt it would be a waste of a first round pick. Supporters are usually going to try and see the bright side of most decisions it’s why we are supporters…..

I am celebrating and I will bitch moan and complain all I like :) in particular since Cameron will make zero difference to our ladder position although one could argue a better ruckman could have helped us beat Essendon and Richmond.

But we still would have finished last.

North have a world class ruckman, look where they are.
Maybe Xerri wants a move to a club that has some actual promise? 🤣

They're pretty lousy counter offers.

I daresay we caught wind of the compensation for Jack Graham and decided we'd prefer to keep him rather than get "compensated" a pick in the 40s for a two time premiership player who is firmly entrenched into our best 22. Having said that, it doesn't sound like we fought tooth and nail to retain him as a player. More that we offered marginally more to see what eventuated then rolled over.

Baker, also out of contract, was at risk of going for an unsatisfactory amount at the trade table, so maybe we felt it was in our best interest to retain him rather than lose him for peanuts. Thankfully, you guys came to the party.

The Bolton talk feels like posturing more than anything else. Playing "hardball" is pretty common when trying to extract maximum value at the trade table. If we wanted him, we would've kept him. Contracted until 2028.

Nothing was said about Rioli and we'd be pretty foolish to not let him go given what Gold Coast were offering. Again, if we wanted him, we would've kept him. Contracted until 2027.

Blair's comments in 2023 about the strength of the 2024 draft also tells me he wouldn't oppose cashing in on the want-away players and capitalising on a draft that he clearly rated. I could be wrong though.

Yes mate, it was all part of the master plan for the Tigers.

Bravo Richmond, they played the Eagles with their phony attempts to keep Baker and Graham and bossed trade period by discarding 25 year old Shai Bolton and reigning club champion Dan Rioli, despite them being signed to long term contracts.

Master-strokes all round. Lots of stroking.

Chessers trade value depends on the situation.

Adding 3rd rounders doesn't really do anything for us this year anyway so 100% it's just better off keeping him in that case.

If bundling him with some other pick swap unlocks us being able to trade the Hawks pick back down the draft order so we can take Lindsay/Cumming/Schubert, then I'm all for it.

Just an example.

You guys had all the power with Bolton and Rioli contracted required players. Youse would of kept them if the value wasn't met.

You guys definitely tried hard to keep Baker im guessing due to high character and leadership reasons. Blair played a blinder extracting the value he did for bakes especially given he was OOC and set on returning home. Graham is probably the only slight fumble dare say the compensation pick was lower than expected but been UFA didn't leave much choice if UFA decide to leave
