Just need to call their bluff and hold.
Clarke was ok in the interviews, happy he mentioned bidding on academy players but I still wish he was a bit stronger on the Starcevich deal. Much better than last year, hopefully he’s learning.

I hope we offered hawks r2 first. We need to have somewhere to negotiate too. If we offered our second straight up it doesn’t leave us much room to haggle.

In this situation you have to think of the club not how we/you are viewed publicly by fans or by rival clubs.

The question should be are we better off with pick 2 and Starcevich or pick 16, Allen and Starcevich.

That should be the situation on the white board that is being war gamed out.

We aren't looking for respect we are looking for results.

Another telling thing that Clarke said is "we haven't speculated on what we would do with pick 2 since we don't have it yet." Either he's telling porkie pies or that should be concerning for us.
Everyone needs to be calm, and the club needs to hold their nerve here, because there's no way that Brisbane don't make sure OA gets band 1 compensation. They know we'll match and they won't get him if it's not band 1, and he fills the biggest hole in their list while they're favourites for another flag.

But apart from that, Oscar getting band 1 is the only thing keeping us from just taking Starcevich as a FA. If they decide to play silly buggers and put in an offer that doesn't get band 1, we'll match it and they'll not get the player they need, and they lose Starcevich for nothing. This is a way bigger calamity for Brisbane than us keeping Oscar and missing out on pick 2.

Once they've lodged the paperwork for OA I think we should just play hardball with the Starcevich trade and wait them out, I wouldn't be surprised if they need the cap space and will be in a bit of trouble if we don't take him anyway. They might blink if it's the final minutes and we've still just got Hawk's R2 on the table.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the only player of any note that is keen to join us this year also happens to play for the team that is poaching our FA former skipper, turning what should be a straight forward process into a drawn out Mexican stand off.

If that's not typical 2020s WCE, I don't know what is it.

Nothing comes easy.

They have Gallop and Morris who they won a premiership with not to mention Hipwood will come back later in the year. Just describing the situation doesn't mean I'm not calm.

At what point does Andrew McDougall, Allen’s manager, start putting out feelers to the likes of Sydney or Hawthorn to see if they’re interested in a 26 year old KPF?

Can’t imagine they’d be overly thrilled with Brisbane delaying lodgement of the paperwork much longer

Is there any chance he ends up re-signing with us?

In Clarke's interview he said "if we don't like the compensation we can match and then trade" so he doesn't seem to think so.

Soon, and I think we can also add Collingwood to that list, even the Suns.

Demons, Saints and Essendon may also be keen but Oscar may not be.

I’m wondering whether Sydney would want a FA KPF rather than chasing Curnow with a low chance of success. They must have cap space if they want Charlie. Dean Cox to meet with Oscar on Wednesday. Enough time to get due diligence and paperwork lodged by Friday.

We then still get pick 2.

We put an offer into Starcevich that Lions would have great difficulty matching but could still do it. Explain to Starcevich if he stays put then fine, but he can still join us by nominating the PSD since his club got greedy.

If we miss out on Starcevich, is there a player like Lloyd that we slightly overpay for to thank them (Lloyd as a lock down defender who is older but no concussion concerns). Use pick 38!

So Lions miss out on KPF they have been wanting for 12 months but save $$
They miss out on pick 23
They have a higher than planned and longer than planned contract in an area they are deep
Annables bid comes at 1
Lions dirty the waters for future FA wanting to commit to Brisbane

I am sure it will get sorted. I expect Starcevich and Dev to be Eagles while Oscar become a Lion. These things normally do but geez it would be great viewing if it’s gloves off.

Meanwhile, Massey flies to QLD to interview Annables at his home. Then Duane drives down to Carrara for a couple of home visits with Uwland and Patterson while in state.

I really think some of you would be better served supporting one of those Saudi teams that just buy a trophy every year. There’s 18 clubs trying to do what’s best for them, it’s day one of an incredible tedious period, farken relax campaigners.

“Oh but Clarke is a really weak negotia…”

Great. Will melting about it for weeks (following the months of pre melts) make you feel any better if he does shit the bed? No? So save yourself the time and just have a breather.

Nobody is on the other side of this Pick 16 issue, we don’t need 1000 posts a day about how it would be a bad deal or how he only said it was off the table but he didn’t do it while flipping off the Brisbane manager and firing a machine gun in the air so therefore he’s gonna cave. heck me. Harden up.

See you tomorrow.

We need to make a statement and change the narrative this year. This will pay dividends in the future, not jeopardise us and we are in a perfect decision to do that with leverage on our trade and draft position. Its bigger than the results in isolation. I'm very firm on this. Line in the sand time.

Even clearer than earlier, to essentially the same trade questions (no surprise. But additional contracts questions which were also good).

16 seems no chance to go to Brisbane, and pony up for band 1 or we match.
There's a bit too much "16 isn't available for Starc, at this point" for my liking. Everything else good though, & many times better than last year. But I'll be nervous about pick 16 until Starc deal is done

Interestingly he also notes that any trade for GC's pick 6 is likely to be done on draft night.

Wow, only just got to listen to the Brisbane manager here. Very arrogant stuff.

For those who are unaware, when exchanging players or picks, you can only involve players or picks - so for example, having "we won't bid on your academy players" is not allowed. I've referenced this before as the reason why any pick swap with gc HAS to involve us giving them more points, otherwise it's way too obvious what's going on.

By saying that the Allen stuff is tied up with Starcevich, the Brisbane manager is getting dangerously close to admitting to breaking these rules. There's arguably a defense that he could make by saying something along the lines of "we have to get Starc's salary off the books before we can make the offer to Allen" but it's fishy as ****. I guess they've gotten pretty cocky knowing that Swann will be the guy deciding if they've broken the rules or not.
Good post :thumbsu:

You'd think the fact there's:
1. A 822 points difference between matching pick 1 where we could bid on Annable and pick 3 where the earliest bid can come if we pass on him;and
2. A 238 point diffeence between pick 16 which they're chasing for Starcevich and pick 22 which we're said to have offered

would be enough alone to make Brisbane want to play nice with us.

I’ve always viewed both him and Starc as those good role players you need to win a flag but you take them away from a winning environment and they are quite average or decent.

Starc is ok but actually don’t rate Ah chee at all and he is a slightly better version of his brother
Bit harsh on C.Ah Chee I reckon, I think he's a fair bit better than his brother
Since being moved forward for Lions the last two seasons he's been pretty consistent, & kicked 4 in GF last year

When Colin Young tells him to I'd imagine.

I feel physically sick reading the latest interview with Clarke.

The way he is talking about Starcevich and Young is the exact approach the he took with Baker- foam about what wonderful players they are and how great they will be for our culture, talk like it is a certainty before the deal was thrashed out and then get reamed on the trade table as a result.

I'm genuinely petrified how bad these deals are going to be. In a year where we could literally trade noone, go to the draft and set up our future with the best two players in the draft and another two first round picks you just know there is going to be absolute carnage by the end of trade week.

Sure, but also...

If we get to the end of the free-agency period and Brisbane don't lodge, then there'll be a trade. We're apparently offering nearly the same deal money wise for Starcevich as they are for Allen, so let's say it's a straight swap (it won't be, but just for sake of brevity).

Brisbane still get Allen, they now don't get pick 16
Eagles still get Starcevich, keep 16, but now we don't get pick 2

The consequences are far greater for us than they are for them, and they're betting that they can force us to hand over a better pick because of it.

Of course in theory with 10 minutes to go on Friday or whenever the deadline is, they should just push it through because for them pick 22 or whatever it ends up as is still better than nothing , the problem for them is once they do that they've lost their leverage, so it really just depends how close to the line they're willing to sail (and how pissed off Allen's management become along the way)

Clarke didn't complete the Tim Kelly trade, which is where all of this saltiness stems from. He's had 1 trade and draft period to turn this around and done well so far, except for taking on Owies. The volcanic eruption over sliding down 9 picks to get Baker AND Graham (who came because of Liam for nothing) and pick Bo who we wanted anyway proved to be a good move by Clarke. We support Mini with 2 great culture guys who work hard and demonstrate the effort he wants, and we've now got more players keen to move here as well.

Can you delist then re-rookie a guy who is still under contract? As opposed to someone out of contract
Could be an option for Barnett if required. Surely nobody else would take him.

Yes.

An added bonus is that the value of a rookie contract, from his contract, is counted outside the salary cap.

Genuine lulz at the bedwetting going on from some posters in this thread.

Must be expensive washing those bed sheets every day.
