That doesn't work for us though.

We can only take as many picks to the draft as we have available list spots.

We can't take 8 or 9 third and fourth rounders in. At best we might have room for 1 third rounder, and we have Ports already. And not to many other teams will be looking for picks this draft (maybe Essendon, but they will be hoping to use their first two picks before bids come for their father son twins).
My understanding is that we have ports 2nd rounder. The trade I set out would leave us with pick 2, our second rounder, ports second rounder and Brisbane’s fourth. That’s only four picks, and brisbanes fourth is a take it or leave it depending on what quality is left.

I’m a Brisbane supporter, talking about the proposed trade from a Brisbane perspective.

We’ll be looking for mid to late second round picks.

Out of interest, if you were West Coast’s recruiting manager, how would you play our draft hand? Trades and drafts. I’m interested to hear an independent view.

Its a conundrum isnt it.
Some on here saying that traditionally we dont bottom out for long and can build a good list very quickly while others are saying they have no faith in our club to draft the best players available in positions of need.

It just means that done right it wont take 5 years.

If we stuff it up it will.

A bit of an obvious statement I know but thats the crux of it.

That’s the thing though, it is the equivalent of a mid second rounder. You need points, how they all add up doesn’t matter as long as they do add up.

There’s no restrictions on the number of picks you can take in.

Yes there is. You can only take the same number of picks to the draft as you have available list spots.

Elijah Wood already our shortest player

Godfather32 could you step up with some LOTR based boardisms please?

I would chip in with something but I'm not a nerd, and the board's most repetitive poindexter (Dark Sharks) refuses to return (of the king).

How many list spots will open up?

Say McStay and Robertson move, Berry as well.

Then you have the dead wood. Say 6 spots, two FS in and they cost close to 3000 points after the discount.

From the Herald Sun.

Richmond has upped its offer to Liam Baker as it tries to ward off a home-town assault from West Coast.

The Tigers are believed to have offered Baker around $600,000 over two years, which would reward his brilliant form as the Tigers’ jack-of-all-trades.
Richmond is attempting to reconfigure its midfield and while it has interest in both GWS midfielders Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto, the Tigers are believed to favour Hopper.

Hopper has battled all year with a knee injury that required multiple surgeries but has a touch of class to go with his strong inside clearance game.
But there is no point the Tigers securing Hopper and losing Baker, who can easily play as a centre square midfielder as well as forward and back
Baker is considering whether to return to West Australia to be closer to family but is yet to make a decision on his future.
Richmond has its own first-rounder and North Melbourne’s second-rounder so is well stocked if it can retain Baker and offer early picks for Hopper.

It’s pointless speculating on trades as I have no idea what your club wants to do, or if any clubs want any of your players you are happy to let go.

At your first pick I’d be looking at best mid available, one of Wardlaw, Hewitt or Phillipou.

I’d bid on Ashcroft if he is there.

If possible, best available KPF at your second pick.

Your third pick might simply be best available player on board. Possibly one of the rucks.

I wouldn’t be against moving a pick in to next year, if the opportunity arose. There might be an opportunity to trade for GC’s first round pick next year, if their academy kid is rated higher than where their first pick falls. (GC’s academy is loaded with talent for 2023 and 2024).

This is what i would like to see heading into 2023. Originally i had 9 out with Hurn and Dixon also being delisted but i wasn't sure if that would be possible, so i have those two staying. Players like Langdon, Foley and Dixon are fortunate to get another year, while it does seem we're slowly getting to a point where midfielders are at a surplus particularly with our first rounder also most likely being a midfielder. This could potentially mean a surprise delisting like Clark, Winder or O'Neill.

Overall i think an off season like this would put the team into pretty good shape heading into next season, hopefully we get to see a rejuvenated a side with lots of young talent running through it next year.

Delist: Strnadica, Naish, Trew, Joyce

Retire: Kennedy

Traded/FA: Gaff, Nelson

In: Baker

Draft

2 Phillipou - bottom ager, bid bodied mid, classy disposal, kicks goals, most upside.

20 Traded for L.Baker - Premiership player, tough as nails, good kick and decision maker, knows how to find the footy

26 Barnett - don't know much about him, but seems like a good project ruckman with lots of upside

3rd rounder Darcy Jones - silky skills, quick, high risk high reward pick.

Late/Rookie J.Baker - liked what iv'e seen from him could develop him into a decent back pocket.

Two more spots left to fill, i'll leave those for the experts.. to sort out.

You mention ‘J Baker’ twice (I assume you mean Liam Baker).

Apparently this guy is J Baker from the Mayo Clinic. He’s even got a PhD. I look forward to him leading our midfield into the future.

Just posted this on the changes thread before realising it was probably more suitable here;

OK gang, opinions...

Josh Ruckham tears it up on Sunday or at least performs decently for a second ruck option...does this change our draft strategy at all (with ruck stocks being covered), or does his career remain on thin ice?

He's without a permanent role anywhere at the moment, potentially playing for his career in these last few games. Could he reinvent himself as a smaller, mobile ruck?

For me personally, I can't make out whether this is purely a stop gap solution or if the club are looking at this as a new position for him [emoji848]

Mitch Robinson will retire (not be offered a new contract).

Ely Smith will be delisted.

Tom Berry likely delisted.

Connor McFadyen likely delisted.

Mitchell Cox (R) will be delisted, allowing us to move a player to the rookie list. Say Ryan Lester.

Uosis (cat b rookie will be delisted)(Darryl White jr will be signed as a cat b rookie)

So that’s 5 senior spots available.

We draft Ashcroft and Fletcher. If there’s a decent/project KPP at our third pick, draft that player. Or maybe we look at our academy kid Shadeau Brain.

We pass on our last two picks.

We could redraft Berry and Cox/MacFadyen in the PSD to one year contracts. Or redraft one player in the PSD, and keep one spot open for the SSP.

We don’t need to be loading up on speculative late draftees.

Take 3 players this year and redraft a couple of delisted players for depth on one year contracts.

Delist or retire 3 players next year and go to the draft with minimal picks.

2024 we’ll probably need a few list spots for Levi Ashcroft and we might have a couple (2-4) KPP prospects in our academy.
