I think the issue with Grey is that we’ve seen what he’s capable of at AFL level and as a player that’s been around AFL clubs for several years now there isn’t much scope for improvement. He’d be handy at a developing club that needs a mature body to ease the load on the younger players but it’s hard to mount an argument that he could fill a spot in a side that’s challenging

Reid has shown a bit in his first year in the WAFL after moving up from ammos and at 21 there’s a possibility there’s further improvement that can be gained in an AFL environment. Doesn’t mean he will improve or that there weren’t better options we might have looked at instead (including keeping a spot vacant for the mid season draft)

I can see why we chose Reid over Grey but feel we might have been better waiting until the mid season draft to pull the trigger. That said, good luck to him and Jamaine as they try to fashion an AFL career.

I'm willing to cop crap for it if he comes good but I really don't like the Reid selection. I have no doubt there would be better prospects out there had we gone looking. I have little faith in O'Brien and his cronies for the most part.

He lacks finishing polish at WAFL level, that won't improve with the pressure and pace that comes at the higher level.

The club probably thinks will have another spot available due to rioli. So may as well use the 2 spots up now and then use the rioli spot at the mid season draft.

Am happy with the inclusion of Reid.
1. Shows prospective players that there is a pathway to the AFL through the Beagles team
2. Reward for effort
3. Played some games in the WAFL last season that could have earned him an inclusion to the WC AFL team if he had been eligible
4. We most probably have not seen his best and having done a AFL pre season for the first time we might just see that soon
5. At 24 he has the body and side to be a plug and play when needed
6. There is no doubt that he knows where the goals are
7. He comes over as Hard nut in the Jamie Cripps mould.
8. And finally it’s a great story

He joined our side without that promised spot, so these level players will join regardless.

Is that all it takes?

Last season, with Rioli et al running around, he wouldn't have come close to a game.
4. We most probably have not seen his best and having done a AFL pre season for the first time we might just see that soon
Let's hope his best is still to come.
5. At 24 he has the body and side to be a plug and play when needed
Raid the Olympics squad next.
6. There is no doubt that he knows where the goals are
He knows where the behinds are for sure.
7. He comes over as Hard nut in the Jamie Cripps mould.
One thing doing it at a lower level.
8. And finally it’s a great story
Australian Idol FC?

I should log off as I'm feeling a bit too negative tonight. It feels like we've gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in the small forward department. I feel there was better out there, at the end of the day. Guess we'll see. :)

I agree, he's very much a WAFL level player at his best. Won't be able to compete at AFL level, will be too slow and he's not young so there's little upside. Waste of a spot.
A poor mans Ashton Hams

And yes i actually wanted Gorter but I've learnt from my mistakes.

I don’t think you’re being negative, CC- they are legitimate concerns, especially of a 24-25 year old recruit.

Right now, He’s got the perfect mould in Cripps to base his game off. Let’s see what an AFL environment can do for his tank, then conversely his finishing skills. It’s now or never for him. He knows it, we know it. We’ve seen his work ethic at the Beagles, so it’s not like we haven’t had the chance to see him close up when it comes to his preparation and dedication to his dream
To play AFL. He sits behind a few right now, so his work really starts now.

As I see it, we’ve recruited 2 different small forwards. Jones is the defensively minded forward with the capability to finish, and Reid is a creative forward. So for mine, although we’ve drafted 2 forwards we’ve drafted for role cover rather than just picking guys just because we can.

I see Jones playing early, especially if Cameron isn’t fit. I think we need to emphasise locking the ball in our front half and he suits that well. It will he interesting to see if either are named to play this week.

Cripps is an elite forward (according to Champion data) and one of his assets for a long time has been his endurance. Reid has a ton of catching up to do and endurance isn't something a player improves a preseason or two.

Would actually love to see XON spend a bit of time up forward for the BEAGLES this year.

He’s probably our only decent young midfielder. Has to spend basically the whole season in the guts for me.

Cripps is elite- his work rate for a small to medium forward is terrific and his ability to hit the scoreboard as well makes him such a difficult match up. He’s not so much now but he was underrated for such a long time.

I wasn’t suggesting he would be able to catch up to Cripps, that would be setting him up to fail. But Cripps is the kind of player he should be standing next to at every session trying to emulate. He’s in an AFL environment now, there’s no reason to suggest he won’t be able to improve in that area. Only need to look at Ryan and his improvement to see what can happen if it all clicks.

Remember that Reid and Jones are the 810th and 811th listed players in the competition. So as mature bodies they along with Petrol and Treacy are competing for one position in the first part of the season. Once Willi is suspended we can top up another small forward from anywhere in Australia.
It gives us an opportunity to see what 18+ year old emerges in the first half of the season and swoop on them before the 2020 draft.
