If we cant nail the rookie draft and get another Mcgovern , Dean Cox we are just poor at drafting .

Would love to move into top 20 of draft with a strong chance of 1-2 good prospects still being there.
O'Driscoll, Carroll, Powell, Poulter, Trew

Two WA boys O'Driscoll and Carroll I'd be super keen on

Do you rate the Smokey from Subi Lachlan Vanirsen ??

So the Hickey trade article in the West today.

Could be white noise but I like the heading. Swans pushing to convince the Eagles to trade.

I really hope we take advantage of this ruck supply v demand situation. Swans pick 22 is what we want, that can be turned into a very solid mid for the next 10 years.

Continue drafting the best available ruck / ruck forwards around late 2nd early 3rd rounds, develop them and trade them later to upgrade future picks. We seem to be pretty decent at it.

Isaac Smith joining the retirement village in Geelong

Jordon Clark dislikes this............. ;)

Higgins too!

Liam Ryan has a lot of Roy George about him
In the spirit of anus, I’m shotgunning ‘Boy’ as his nickname should we draft him and he doesn’t live up to expectations

Smith is a win for Geelong. I don’t think I’ve seen a team pull in so many high profile senior players in the hope of a flag before.

People have been saying the cliff is coming for years though and they seem to stick around. The draft pick haul we gave them for Kelly will help them a lot

I’ve spent the last day trying to work out how to shoehorn a Boy George reference into a post and you go with this?
That’s your issue Squashy. You can’t overthink these things, just post the first terrible gag that comes to mind and watch that post-like ratio explode.

Don’t worry about the fact most people will put you on ignore.

Was told many months ago Eagles want to keep him because he was on frontloaded contract which is bugger all at the moment and club see him as a great mentor to Bailey Williams, Oscar Allen and co.

Some good stories around of him coming in after training for the sole purpose of working with both of them (because you cant practice rucking by yourself). One of the better clubmen etc. He has truly been the ultimate professional so far and deserves respect if he comes back to play against us

If he wants to go id imagine Sydney give up more then you think they would just because of his good contract

I love the way they manage their list, always contending.

Not going to stop me pulling the piss if there's half a chance too though

Very impressive. Been tracking him for a while now as a long term option for the replacement of Jetta that is likely to be available for our selections.

What has surprised me is how well he has adapted to playing midfield this year - his hands remain glue at ground level and he reads play so well.

Massive upside about him, but he is still very raw and his fitness levels need to improve dramatically.

Still would be happy to pick him up as a rookie spot.

We should give up the idea of having recruiting zones and just have a Liam Ryan family zone.

Good see Pickett get a handy 2 yr $1 mil contract from the Tigers ..After doing it tough on the Rookie contract this year ..

Pro sports can be brutal, particularly if we keep going down the US model but hopefully there was a bit of thought given to rewarding him for past effort.
Great story and really happy for the guy.
Also really happy when the Tigers have to pay market value for someone.

WA boy so all good if everyonee happy.

We draft a highly rated Vic 18 yr old tall with a pick in the 3rd round and in two years he may be helping with a trade for Jackson from Melbourne. He may also love Perth and we keep him, happy days.

We are pretty good at identifying and developing talls. Lets use that advantage at the trade table with non WA gun u18 talls.

Have heard very good things about Hickey. Off field and with development etc. So yes I do respect what he adds to the club and we are in a win win situation IMO.

If Hickey moved to the Swans it would be on new terms and more money. I did not know about his front loaded contract which is interesting. That suggests if he moved he would be financially much better off. At his age and in these times what would you do?

"Manage" is a nice way of saying salary cap rorting

I'm not sure it is quite rorting - what they are doing is technically within the rules.

It's just at the only team based outside of a major city (albeit an hour from Melbourne, but still a much smaller city than the GC which is the next smallest) the lifestyle vs income equation becomes pretty good for players.

The fact that $1m will get you a whole lot more house in Geelong or on the surf coast compared to Melbourne/Sydney/Perth/Brisbane/GC (Adelaide may be more comparable), plus as a relatively captive market they can offer opportunities post-football (and the players still have access to the lucrative Melbourne market for media, promo opportunities) - makes it quite a desirable offer for players.

it's part of why the salary cap is broken (as the value for money is different in different areas) - the other major thing is the 95% floor, which just makes stronger clubs even stronger. North will be paying 95% of their salary cap next year. Think about that - after losing B Brown and Higgins, and delisting 11(?) players... I'd prefer the minnow clubs are allowed to bank maybe 20-30% and pay the salary cap max over a 10-year period.
