It seems crazy to me though- they invest SO MUCH into getting him and now they're trying to get rid of him.

He had some mental health challenges and invited a girl to his hotel during quarantine. Is that really a reason to boot him out of the club? He was impressive in his last games this season I thought.

I would've thought given everything they paid, and the fact he's only 25 would warrant a level of persistence.

New management with new ideas. Peter Bell didnt trade him in. Lyon and co did. Bell well and truly implemented a no dickheads policy and will do anything to set the standard

I just dont think anyone though is willing to take Hogan on myself

The coach has made his decision and yep he is gone.

Its Longmuire stamping his authority straight up. Setting the bar higher and shipping out a high profile player for good reason.

Bloody Freo may be getting their sh!t together  .

Peter Bell is the reason , he’s been very impressive..

I'm not sure it is quite rorting - what they are doing is technically within the rules.

It's just at the only team based outside of a major city (albeit an hour from Melbourne, but still a much smaller city than the GC which is the next smallest) the lifestyle vs income equation becomes pretty good for players.

The fact that $1m will get you a whole lot more house in Geelong or on the surf coast compared to Melbourne/Sydney/Perth/Brisbane/GC (Adelaide may be more comparable), plus as a relatively captive market they can offer opportunities post-football (and the players still have access to the lucrative Melbourne market for media, promo opportunities) - makes it quite a desirable offer for players.

it's part of why the salary cap is broken (as the value for money is different in different areas) - the other major thing is the 95% floor, which just makes stronger clubs even stronger. North will be paying 95% of their salary cap next year. Think about that - after losing B Brown and Higgins, and delisting 11(?) players... I'd prefer the minnow clubs are allowed to bank maybe 20-30% and pay the salary cap max over a 10-year period.
A team like norf could go a long way to rebuilding on the cheap pick wise by taking players other clubs as salary cap dumps so they can pay the 95% floor .

Just off the top of my head from gold coast
Peter Wright , will brodie and brayden fiorini could all probably be taken with a single future 2nd rounder or cheaper so GC could get Treloar.

Phillips and will hoskin-elliot from Collingwood could be had with a late pick just to get his salary off the pies books .

That's 5 decent players for not much in the way of draft capital.

Have money in the bank to target free agents down the track .

Or norf could just fold the club

Is that next years draft ?? Or the next few years ??

Bit hard to read your post ..

Hogan was Bell's idea... he's the one that flew over the melbourne and broke his back to get the deal done though...

I remember at the time everyone was labelling Belly a 'hero' because he brought over a half-cooked, broken footed party animal.

Freo said they cant afford his salary meaning neither could we. He is on a new contract and not his rookie one
Cannot believe the club couldn't afford someone who is on about $400 000.
That's just about an average salary.

JK and Bunger would've taken haircuts on their new extensions.
Bunga especially seeing as his last contract was when he was captain so
he would've been on big coin.
Schoey retired as well.

$400 000 to $450 000 isn't a lot to find.

Bell absolutely traded him in.

Say he is asking for 400-500k i think we could easily fit him in.

As i said we will have a lot of cash free next year so at first he doesn't earn as much in his first year.

Then you have Hutchings & Jetta who in total could easily be 500k a year so there are two players you could sacrifice is need be.

IF there is talk of us trying for Cripps next year then we a 100% have money lying around.

WC are very good at the way they handle their salary cap.
This.

I'd be surprised if Jetta and Hutch were only on $500 000 between them as well.
More like $700 000 I'd reckon.
Schoey gone as well.

If we couldn't afford someone on around $400 000, we're in big trouble.

Isaac Smith joining the retirement village in Geelong
Geez Geelong are bargaining on their future for a premiership

Good call forgot Schofield.

I seriously hope we are selling how much better it would be be play at WC than Geelong. He really wants to play wing so lets give him that spot.

A midfield of:

Clark Kelly Gaff

Ruck: Nic Nat , Shuey, Yeo

Bench: Sheed, Redden ( Tagger run with role)

Awesome amount of pace , grunt and accumulation. We would have a proper winger to compliment Gaff.

Everyone has this weird belief that if i get a 3 year 1.2 mill contract I earn 400,000 a year

Not that simple in AFL. Alot of the time it will be 500k,500k,200k for example meaning 2020 could easily have Jetta on 200k in a frontended deal for example which it pretty much certainly was (not 100% sure but confidentish).

We pay 100% of our cap 100% of the time and plan it ahead of time you will find.

We wouldnt have accounted for Clark having a batshit insane wage at Geelong, just like Fremantle didnt

Bell was the one to snare Hogan .. Longmuir thought they could fix and turn Jesse around ..haha

$500 000 is still not hard to find.

What amount do you think Clarke is on?

Does anyone actually know what Clark is earning at Geelong?

It seems he is on 400k+ a year. Would mean if Brander goes we need to find 250kish to get him in and under the cap. I cant imagine it would be possible without signing up Clark to a huge long term contract and asking for him to take much less this year. Would be possible I spose but pretty much as unlikely as you are going to get

You arnt moving your list plans around for a guy like Jordan Clark

What I find interesting is if Clark is on such high money, then how do Geelong still have the space to add in J.Cameron, S.Higgins and I.Smith in the same year?

Either there are some players that are being seriously underpaid or something very fishy is going on with the Cats.

he feels we have poor attitude and will be sh*t next year.
Wow!? A team that won a GF 2 yrs ago and been in finals most recent years, a team that can beat any top team on a good day? How do you calculate 'poor attitude' - from a covid season?
So much factors into a winning team, but I just can't help believing that it's a whole lot easier to maintain a winning culture or a 'good attitude' or a trifecta or a dynasty when you play up to 16 home games and some of your away games are in the same city or state. Or you just fly up the coast to Qld in the same timezone. (Yep it's a tedious old chestnut)

There is no way Clark is on massive coin. Kelly at the time was on a tiny contract there and he was elite in his two year there.
Clark also signed an extension to stay at the cats (which would be on increased money), Kelly did not. Clark also would have been on more than Kelly as Clark was taken in the first round of the draft and Kelly in the second.

Under is the key word! Underhanded...under the table? Certainly been done before (Hawks?)

You said he was on a "batshit insane wage".
$450 000 is not insane IMO.

I think most reckon he would've been on around $400 000.
Schoey and Nelson would cover that easily.

List plans are always moved around.

You're making this sound like it's a lot harder than it has to be.
Offer him 3 years at $450 000.
