This isn’t fully correct. That $136B includes intangible costs such as loss of life, pain and suffering and premature mortality. In realised costs it’s more like $19B. Also since 2016 smoking has decreased from 12.8% in adults to 11.6% in 2019 so the actual impact is decreasing year on year too. Also in 2020 FY tobacco tax contributed $17.4B

The tax raised is pretty much on par with attributable impact costs, of course not all the money goes where it should & is passed on to the tax payer with ridiculous information by way of 'intangible costs'.

Dan’s #1 fanboi due shortly to blame the feds for Danny boys latest **** up.

This will be despite the well known fact that all states accepted responsibility for their own quarantine programs with federal support including the ADF.

Hey government, buy me a home gym and access to a PT and time off work and someone to babysit so I can fit in a dozen hours of dedicated exercise a week.

"The Noble Park man last worked at the Grand Hyatt on January 29 and returned a negative test after the end of that shift but later developed symptoms."

Perhaps you misread this?

----------

Anyone who had visited the following exposure sites at the specified times must get tested and isolate for 14 days:

  • Woolworths in Springvale from 6.30pm — 7.30pm on January 29

  • Club Noble in Noble Park from 2:36pm — 3:30pm on January 30
  • Aces Sporting Club (Driving Range) in Keysborough from 10:00pm — 11:15pm on January 30

  • Northpoint Café in Brighton from 8:10am — 9:30am on January 31
  • Kmart in Keysborough from 4:00pm — 5:00pm on January 31
  • Kmart in Brandon Park from 4:35pm — 5:10pm on January 31
  • Coles in Springvale from 5:00pm — 6:00pm on January 31

  • Nakama Workshop in Clayton South from 11:15am — 12:00pm on February 1
  • Bunnings in Springvale from 11:30am — 12:15pm on February 1
  • Golf Academy in Heatherton from 5:19pm — 6:30pm on February 1
  • Sharetea in Springvale from 6:45pm — 7:30pm on February 1
  • Exford Hotel in Melbourne from 11:00pm — 11:35pm on February 1
  • Kebab Kingz in West Melbourne from 11:24pm — 00:15am on February 1

Yes I did, I corrected the error. It is yet to be officially confirmed that this is the UK variant and that it is anyway connected to the Australian Open quarantine.

Daniel Andrews did say this though,

'...between 500 and 600 Australian Open players or officials and others are considered casual contacts and will be forced to isolate until they test negative.
... at this stage, there’s no impact to the tournament proper'.

Daniel Andrews has himself between a rock and a hard place on this. He pushed for the Australian Open so he has to minimise the impact on the event but he cannot be seen to be putting the public at risk while it is on. If you are going to insist on face masks indoors then you have to insist on social distancing at a major sporting event and that will impact on crowd numbers.

Let's hope the virus doesn't get out into the Vic community. If it does heaven help the aged care facilities. The Feds did practically nothing to protect them last time, and that's their job. The Colbeck count is 652 deaths.

Am I correct in assuming that QR code contact tracing is not compulsory in Victoria?

Businesses can choose to opt in?
Yes, I think that's right. I was quite impressed the last time I was in SA. I had to "check-in" each time I entered a cafe/supermarket/clothing store etc etc

"In Victoria, some businesses, workplaces and premises must request that each person who attends the premise for more than 15 minutes provide their first name and phone number.

For smaller hospitality venues with a density limit of one person for every two square metres – up to 50 customers – QR code record keeping is now mandatory. All businesses and venues are still required to have pen and paper record keeping on hand as an ultimate backup, if a visitor prefers to not use the QR code method."

I don't understand why they don't just make the vaccination compulsory. We live in a world where the government will lock you in your house for months, force you to shut your business to go on the dole and prevent you from visiting dying family members in hospital ... but let's not take away someone's freedom to choose whether to be vaccinated or not.

Seriously how many more quarantine workers need to get infected before we go bush?
Melbourne hotel quarantine worker who caught COVID is 'a model employee', Premier Daniel Andrews says he built him from a kit.

If they could guarantee 100% safety then this wouldn't be even an issue of debate.

But they can't, and in a world of "my body, my choice," any government who would try to push it through as mandatory will face considerable backlash.

You can't leave the country.

You can't leave this state for that state on a constantly changing basis with no apparent rhyme or reason needed.

You can be locked in your house at gunpoint for days or weeks or months at a time totally on the government's whim and with no numbers or targets written into the legislation to guide when the lockdown will end.

At any time you may be prevented from visiting sick or dying family members in hospital.

Businesses are forced to close with proprietors and employees forced onto the dole.

People are forced to wear masks.

People are forced to check in via QR code everywhere they go.

And all of this is happily accepted without question by the vast majority.

But boy oh boy that backlash from a few nutters who think the vaccine isn't safe, let's not go there!
