It's not technically gendered but ultimately women will usually take the parental leave because of feeding and/or societal norms.

Even if dudes started being stay at home dads en masse, it's still not fair that people have children and workplaces refuse to be flexible and welcoming in relation to part time work.

The 40 hour work week is already an absolute sham where just about everyone spends a lot of their time looking busy and not actually doing work, and this is just an extension of that.

I chose to do it after spending 20+ years being and employee.

I do school drop, pickup and after school activities 4 days a week and earn a decent living in between.

I sort tea a fair bit as I work from a studio 10m from my house, so I’m about all the time. So I do lots of those 1950’s roles.

The idea of being an employee again might work but not in my current job, did that for years, filling out a strict time sheet of 7.6 hours a day, and lots of that was bollocks just for management.

My kids are lucky enough thanks to Grandpa to go to a decent private school, where everyday I have a laugh watching mostly mums in their gym gear swanning about whilst their lawyer/doctor husbands earn the big coin - they happily live that life, it’s very much alive.

Also, re work and juggling, it’s bloody hard, I’ll be out for a second stint from 8-midnight quite a bit, but I’d rather own my own time than live in the Henry Ford model.

My wife works a couple of jobs and it works around here well.
 
Adelaide’s northern suburbs are edging closer to an 80 per cent first dose vaccination mark – although parts of the region are still around 15 points behind the statewide average.

The latest federal government figures, correct as of Sunday, show that 51.3 per cent of residents over the age of 16 in the Playford region have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The local government area, which has an over-15s population of more than 70,000, is 15 percentage points behind the statewide double-dose average of 66.6 per cent recorded on the same day. Nearby, Salisbury, South Australia’s second-most populous LGA, reached 58.9 per cent double vaccinated on Sunday.

But the area’s first dose rate is picking up pace, with 76.4 per cent of over-16s in Salisbury having received at least one jab, not far behind the statewide average of 81.8 per cent. Playford on Sunday also passed the 70 per cent first dose mark, with 70.5 per cent in the area now single jabbed. The State Government on Tuesday opened a new seven-day walk-in vaccination clinic at the Munno Para Shopping Centre in a bid to boost jab rates in the Playford area.

Earlier this afternoon it was confirmed that there have been 1,981 new corona infections over the last 24 hours – the highest number since January 4.

In total, the positive cases were found among 95,775 samples – a positive percentage of 2.09, which is the highest rate of 2021.

There are now 255 people hospitalised – an increase of seven since yesterday – of whom 32 are in intensive care and 15 on respirators.

High incidence in western suburbs
No information about the people in hospital has been disclosed, but it is thought that a disproportionate number are not vaccinated and from Copenhagen’s western suburbs.

Statens Serum Institut recently confirmed that the ten municipalities with the highest rate are all in the Capital Region:
Ishøj, Glostrup, Albertslund, Brøndby, Fredensborg, Frederiksberg, Hvidovre, Rødovre, Copenhagen and Ballerup.

The Capital Region has increased its testing capacity in the areas – most notably in the western suburbs where vaccination levels are low compared to the rest of the country.

That situation is exceedingly complex and not the open-and-shut ‘the ladies are gettin’ fleeced!’ scenario it’s often portrayed to be.

There’s a roots and all complaint about the lack of pay at all levels, despite there being comparatively negligible money in the women’s game beyond international football.

Here’s an example of a common complaint:

Similar arguments are often made by WNBA players in regards to the massive salaries made by their NBA counterparts, which basically boils down to wanting to be subsidised to be a professional entertainer in the absence of corresponding revenue.

Oh they're not getting fleeced at all. The situation with the US National Women's team is entirely their own fault. They rejected the offer of the same contract that the men play under in preference for a lower performance bonuses but more guaranteed income and benefits like health insurance.

They've just since figured out, that because of their performances they would've earned more money if they'd accepted the Men's contract offer. Mind you, the US Men's team would've actually gotten an increase in pay over the same period if they were on the US Women's team offer.

He will not vaccinate with Pfitzer because he is unsure of the effects of mixing his vax, (Oxford Dictionary word of the year) with a Pfitzer booster. As I understand things the Petrovski vax is a protein based vaccine like Novavax.

Apparently Professor Petrovski is pissed off with Morrison because he has trialed and had his vaccine approved in Iran and the Federal Government will not provide him with the 300k he needs for TGA approval. He is particulary upset that the Australian Government poured millions into the failed Qld Uni jab and did not give him the same support.

A fortnight ago Ms Varnhagen was insisting that she was not ant vax. Yesterday she was high profile at an anti vax rally and insisting that it was her right not to be Vaccinated with an experimental vaccine. This is what she said,

“No one should be at threat of losing their jobs if they don’t enter a medical experiment,”

WTF the world has been using AstraZeneca, Pfitzer and Moderna vaccines for close to 14 months and they have been shown to be extremely effective in reducing death rates in the UK and the US. A little reading on the subject will show that these are the most trialed and highly researched vaccines ever developed so what is experimental about that?

Varnhagen is entitled to her views but for a health professional she appears surprisingly ill informed.


I am not attacking Varnhagan's right to choose but her reasons for not getting vaccinated are ill-informed and typical of the anti vax movement of which she claims she is not part.

Crows AFLW Coach Matthew Clarke has this to say about Varnhagen's refusal to get vaccinated,

Varnhagen was “working through her situation” and was in the process of gathering information about the vaccine.

“It's challenging because we’re dealing with people’s personal medical situations,”


Wrong Matthew, Varnhagen's medical situation has nothing to do with it. It is all about her ideological situation which for someone who works in Intensive Care is astounding. It appears that Varnhagen has worked through to the conclusion that it is dangerous get vaccinated with any of the available vaccines.

As It stands the Cows have no option in any of this.
 
I agree that at this stage, it's mostly a generational thing that will sort itself out over time. No woman is getting paid less than a man in the same role.

However, there's still a massive issue surrounding maternity leave and returning to work and part time work with young children etc where organisations don't want to deal with it and will effectively force women into putting their career on hold, and while the rules don't differentiate men from women, it's absolutely women who it happens to 98% of the time and it means they get pigeonholed into roles that can be done part time while they do have young kids and then it's much more difficult for them to move up through the organisational hierarchy afterwards.

There needs to be a lot more support for people being employed in high level positions part time. There is so much "oh that role can't be done part time" or "oh that job can't be job shared" in all sorts of industries where that's complete bullshit. A job is simply a set of tasks and responsibilities that need to be completed, and moving forward organisations need to be more flexible. A huge cultural change is needed across society really.
It starts with we've shit parental leave. Scandanavian countries are way ahead here. It should be setup 3 months for each parent (at least a month of which can't overlap), plus 6 months that can be used by either. Where you HAVE to take at least the 3 months. I was lucky enough working from home full time when the eldest was born and a couple of days a week for the youngest, to get more time than most dad's get, but as working full time not as much as I wanted. Governments (of all persuasions) have been way behind on this. Most dads the last 20 years would have jumped at being able to spend more time with their kids after birth (or since), if it wasn't going to cost more than the family could afford.

To really make parental leave more taken up it needs to be willing to touch one of the 'lightning rods' for Australian payments. That is make it that, the parent taking leave gets something like 75% or 80% (with a minimum and maximum amount) of what the parent making more earns. Of course this would provoke screams of middle/upper class welfare, but if we're serious as a country about getting more gender balance in parenting roles, than you need to address this.

COVID has given a chance to fast track it being more balanced with working from home. What the government needs to do is make it easier to claim expenses for those who do. When you look at how many billions have to go on new freeways, tunnels, rail lines etc. every decade, by more and more on the roads going to and from work, getting even a couple of those multi-billion dollar projects having their money diverted to fibre to the home everywhere and a greater share of electricity, gas etc. able to be claimed if working from home would simultaneously give: More gender balance in the workforce, less pollution from travel, reduced greenhouse emissions from travel and a better life quality for people via work-life balance. It should be a no brainer for one of the major parties, but again, except for maybe the fibre part, the rest would get people screaming about unfairly giving money (which it wouldn't be, it be more letting people keep their own, but that's a different rant) to those who can afford it.
