It starts with we've sh*t parental leave. Scandanavian countries are way ahead here. It should be setup 3 months for each parent (at least a month of which can't overlap), plus 6 months that can be used by either. Where you HAVE to take at least the 3 months. I was lucky enough working from home full time when the eldest was born and a couple of days a week for the youngest, to get more time than most dad's get, but as working full time not as much as I wanted. Governments (of all persuasions) have been way behind on this. Most dads the last 20 years would have jumped at being able to spend more time with their kids after birth (or since), if it wasn't going to cost more than the family could afford.

To really make parental leave more taken up it needs to be willing to touch one of the 'lightning rods' for Australian payments. That is make it that, the parent taking leave gets something like 75% or 80% (with a minimum and maximum amount) of what the parent making more earns. Of course this would provoke screams of middle/upper class welfare, but if we're serious as a country about getting more gender balance in parenting roles, than you need to address this.

COVID has given a chance to fast track it being more balanced with working from home. What the government needs to do is make it easier to claim expenses for those who do. When you look at how many billions have to go on new freeways, tunnels, rail lines etc. every decade, by more and more on the roads going to and from work, getting even a couple of those multi-billion dollar projects having their money diverted to fibre to the home everywhere and a greater share of electricity, gas etc. able to be claimed if working from home would simultaneously give: More gender balance in the workforce, less pollution from travel, reduced greenhouse emissions from travel and a better life quality for people via work-life balance. It should be a no brainer for one of the major parties, but again, except for maybe the fibre part, the rest would get people screaming about unfairly giving money (which it wouldn't be, it be more letting people keep their own, but that's a different rant) to those who can afford it.
If be okay with this on basis that people with children pay a tax levy to subsidise. Personally I’m pretty sick of the family hand out mentality and being asked to subsidise the life choices of others. You want to bring children into the world - fine - but at least have the self respect to bear the cost yourself rather than foisting it on to others

They'll grow up to be tax payers and you can sponge off them when you're on the pension

...Most dads the last 20 years would have jumped at being able to spend more time with their kids after birth (or since),...

I dunno

Come the weekend, quite a few dads still prioritise WOOOOOO SATURDAYSAREFORTHEBOYS WOOOO BOYS TRIP WITH THE LADS over being a dad.

But I digress, yes it would be better if parental newborn leave was more.

I'd like to have a career of stay at home dad. They are old enough to look after themselves now and hopefully drive me places soon. In fact I think I'd just call that retirement.

When a mate got his license his parents took me and him to the clipsal. About 20kms in to the trip, his dad tells him to gtfo of the back seat and drive, they're getting on the cans in the back. I had a can or two as well.

Victoria going gangbusters.
I reckon they've got this in the bag.
No way NSW catches them from here.

Having offspring is the prime objective of any species.

Childless singles should be taxed at a higher rate due to the low scale of efficiency of housing, vehicles, food consumption, power etc. Not to mention their minuscule lifetime tax inputs against their draw on the public purse in their old age.

Problem is... The Davo park/Elizabeth scum with 5 kids to 4 dad's sh*t are out breeding people with half a brain.

How does the south of Adelaide escape inclusion, in to these generalisations?

If anyone has not seen the movie ‘Idiocracy’, do yourself a favour! This scenario had been foretold!

The South has been gentrified by the mcmansions popping up in the beautiful coast.

It's not a bad area compared to the norf hellhole. Still a few shitty areas like Christie downs Morphett vale and good ol huntfield Heights
