Mega Thread Coronavirus & the AFL - Stage 4 Restrictions in Place in Vic - Part 4

Having lived in both places.
Perth does not have anywhere near as much of the demographic that we saw spreading it most prevalently.
Perth/ wa also has draconian measures in place to ensure that if you are contact traced, you go and stay in iso.

Victoria STILL doesnt.

Yeah you might want to look at how countries with covid running rampant through them are going

Then compare them to states in your own country that have it under control.

We are running free in wa
You are also home to one of the most isolated cities in the world, with no other population to speak of in a wealthy country, with people spaced out and warm weather. It is not great WA superiority you know

The whole country is isolated.... were a f##{# island.

We almost had this thing beat.

We went the hardest - the earliest.

Our laws on mandatory iso / quarantine breach are the hardest in the country and enforced rigorously.

The second time you breach - you complete your isolation in jail and the maximum penalty for breaching isolation is now a year.

Its been like that since almost day 1

One of victorias biggest problems has been people ordered into iso from contact tracing and disobeying that and going to family dinners etc. They have spread covid throughout their communities.

This isnt happening in wa because the cops are checking in you in person up to 3 times a day and by phone as well.

If you are ordered into iso here - the cops tell you - if you are not there when we check for you - expect draconian punishment.

Do you work for the WA govt??
I am not talking up Victoria, far from it. I have heard of 3 suicides from people I know since lockdown. The suicide rate is 6 fold in Victoria, businesses are going bust!!! Looking from wa you may not realise, we are in trouble with a team of clowns running the show.

There are many Islands in the world and they all have it.
Having said that the whole country is not isolated and will not be in the future. Unless you want to shut ourselves off from the world for much longer?? As you see in SA with student arrivals, this will not happen.

Especially as once these students leave quarantine, they will probably be doing online work? Could have done it from anywhere (I understand universities have internet Comms agreements with china etc)

I work in this sector so can comment. If they stayed in their home country (if fro China) our systems do not work (Great Firewall of China) and if they stay in their home country (if from anywhere) they don't spend money in our economy which is a big driver of domestic consumption. Apartments, food, drink etc.

The two biggest problems victoria faces are the iso / quarantine problem which needs to be made much more rigorous

And the reluctance to act till its too late.

May was the time to act in victoria just like two weeks ago was the time to act in nsw

With what we have learnt from the japanese model, when the numbers are quite low but steady - the entire population masking, along with social distancing and rigorous personal hygiene can cut it off without going to stage four.

Politicians unfortunately have been slow to react. What they dont understand is that getting 10’s and 20’s every day means theres a pretty good chance theres really 40 or more not getting caught in the net.

One superspreader out of every 100 and bam - you have victoria.

Victoria was kidding itself a coupla months ago - nsw is going down the same route.

Qld ....

‘I guess you can exercise ‘control’ over a student better than you can a backpacker. My daughter is leaving for uni in UK soon and the already strong rules just got a COVID 19 overlay

The suicide rate is not 6 fold in Victoria, it will be two years before those figures are released because unnatural deaths require a coronor's report. There is an increase in calls to lifeline by about 20% since stage 4 commenced in comparison to this time last year so no doubt people are suffering from the isolation. My advice would be to reach out to your friends and family. A phone call from a mate can make a big difference.

Don't know if this is true or not but I have seen it suggested that the reason vic gov didn't go harder on iso offending is that it would act as a disincentive to getting tested. The govt. was facing a massive problem with people not getting tested and couldn't risk anything that would contribute further to this. Hence we saw a lot more carrot than stick.

Thats the first time ive heard a decent argument against it.

I feel that you could legislate for the testing - but your point has given me pause.

Wow your empathy for people who have lost their businesses, jobs, relationships, loved ones due to suicide and suffered extreme levels of mental stress due to the lockdown is truelly inspiring........
Keep on hearing this "but suicide" argument. How many people have actually offed themselves because of this pandemic vs how many people would die without the restrictions? Do you actually have the statistics to back up that argument?

I'll take mental stress and job losses over overwhelmed hospitals and having to put bodies onto military trucks any time.

Ignoring the suicides, domestic violence?

Covid = the last straw.

The 1% at risk people need to isolate. A more reasonable approach is required for the sake of the other 99%.

Do you think financial stress is causing more suicides? & if that's the case, why wouldn't you blame the banks/lenders who don't have hardship allowances or the government who simultaneously overestimate their spend but then refuse to extend it, preferring to bank the money?

The solution to the mental health problems caused by lockdown is to fix the mental health care system. Not to not lockdown.
