Countering the Don't Argue

Really difficult. Adam Cooney was talking about it on SEN this morning. They practice negating it and they know he's going to do it. In game play, when he's got it by the time they think about it, it is done.

Why is Dusty allowed to don't argue people high?

Before any Tigers fans say no im not salty.
Been wondering this for quite awhile?

He's extremely frustrating as umps never seem to pay htb on him even if he does drop it or incorrect disposals.

Take the hips and concede a handball

Take the hips but lead with the shoulder. Guy keeps putting his arm out to try and brush off tackles and keeps copping a hard shoulder to his exposed abdomen and he'll either be sitting on the bench or questioning whether it's a good idea. Most tacklers in the afl aren't great at it. The tackle to try and lock the ball in due to HTB rules. However if it costs you a couple of goals through spillages in the first half but their playmakers end up with a couple of busted ribs then I can guarantee the second half swings the other way.

Oh yeah. Drive them backwards every time. Go in hard and low with real intent.

You lead with the front arm ready to brush off or at least partly counter the fend but the real intent is in smashing your shouder into their lower ribs and gut. Couple of blokes get hurt and the don't argue won't be happening against your side.

I did this. August 27 1990.

Players these days don't get low enough in the tackle. That don't argue on Crameri is the perfect example, Crameri isn't even trying to go low.

Dusty is another matter entirely because he has the mix of power and speed that makes him nearly impossible to tackle. Reckon only the players who are absolutely ferocious in their tackling like Viney/Cyril would be able to stop him a couple times /10.

Thing with Dusty is that he has elite core strength, so unless you anticipate it with a few second, or triple his weight, you're unlikely to hold him up to forced an ineffective disposal.

The best way to counter dusty is to straight up give away the free kick and hold him in place. The "professional free kick" as they call it. Keep him stationary and behind the mark as much as possible.

Imo trying to counter the don't argue is futile.

You mean he turns into a North player.

Nah, that only requires an extra $400K of Richmond's money to stop that from happening.

Few ways can be attempted.

Keep body low, aim for hips and pin ball carrying arm.

If big bugger, atempt to break it with force with lower gravity and intent

Expect a fend off, use arm to deflect fend off and tackle.

Sounds so easy when not done at game pace doesnt it.

Honestly, you don't.

This thread is like a child planning how to tackle an adult. It's not a question of strategy.

It's impossible.

It's called "don't argue" for a reason - Dusty is a boss out there and you don't have a choice but to look like a fool if you attempt to stop him.

Honestly, I'm surprised this isn't happening already. Anyone going to tackle Dusty could drop a bit and win a free kick.

Dusty locks eyes on his tackler, so he just needs to angle his arm 10 degrees lower and that's enough to counter.

Nothing works - everyone has tried everything.

Don't argue with it, it's impossible.

The martial arts answer:
- go in for the tackle, anticipate a DA, and either catch the player's arm and bring it down OR dodge the outstretch arm by side-stepping and then tackle again, not allowing the player to do another DA!

The footballer's answer:
- go in the tackle low and target the waist/lower trunk, head-first just to the side of the player. The DA would then likely to hit the tackler's head and shoulders which would result in a free against the DA, or if the DA misses, the player would then be tackled

An attempt to be funny, answer:
- a tackler acting as a decoy from the front, and another tackler entering from behind. The DA can only fend off one opponent from the front, and before he knows it, BANG! A DA sandwich! HTB!!

Couldn't you just use your arm to raise the DA up into your face and throw your head back ?

Or you could grab the jumper under the armpit with one hand and the wrist with the other and pull them down.

That's not true, he's our worst offender when it come to giving away HTB free kicks. It's a high risk, high reward play that he's very good at executing
