Exnay on the ommunismcay ateymay...

Sorry mate. In my defence, I'm a die hard Friedman-ite, but I understand that others may not share my views with respect to the market economy.

Michael Burry, one of the most remarkable analysts of all time and a former Stanford pathology doctor, far smarter than any of us, joined twitter for the first time specifically to post his concerns about the lockdown in the USA. You may remember Michael Burry from the movie The Big Short.

Stay-at-home policies need not be universal. COVID-19 is a disease that is somewhat lethal for the obese, the very old, the already-sick. Public policies have no nuance because they want to maximize fear to enforce compliance. But universal stay-at-home policies devastate small and medium sized business and indirectly beat up women and children, kill and create drug addicts, engender suicides, and in general create tremendous misery and mental anguish. These secondary and tertiary effects are getting no play in the prevailing narratives.

Stay-at-home policies are only good for equipment and medicine shortages at or near peak disease. But this could be achieved with the order affecting a much more targeted group of people. Meanwhile, stay-at-home reduces and slows the development of herd immunity to COVID. Herd immunity is a fundamental step to putting this behind us.

>5 million victims of abuse in last <12 mos. Children involved 30-60% of the time. Locking these victims in with their abusers during a stressful period and job losses? Earth's most under-reported crime gets a big boost. At what cost prevention?

Nigeria, a country with over 90 million people in extreme poverty (earning less than $1.90/day) has called for emergency aid to help deal with the economic crisis due to its COVID-19 lockdown. How many people will die in this 1 country alone, considering 90m are already in extreme poverty and most will now have no income at all?

An estimated 2 million children in Nigeria suffer from severe acute malnutrition (visible severe wasting, or by the presence of nutritional oedema). How many of them will die when much of the country is driven into complete destitution and can't earn even their current meagre incomes because the country's 2 biggest cities have been put into lockdown?

I think with hindsight the lockdown was a good strategy for Australia. Though our lockdown has looser rules and is intended to last longer than some of the European countries.

But for poorer countries it may not be that effective in slowing transmissions and their economies may not be able to sustain it. When they announced it in Indonesia and India, there was a lot of travel from the cities back to their home villages. There is more crowded conditions so harder to practice social isolation and they don't have the resources to contact trace and isolate people. So I think at some point the poorer countries will lift the lockdowns, it will spread and lots of people will die.

So over here in WA you can now get fined 50k for using park equipment, which I've done a few times as I use it to do pull ups now the gym is shut. whilst I've done this I've always used gloves and also wiped the bar down with a disinfectant wipe when finished.

Wonder what the fine is for letting infected passengers of a cruise ship and let them all disperse around the country is.

i think people think you lockdown for a few weeks and its eradicated

the exit strategy is hopefully being worked on
The exit strategy is death for some & a "what was all the fuss about" for others.
Making observations from a food business point of view, it seems most of the complacency is coming from the young & the extreme panic (rightly so) is coming from most of the elderly. It's mind boggling what I've seen these last few weeks. Don't wear gloves people unless you change them every time you touch something that's not yours. Just wash your hands & sanitise regularly, be organised with your shopping lists, get your groceries & get out of stores/shops ASAP.
Stay safe everyone.

I’ve probably observed the opposite in my area older people strolling around

the exit strategy will be death for
Some unfortunately but we seem to be going to the hide inside route so far

gets hard to police

presume we wont be back to normal until there is a vaccine, maybe we get a more semi normal before then

apparently theres some government modelling out soon
There is still not a vaccine for SARS, the last coronavirus that made headlines.
Not holding my breath for that.
I think we'll have to learn to manage life with it for quite a while.
I'd hope the border stays closed for a good while. People can start going on Aussie beach holidays instead of Bali - unless they want to pay for 14 days in a hotel under lockdown on top of their trip.
It's great seeing mums have more time with their babies, and families ride together round my way.
This could be the complete re-set from endless consumerism and "economic growth" we needed.
I know I won't miss a thousand more shitty high-rise to fit in the 300,000 arriving every year thanks to our governments.
If only the footy was back....

This... stay home, stay safe... hang in there!

If it follows the route of previous viruses, there's another wave coming.... think tsunami! Rarely if ever just one wave, usually two or three, one after the other

I had thought when it all started that I would be able to stay home and go out only to shop once every three weeks. Instead I’m finding I have to go out at least once sometimes twice a week. Still that’s better than people still out each day working. Managed to buy myself a load of those n95 respirators.- pack of 20. Supposed to be disposable but I want to try and get 5 uses each one which they say is the outer limit. Then I had to work out how to sanitise the things. Apparently oven at 70c for 30 min or 10 min in water vapour from boiling water. Didn’t appeal to me that virus particles would be in the oven and knew I’d burn my hands above a pot of boiling water. In the end I bought a garment steamer for $30 and will use it.

I’m taking responsibility for 4 households. Mine with 2 adults one teen. My ex 1 adult 2 teens. My GF. My brother and his wife. It’s wearing on me.

I am now pretty confident that we will get control of effective treatment options within 2 months and when we do the death rate will plummet.

I think our medical people and health system are showing both are best in the world. Thank goodness I’m Australian. They are smashing it!!!!

Only concern is that we are heading into winter and it could spike then. Otherwise we are massively luckly to be an island nation and have great healthcare.

Pretty optimistic tbh.

Governments have to be really careful with projections and lifting restrictions. If restrictions are lifted or weakened and the curve starts going up again it will be hard to convince people to go back to restrictions again.

Yes virus survives longer BUT with hand hygiene and social distancing the virus won’t have anyone to transmit to. I’m inclined to think that the plateau will remain static or at worst increase a few but not significantly.

I like the idea of drones spraying.

I hope we get to a point where the country can resume normal life but with closed borders. At least the footy can restart then

I hope we get to the point where those who unfortunately do die can get a proper send off with family friends loved ones

We are months from that as it’s a nightmare with the amount this virus can spread. Probably not till later in the year maybe our summer

More just realistic. Until a vaccine and/or anti viral drugs these privileges won’t be available.

neither of which might happen

Eventually there will be less restrictions either way

now I doubt you will be jetting overseas, but people can’t be captive at home indefinitely

Maybe but can you actually trust people with less restrictions. Doubtful.

Actually don’t think the restrictions are that bad anyway

There is no vaccine for SARS and that first broke out 17 years ago. If your plan is a lockdown, plan for a very long one.

Next case study for anyone this hasn't quite hit home for yet: Bali. Bali has a population of over 4 million and 80% of its GDP comes from tourism. There was already extensive poverty in Bali before these lockdowns. How many people will suffer as a result of 80% of the island's GDP being destroyed?

in Bali, most people earn only a couple of hundreds of dollars a month. They live from day to day or month to month. If they lose their jobs, they will have nothing to fall back on."

Tourism accounts for 10 per cent of Indonesia's total workforce, employing more than 12 million workers, many of which are in Bali, according to 2018 data from the World Tourism and Travel Council.
Many of those 12 million people will have zero income for 12-18 months. They are not receiving a $1500 fortnightly JobKeeper payment. How many deaths will there be in Indonesia, especially Bali, as a result of these lockdowns?

It is astonishing arrogance and delusion to sit snug in your houses and say lets shut down society. What we are doing right now will have devastating consequences for hundreds of millions of people. More people may die in India as a result of Modi's lockdown than will die in the entire world as a result of COVID-19

EDIT: 400 MILLION Indians to sink further into poverty as a result of the lockdown (https://economictimes.indiatimes.co...to-poverty-un-report/articleshow/75041922.cms). What's the worst that can happen in a lockdown? Other than destroying the lives of half a billion people.
