How'd you guys feel about this?

I normally love seeing a Coach give a player a massive spray, but for some reason, it didn't sit that comfortably with me last night.

I think it's a combination of two things;

It doesn't seem to fit with what we're about. Craig has always been really strong on education and constructive feedback, and a massive blow up at a player doesn't seem to be his thing.

Secondly, and it's probably more emotive than reasonable, I love big Ivan, and he's clearly struggling at the moment - but I think it's more poor form than lack of effort.

I don't know - I didn't hate the spray, I normally enjoy them, I'm just curious as to how everybody else felt about it?

No matter who is the coach and who is the player I do not mind if a Coach delivers a spray, however it needs to be done only when required and not repeatedly week in / week out

The Key for me is how the Coach uses the spray tactic, what I mean by this is. If a Coach uses the spray week in week out then players will either drop their heads or they will be pretty much over it as they hear it every week.

For example, if a Dad yells at his kids every day the kids will eventually think "just Dad going off his head again, what ever". However if a Dad very rarely yells at his kids and on one occassion does raise his voice and shows some emotion then the impact on the kids is very different, the kids would think "wow Dad is really upset, I mucked up and I need to correct the situation"

I am happy if a coach uses the spray sparingly as this then becomes a very effective strategy.

Put yourself in Maric's shoes, as a player he would know that Craigy is usually composed and rarely delivers a spray, so the impact of Craigy's spray would hit home on Maric and the playing group because they would know that Craigy would only deliver a spray if it was warranted and I would expect the player to respond accordingly

Maric is a big boy lets not wrap him up in cotton wool, he needs to take it on the chin, show some real character and respond accordingly

Maric's performance last night was a bit soft

I can't see why you would have been upset with Maric getting a spray - I would have liked to have given him one.

Craig doesn't hand them out lightly so I'd be confident that it was a well-deserved spray.

Maric is struggling with his ruck work at the moment. You'd be lucky to get a sheet of paper under his feet when he's leaping for the ball, and he gives away a lot of dumb frees.

IMO it's time to bring the in-form Griffin back into the team to give our on-ballers the chance of a first look at the ball.

Apparently, he was blasting him for how many frees he was giving away in the ruck contests - but I didn't see that many

It was weird though, because he was full on yelling and he wasn't even looking at Ivan (who seemed to be talking to Matty Clarke), then he continued walking around players (while yelling) then finally got in front of Maric and continued yelling at him, although neither Maric or Clarke were looking at Craigy.:confused:

so confused about it! haha

I'm stoked, all those people who have a crack at Craigy for not showing enough can clearly see his is passionate.

good on him, he can generally give a good one (us v Saints a few years back) and I reckon he'll start giving a few more, mainly because he has gone from a squad of more mature players who perhaps a spray won't work as much to a younger team that may respond more from a spray (weird logic, probably flawed but what i'm saying is it sits fine with me )

Craigy only pulls out the spray on very rare occasions. I think this is the 3rd time I can recall?

I am sure Maric deserved it. Not only was he having a shocker, but he didn't seem to have the right intensity.

I still think he'll be a good ruckman. It's around this time in his career though where he is going to hit his straps, and show us all just what he's going to be like over time.

I totally missed it, but I'll say this, I hope Maric doesn't get dropped this week (I'm fairly sure he won't be, but some people here have been asking for it) - he seemingly did not respond well to it on the day but next week will be his real oppurtunity to respond to it, and I want to see how he goes. If he has a great game, excellent work, keep him in. If he doesn't improve, he's gone.

As others have said, Craig is an educator. If he had a spray I'm sure it was planned and not done on the spur of the moment. I'm sure it would have been about getting to the crux of a problem and hopefully stinging Maric into action. Now it's up to Maric to take that on the chin and improve.

We often hear players talking about how Craigy instills home truths into them (Johncock is the most recent example) behind closed doors. It's usually not done so publically but perhaps this was exactly what Maric needed. He's certainly gone backwards on last year so far. Hopefully he can pick up the slack and get back to the lion-hearted bull we know he can be :thumbsu:

Ivan cannot be dropped. Who will protect the smaller guys when they start fights they can't finish

That is the first time I have seen Craigy go completely off his nut at a player. Great to see some emotion but it did seem a little undeserved. Watching the replay tonight it was funny seeing Neil collect his emotions after Ivan gave away that 50. He knew the cameras were going to focus straight on the box.

He dropped a massive F-Bomb around that stage.

Ivan normally gives his all, which I think is why the spray didn't sit that well with me, but, like I said, some time in the SANFL wouldn't hurt him.

I'm more than happy for Craigy to give Maric a spray, he was being done by Mark Blake of all people, for the second time this year:thumbsd: Craigy doesn't give out a spray unless its deserved, he is always very calculated with these types of things and from what I've heard about Maric, he wouldn't be one to shy away from it and run back to Victoria (cough Hud cough son cough cough), he'll take it on board and improve.

I doubt he'll be dropped and I don't know whether we'll bother bringing Griffin back this week, by the looks its only Meesen they'll have to contend with, probably get better competition in the SANFL. Might as well bring in Sellar or Mckernan, give them some match practise:rolleyes::D Having said that though, from the little I saw, Meese didn't look too bad, there is certainly talent there which is the frustrating thing, maybe he's suddenly decided to pull his finger out.:o

Seemed a bit unusual. Matthew Clarke was quietly and calmly talking to Maric and he seemed surprised when Craig let fly. Then tried to carry on as though nothing had happened!

I have a bit of sympathy for Ivan. The free kicks paid for ruck infringments are by far the most baffling in the game. The only reason they don't get more coverage is that they've been baffling for 8+ years so we've got used to having no idea what the free was for.

Hands in the back and the other changes are flavour of the month so get all the attention.

Every time I see Maric or Tippett take the ball out of the ruck contest and get tackled I wince, just knowing that one day some umpire is going to remember the Matthew Primus rule and pay a free kick against us.

Unfortunately Port Adelaide have the bye next week in the SANFL so if Maric is dropped he'll be sitting around doing nothing on the weekend. I'd give him one more week to find some touch and if not then send him back to the SANFL, no good having him dropped a week the Magpies have a bye which means he'll take longer to regain form.

Yeah I agree, we've got Melbourne next week who aren't exactly known for their strong ruck division. He should have a good match and play himself into form.

He needed a spary, his centre bounce work was very poor. He doesn't seem to have much leap at the moment.

I wouldn't drop him, but i'd bring Griffin in.

Exactly. They genuinely just seem to pull them out at random. Regularly, the competing ruckmen have no idea which one of them has earned the free kick. The 50 that Maric gave away was also an absolute joke. He's a bit unlucky.

It's actually quite amusing to watch the too ruckman turnt o the umpires with a basffled look on their face, both thinking...."is it mine?"

normally a good spray from the coach is to help fire up a player...in Ivan's case, it seemed to tear him down moreso...which was why i felt sorry for Ivan at that very moment (even if he did deserve it - football-wise).

That's exactly it.

You get the impression Ivan would do anything for his Coach and his team-mate; and while he is definitely struggling, it's not because he can't be bothered - he's just going through a poor patch of form.

I've got no doubt Maric knows he's struggling, and it just seemed like the spray from Craigy really hurt him - hopefully in a positive way I guess.

The spray was fine, having in sit on the bench at the start of the last quarter was a mistake. Would have been best to let him get out there while the spit was still warm on his face rather than stew on the bench and think about things too much and then come on and play poorly.

Maric was awful on Saturday. Not only was he well beaten by Blake he was undisciplined and cost us on the scoreboard. I haven’t been all that impressed with his season to date. Serviceable at best. Griff has not only been pushing for inclusion, from what has been said on this board and in the papers, he is demanding it, bring him in. If it means leaving Tippett up forward and having two ruckmen then so be it (weather permitting).

Meese has done pretty well for Melbourne the last couple of weeks. Those of you bagging him may get a shock this week. I was no fan of the guy while with us, but he looked great on the weekend. He looks an excellent tap ruck making the inclusion of Griff even more important. Leave Maric in to rough the Meese up and bring Griff in to at least make us competitive at the stoppages.

The one big thing i have noticed this year about Maric is that he hardly seems to leap or get off the ground for whatever reason

wat i dont understand is how can so many ppl be giving him the votes for btm, and now after one week start bagging his whole seaon....
