My 10 year old son just asked me the same question. I couldn’t answe him. It does seem bizarre when u think about it

What about if it hits u outside the line of off u can be out only if u don’t play a shot? Half the people umpiring local cricket don’t know the rule and it causes problems

Basically it's to stop negative bowling.

Bowling on the players pads and stacking the leg side with fielders.

A normal batting stance has the bat outside the off stump - it's not like a batsman can remove his legs so it would be pretty advantageous to the bowler if he could angle in from the leg side and still have LBW in play.

They went off the field 5 minutes before lunch and didn't come back.

Play is extended by half an hour in the middle session each day, because of no play on day 1.
