Maybe tailenders who are absolutely hopeless (and defenceless against fast, hostile bowling) should simply not be allowed to bat. That Sri Lankan #10 - Lakmal I think - would be a good example. And to think there's a bloke who comes in AFTER him. The Sri Lankan cricket authorities should be ashamed.

The most entertaining event of the summer has been watching Shane Warnes spiraling neurotic disorder.

Warnies lost the plot ...hes become like an aged Hollywood actor who still seeks the limelight, but the world has moved on

and it so hard to take him seriously now with his Thunderbird features

We should smash India who are hopeless atm.

i'd like to see us try this:

Warner
Watson
Hughes
Doolan
Clarke
Wade
Johnson
Siddle
O'Keefe
Bird
Lyon

But our team for England assuming everyone is healthy is impossible to select.
On talent, it is probably the following 12 and I'd be very confident of beating England with this team:

Warner
Watson
Hughes
Doolan
Clarke
Wade
Johnson
Pattinson
Starc
Cummins
Bird
Holland

The interesting thing for me is that Hughes averages 36 with 3 hundreds & Watson averages 37 with 2 hundreds yet most people rate Watson , but not Hughes ?

I know Watsons bowling is a big plus, but hes either opened or been at 4 this summer so his primary job is scoring runs..yet his batting output is very similar to Hughes

He has scored 20 first class centuries and has just turned 24.

Is he the luckiest player to ever walk the planet?

Has scored 2 80 odds in 3 tests since his recall and has looked good other than being run out a few times by Clowan.

The "kid" is a wonderful young player. Holds the record for the youngest EVER player to score 2 centuries in a single test. Has made big hundreds in shield finals. And has a much better record than all of the players that I assume you'd replace him with.

Doolan over finch?

In test match cricket. Yes.

They are poles apart in FC Aggregates and Averages (570 @ 81.42 for the summer) and IIRC that was still the best form from which to pick the national team. All this whilst playing on the stickiest wicket in the country and after making 160 odd against the South Africans. He is the best number 4 in the land and should be given his shot at it whilst he is is hot form, rather than trying to orchestrate opening batsmen to fill the first 4 spots on the team. It's nonsensical.

I do like the idea of Aaron Finch coming into the team as a long term #6, but in England in 2013 I'd rather go for the more technically correct player with form on seaming "english style" conditions given the frailities of our batting line up.

But hey, that's just me.

Hughes has made something like 1300 runs in close to 40 innings in test cricket, highly inflated by your (fairly) indicated recent good form.

He was good in the last couple of games but I don't feel thats a reflection of just how good he is, he destroys games when he's playing state cricket but as an international player I feel he is slightly lacking, prone to stage fright and brain explosions.

The Watson comparison is a fair one, but as pointed out Watson is less one dimensional than Hughes, he can also bowl and field rather well, whereas Hughes can ummm... chuck the keepers gloves on if Wade/Haddin/Paine break their hands.

Are his recent innings an indication of his development as a player? I hope so, I'm happy to be proven wrong, but when Hughes fails he fails spectacularly.

It's fine to chuck up his first class stats, but when the majority of his good innings have come at state level I don't think it tells the whole story.

I think our batsmen will struggle big time in India against the spinning ball. Now that Hussey is gone, Clarke is the only batsmen that has shown any consistency. It won't be a walkover.

158 for SA against a vic team with Pattinson, Siddle, Mackay, Hastings was fair.

But in the past you may have been right but he has changed his technique considerably and looks very stable and seems to have opened up the leg side to scoring something he was unable to do earlier in his career.

FC form is the only form from which to compare players.

Hughes averages 45.55 & 36 in tests (3 hundreds)
Cowan @ 39.84 & 34 in tests (1 ton)
Khawaja @ 43.03 & 29 in tests
Doolan @ 39.16
Watson @ 44.02 & 37 in tests (2 tons)
Cooper @ 31.54
S. Marsh @ 35.61 & 29 in tests (1 ton)
Finch @ 29.96

Not that stats are everything but he is considerably younger than all of the above mentioned players.

He is 7 years younger than Watson and has scored more FC hundreds.

True TT..I remember him being bounced out by Lance Cairns and then having the decision overturned because of intimidatory bowling...from Cairns !

Lyon bowls quicker than Lance Cairns !

Was Higgs wearing a helmet? I can vaguely recall the incident and thinking at the time that the umpires have lost the plot (again) in their favouritism for the home team.

Cairns was medium pace at best and couldn't have intimidated a club cricketer.

Speaking of ''Garry'', I have to laugh when he's racing through his overs when he's the one who is supposed to be spinning out the opposition.

Hughes is from NSW. He has the unconditional support of the cricketing mafia. Several of the Ch 9 commentators are members, as is Mark Waugh on Fox. There has been non-stop whiteanting of Matthew Wade's keeping in an effort to get Haddin back into Australian colours. Listening to them chip away is bloody annoying.

What happens to Lyon against the Indians?

While Wade's keeping hasn't been perfect, and he's had some pretty shocking muckups the railing he was given by the channel 9 guys was completely over the top.

Some of the catches he took Haddin wouldn't take in a million years, faster reaction speed and he's more agile. Sickens me that they're still desperate to get Haddin back in.

He gets smashed, dosn't take any wickets and is shown to be the fraud we all know he is.
When has he taken the wicket of a batsmen who wasn't trying to score runs? answer never. If a batsmen is there trying to bat out time then Lyon has no chance of taking a wicket. He failed miserably in Adelaide and and Hobart. And not even Warney could take wickets in India so I really don't give him a hope of keeping his spot for England.

I would go with 4 quicks + Clarke (best spinner in the country), Warner (Leggie) and either Hussey or Maxwell as the offie if they are selected over Doolan.

We do have 3 vics in the team and Wade's keeping is horrific. He needs to improve.

Yeah, nah. Haddin's screwed despite his fanboi's screaming. The real danger to Wade is Tim Paine, he just needs 12 months continuous cricket and he'll be back in the frame.
