Great days they were. I was 15/16 on those years, Would like to experience now as an adult.Hi non-Crows fan here but footy lover. I have been watching finals from the 1990s recently including 1997. I just wanted to share my thoughts on this particular year.
Do you realise how insane and out of the box that premiership was?
Crows were a solid team all year and deserved their spot no doubt but the prelim and Granny were wild.
#1 Prelim - I watched the whole last quarter yesterday and that might be the biggest choke of all time by the Dogs. The game was over 10 mins into the last quarter, both teams looked to be playing out the game leading to the inevitable result and the commentators were already talking about a Dogs v Saints granny. Dogs had without exaggeration 8 opportunities to completely ice the game. Terrible kicking and decision making stopped that occurring and the Crows came from ******* nowhere and you know the rest.
#2 Granny - Obviously Jars last quarter effort is legendary, my favourite goal was his last where he seemed to grab the ball out of thin air and snap it for the sealer - just exquisite skills, an all time great.
I don’t think Shane Ellen’s effort is talked about enough though. The man kicked 5 in a Granny as a defender. Previous to this game he had kicked 3 goals his whole career including none for the entire season until the granny. He then only kicked another 8 for the rest of his career. This is absolutely unheard of these days and I doubt there has ever been anything like it. It’s one of the all time best AFL stories and that flag is like no other.
Anyway that’s all I wanted to say, needed to vent. I am hurting for you as you were obviously robbed and wish you all the best next season.
But have watched the games 1000s of times. Shane Ellen starting at full forward with Mods out injured. 2 first qtr goals. Blighty ended up moving him to half back in the second half on Keogh. Kicked 3 goals running down from half back in the second half.
