Although a win would have been nice, it was still a bloody good effort against a near full strength Eagles. Alot of the kids showed really good signs and it was pleasing that our keys forwards all done there bit

What the heck is going on in here? I listened to the game on radio, sounds like a few of the youngsters showed some promising signs.

Cook kicked a good goal, Sloane did soome nice work and Petrenko seemed to find a fair bit of the footy and looks set to debut in Round 1. I heard Mackay, Otten and Jacky quite often aswell.

Don't like what I'm hearing about the ruckmen.

This is going to be a VERY long season methinks.

Agree 2 practice game losses is awful. I have us as a lock for bottom two because we lost to West Coast who lost in the first round (simple mathematics of course!).

But as long as we support the boys blindly and question none of the clubs actions we should be fine I think.

LEAVE ADELAIDE ALONE! ALL OF YOU!

Unfortunately we will never get anywhere because we live in a pissant town.

What do I mean? You know. You're part of it. You pissant.

You're all pissants.

Yeah we lost by 10.

WC 15.5 95 ADE 12.13 85

We made quite the comeback in the third quarter, only to be overrun by the Eagles in the last.

Also, I've got some notes which I took down of the game, mostly from the 5AA commentary. So if anyone didn't get to hear the game:

1st qtr:
- WC 4.1 25 ADE 3.1 19
- Moran 3 marks against
- Walker 1 goal
- Hentschel 1 goal
- Ball skill issues, can't hit a target by foot.
- Edwards looking good, having a good game.
- Stevens strong mark. Genuine footy courage.
- Mackay doing well.
- Not clean ball movement.
- Crows defense can't get it right. Johncock manning Lynch.

2nd qtr:
- WC 7.1 43 ADE 5.6 36
- Gill poor kick into 50
- Sloane shows pace
- Gill point
- Sellar to defence
- Turn overs in forward line
- Stevens goal from free
- WC advantage in height and strength
- Crows defensive zone breaking down. Loose WC everywhere.
- Stevens point
- Hentschel limping to bench, suspected corkie.
- Gone into 50 many times for little productivity
- Doughty's been great
- Issues for Crows on ball, too much pressure on youngsters, look rusty.
- Moran looks more comfortable up forward
- Moran point
- Walker goal, wonderful kick.
- Gill lively this quarter
- Shirley point
- Zone leaked like a siv
- Petrenko like a 'young McLeod'
- Sloane point
- Otten and Petrenko done some great things

3rd qtr
WC 10.2 62 ADE 11.8 74
- Cook play of the day, mark, finish run, pace, goal.
- Stevens goals in front. Great movement of ball from one end to another, Edwards and Thompson good.
- Andy Otten doing well.
- Edwards goal, Crows last three goals in four mins, now infront.
- West Coast look tired, Crows looking super fit. Mackay, Otten, Jacky, Petrenko.
- Jacky another goal within minutes.
- All of a sudden, getting to every ball first, tackling 1 %ers etc.
- Sellar not looking at ease on a defencive line.
- Ball speed
- Hentschel goals from 30 out.
- Gill goal
- Petrenko finds the ball at ease just has to use it better.
- McLeod behind.
- Moving ball better, quicker.
- Otten point
- Hentschel point

4th qtr
WC 15.5 95 ADE 12.13 85
- Jacky point
- Cook behind
- Walker point
- Martin great mark between two players
- Gill point
- Stevens goal

Haha apparently they were all caught out of position. Pretty much sounds like our defense wasn't that good all night.

Both weeks have highlighted the gaping hole left by the loss of BOTH Bassett (ret) and Rutten (inj). I'd like to see how Moran went with both Bock and Rutten in the side - being more like the spare man in defence like Bassett was rather than a KPP.

A few things to comment on here...

Firstly, I do agree that our list was in better condition in 2005 than was generally recognised. To a certain extent, 2004 was a blip in a formline which included finals every other year from 2001 to 2008. However, this concession comes with a rider - the list inherited by Neil Craig was completely bereft of youth. At the time he took over, our list contained one solitary teenager - Fungus Watts. In terms of youth development, this has meant that all of the youths being developed have been those drafted since he took over as coach.

Secondly, I also agree that the Adelaide team list lacks genuine top-tier, grade 1 talent. This begs the question of how we are to obtain such talent? The AFL specifically changed the rule to prevent us drafting the only F/S talent we've ever had and we have never bottomed out. In the modern era, where drafting has become more science than art, these are the only two paths to obtaining elite talent. Are people genuinely suggesting that we should deliberately aim to finish down the bottom of the ladder in order to have access to such talented players? There's a new thread today asking just this question.

Thirdly, someone (maccas_no_1?) posted a list of years that NC has been in charge - from 2004-2009. It's unfair to include 2004 on this list given that he took over mid-season and had no say in the gameplans nor the players on the list. 2009 hasn't even begun yet. So, we need to be judging NC over a 4 year window (2005-08), not 6 years.

Fourthly, Adelaide's junior development is nowhere near as bad as many on this board would like to think. I did an analysis on it last year, examining the player development of every youngster each year over the duration of NC's reign. The thread ended in a big debate with Crow-mo. The upshot was that very few if any of the kids to that point had had their development impeded. Arguably the only name I could think of would be Taylor Walker. I failed to locate the thread in question, but am happy to add a link if someone wants to do a more thorough search.

Fifthly, there is no evidence whatsover to support the theory that bottoming out will help you win the flag. St Kilda are a classic example of how it can go wrong. Carlton's bottoming out has given them a great midfield for the future, but they still look shakey at either end of the ground - particularly once Fevola retires. Hawthorn did more than just bottom out - they also traded for a multitude of high draft picks. Even then, it was their older players who won them the GF, players like Hodge & Mitchell who were around long before they hit rock bottom in 2004 & 2005.

Premierships winning teams usually have several things in common. Firstly, they have 2 or 3 freakishly elite players who are able to alter the course of a game. We have none. They also have a large group of players in the 100-150 game band, players who are physically mature and who have gelled together through similar experiences over a 4-6 year timeframe. We have just 6 players in this bracket, with only 10 having 100+ games experience in total. We need to be patient and wait for the Craig draftees to mature - VB should be the first of these, due to play his 100th in early 2010. The rest are at least a year behind him.

Neil Craig is in the process of transforming the team. When he arrived he had no youngsters to work with whatsoever. Today we have 21 players aged 22 or younger (excluding rookie listed players). This is the group which we hope will take us to our next flag, but we need to be patient as we wait for them to develop. Like Rachel Hunter said in the shampoo commercial... "It won't happen overnight, but it will happen."

at last someone speaks some sense

Yeah we lost but it's not all doom and gloom.

Lets wait and see how we go once we have slotted Porps and Van berlo into the midfield, Rutten and Symes back into the defence and Tippett into the forward line before making any rash decisions about how the year will turn out.

Adding these player will automatically increase the overall effect of the team in a positive way.

Had Rutten played last night, i doubt Lynch would have kicked 4 goals. If we play Porps in the forward line, this will take another good defender away from Walker and with Hentschel starting to look good, this will also take another good defender away from Tippett. Had Rutten and Porps played last night, we win. But who cares what the result of a pre season game is. it's the same as 2005/06 we won every game in the pre season, it doesn't mean squat. Round 1 and from there is the key.

Things are not picture perfect red roses stuff, but they are not black death roses stuff either. This is a development year, as long as we get 10 - 15 games into Walker, Otten, Dangerfield, Jackie and Petrenko and another 15+ games into Tippett, McKay, Vince and Douglas improvement will happen. We may not beat top 8 side this year but we will slowly turn the corner.

Have some faith people.

Good to hear that Rowdy had a good one, along with some of the young guys; Tex, Petrenko etc.
