Knights and Douglas are both walk up starts in round 1.

Who's going to be squeezed out to fit them both in Gets!? Not trying to be a smart-arse, because I'd love both of them to be regulars this year, but it's easier said than done fitting them into the 22.

Stevens played a fair whack of the game there. Ended up playing HFF in the last quarter.

Mattner started in the backlines and may have had 1 kick-out but played primarily up forward.

As usual Knights kicking was a mixture of good and not so good but 30 disposals for a young mid-fielder is a great start to build on. :thumbsu:

Cheers macca :thumbsu:

Good call, i think many people have about 26 players they want in the team.

So with only 2 pre-season games remaining, i would expect the side to begin settling towards round 1, with the final game of NAB challenge a full 'dress-rehearsal'.

Many people posted their pre-pre-season prediction/preference for round 1 team. Any changes from anyone?

For me (compared to my 22 a few weeks ago), obviously Griffen in for Maric, Torney instead of Pfeiffer (a conservative move but at this stage is better), Ricciuto probably not ready, Knights in and the final place in 22 decided by opposition line-up/our team plan whether we want an extra tall or small. Therefore...

B: Bassett, Rutten, Johncock
HB: McLeod, Stevens, Torney
C: Mattner, Goodwin, Reilly
HF: Burton, Perrie, Thompson
F: Edwards, Welsh, Bock
1R: Hudson, van Berlo, Knights
Int: Griffen, Douglas, Doughty, Porplyzia/McGregor

E: Shirley, Porplyzia/McGregor, Bode/Tippett (at least one tall emergency)

It's going to be interesting to see what happens this year. If we are going to progress as a club and barring injury, the likes of Douglas, Knights, Pfeiffer, Porp, Griffen and Meesen and Maric ( when fit ) must be given more gametime. You would also think that maybe Tippett and definately Vince may play a few games.

Not saying they have done anything wrong, but the likes of Doughty, Shirley, Bode, Massie, McGregor and Welsh etc will probably make way for the youngsters and the likes of Roo, Stiffy, Perrie. Unfair yes, but that's football.

Bring it on.

Agreed.... kinda

Give them games because their form demands it, but I also see the flip side of long term planning.

Now for some names. Doughty and Shirley would be quite safe for now, Bode and Massie look to be the ones under the gun as well as Torney. McGregor and Welsh... well taking my Welsh bias aside ( I hate him) I think Welsh will start more games than not , when fit, and thats the key to me, McGregor would also fit under the Doughty/Shirley section

absolute no chance of bodey or shirls being left out of our best 22.

craigy loves both

douglas and maybe even knights may still have to bide their time, but i believe knights should certainly be in there THIS IS HIS YEAR TO MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF

is there enough room for sarge, mcgregor and bock in the same team???

i'd think not, bock is walk up CHF and that leaves u with a decision on one of the two battlers....i'll be stuffed if i can split them, both frustrate the life out of me.... i say kenny JUST

Not bad

Shirley in Knights spot, Doughty for Torney for me. Tippet wont get a call up this early

The 3-5 kids I would concentrate on this year are in order , Knights,Douglas, Griffin,Maric (both necessity) and Porplyzia. These should be looking to play 10games plus this year

The young fella will be safe as houses as long as Craigy has a hole in his arse

Vince played fantastically well. Very clean, regularly navigating past multiple dees, he's gotta be in our best 22 I'm afraid...just something about him, think he'd be a gamebreaker in a forward pocket for finals. When on the ground he found the ball quite a bit, class act in the making.

Laughable. There is no way he should be in the 22 as he simply doesn’t deserve to be in there. Knights, Douglas, even Pfeiffer have showed more during the pre-season and should be in front of him in the pecking order.

Bernie.....I think you're still a fair bit away from a regular spot

cheers

:)

You base that on what .... you haven't seen him play or train .....you've heard nothing about him in the media......so on the basis of abscence you don't rank him.

I'm with Fd88 in saying although this kid started PS of late beacuse of a knee, IMO he'll have a much better season than last year

Write him off at your peril ;)

I reckon you could add Pfeiffer to that list too PC. I have a feeling the way he attacks the contest would please Craigy no end. I also have a sneaking suspicion John Hinge may see some regular gametime this year. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and the kid has really bulked up. I reckon Craigy could be grooming either him or McIntyre for the Hart/Bassett type defender of the future.

Analyzing our list of players who weren't regulars last year ( 8 or less games ), I see the following happening, excluding rookies and further serious injury.

Because of age won't see much AFL gametime in 2007:

-Tippett
-Sellar
-Mackay
-Meesen

Must be given every opportunity to become starting 22 players in 2007:

-Knights.
-Douglas.
-Griffen or Maric or both. If not in the ruck, then Griffen as a premanent forward.
-Pfeiffer.
-Porp.

Probably won't play more than 6-8 games in 07:

-Gill
-Vince
-Hinge
-Jericho

I have left Bryce Campbell out as he is an unknown quantity. More than likely he will slot into the Gill list. I hope not, as I love the sounds of this kid.

Possibly. That then begs the question , once again, of who misses out?

Who are the weaker links in the starting 22 from last year. Like I said, they would be pretty unlucky but you have to bring the kids on at some stage.

If fit, the following would all be walk up starts:

Hudson
Roo
Goody
Edwards
McLeod
Mattner
Rutten
Bock
Stevens - I never thought I would say that. His 2006 improvement was phenomenal.
Johncock
Bassett
Reilly
Torney
Burton
Thompson
Van Berlo

Those most at risk but would be very unlucky to miss out:

Massie
Bode
Doughty
Welsh
Either McGregor or Perrie
Shirley

Starting an argument for the sake of it are we? ;)

Beats me how you can honestly believe that Vince has overtaken Knights, Douglas and Pfeiffer on the back of 1 trial game. At this stage Vince is nowhere near the Crows best 22 IMO.

And being realistic nether would Douglas or Pheffer. Both have very bright futures but as I type this nether player would be a certain walk up start round 1.

Vince would be in the same playing category as Douglas and Pheffer.

You say Vince has no chance but Pfeiffer does? It's only because he is from Norwood that you think he should get a game.

Yeah I've gotta say that of all the guys mentioned Pfeiffer has shown the least. He was long trumpeted as the first in line to grab a game last year of our youngsters and didn't even get close, undisciplined and such. Drummond, I know you love to see your Norwood guys do well, but I think that at this stage he doesn't give us as much as Knights or Douglas. Vince is more of a freaky forward, so I think he too takes priority over Pfeiffer, in terms of what he can offer to the scoreboard.

Although Pfieffer I agree is probably down the list ATS he has enormous talent and will DEFINATELY be a very good player.

ATS stage he has improved dramatically on his first season and is getting accustoned to the pace of the game ....in fact he has been "rushing" his play a little too much. He needs to settle and get a bit more composure in his play but expect him to get some games this year and ultimately be a very good player.

Good list. Personally i reckon Torney could be in the bottom group, with Welsh remaining in the top group (notwithstanding injury of course). But overall, this is an accurate assessment IMO. For all those who cannot bring themselves to consider the selectors dropping servicable players like Bode, Shirley, McGregor and Doughty, you will never find room for the youngsters you want to get game time (unless our injury plague gets worse).

I think there's a major disconnect between what the fans want and what they expect to happen in reality.

Shirley & Bode have few fans on BF, most of us would be happy to see them make way for the likes of Knights & Douglas.

However, the perception is that they have a major fan in the coach's box. Thus, we accept that the reality is that their positions are relatively safe unless they go through a major form slump.

Personally, I think Shirley's position in the team is justified. He's our #1 tagger (or run-with player if you prefer to be PC) who finished in the top 10 of the club B&F last year. Bode on the other hand is skating on much thinner ice, with several players watching for him to slip up.
