For overall ability and consistency RAIN GAUGE looks the best of the Aussie horses. He rates very highly on his 7th (beaten 2 lengths) in the Caulfield Cup. I've used this as his qualifying run in my assessment. But he is capable of further improvement going by his close 3rd in the weight-for-age Australia Cup in the autumn.

My 3rd rated horse, REQUIEM rates very highly on his last start win and his feather weight brings him right into it. But he doesn't have any other high rated performances as supporting evidence. So I regard RAIN GAUGE as the more reliable proposition.

I've decided that MEDIA PUZZLE is the most likely contender out of the visitors because he has the benefit of a recent run under Australian conditions. Normally I wouldn't be looking to the Geelong Cup as a guide ... but under the circumstances, I'd say his win was worth half a dozen track gallops. The fitness doubts surrounding VINNIE ROE could just be an Irish smokescreen to protect the price, but I'm taking them on face value.

DISTINCTLY SECRET has very high recent ratings and a very low weight here. The McKinnon run on Saturday was a corker. But the barrier is a problem ... and I'm not as confident about it getting the trip.
