As much as I admire his work ethic and determination, Ellard gets the chop when Curnow is ready to return.

At full fitness, Brock McLean is a very good footballer and is part of our best 22. He's shown he is too good for VFL and we now must give him every opportunity to work himself back into good form in the senior team.

Nothing is to be gained from McLean playing VFL football at this stage. Give him a really good run in the seniors to prove his worth. If he does, then that is fantastic and we'll be a better team for it. If he doesn't, and if he really struggles, then Ellard can come in for him.

Has Ellard not done the exact same
Too much weight is being put on McLean's past it would seem...

Ellard easily. He's younger and got more upside. The game is way too fast for McLean now. He's not getting the possessions he was getting at Melbourne because the game has got faster. He'll be a liability to the side if opponents continually run off him using their pace?

Ellard's Kicking undoes a lot of his hard work and is a liability at the moment, but agreed.

is an area that is improving
On Friday night sent that beautiful pass deep into the fwd area hitting a player dead set. Probably a fluke but a joy to watch

McLean has shown he is a fantastic footballer when fully fit.

The MC rate him highly, and rightly so. Given those facts, why wouldn't he be given every opportunity to get back to the form he has displayed in the past?

Well, he should be given the chance but not if it's at the expense of a younger player who's outperforming him.... Surely simple logic dictates that?

Your logic is sound, but what needs to be considered is what is best for the club not just for this week, or next week, but for the entire season.

Whilst the Curnow/Ellard combination may give us more than any combination including McLean right now (I'm not convinced that is the case, though), which combination will give us more when it matters most, that being in September?

I'm confident that a solid run in the seniors leading up to finals will do McLean a great deal of benefit, and it would be far more beneficial to him and to the club than more games at VFL level. If he hasn't worked his way into some really solid form by then, there's always Ellard who we can 'fall back on' as an option, and you know what you'll get from him.

It does, and I would certainly not be against Ellard being in the team come September.

However, I do firmly believe that McLean could offer us more if he is fully fit come that stage of the season.

That's it right there. Can he get himself fully fit and stay fully fit? Has struggled to do in recent years and he's proven to be a liability unless at 100%.

Accidentally voted for Ellard but at this stage I think McLean should go.

Very hard call to make, however I will trust the match committee to make the right call.

I don't think they will drop either.
With Laidler being injured they may decide to bring in Curnow and put Gibbs on the HBF to replace Laidler.
We still need someone on the HBF who can kick a ball. That just may have to be Gibbs whilst Laidler is out.
The way I see it they will bring in Warnock & Curnow to replace Laidler & Hampson.
If Russell doesn't come up then I think Tuohy may get a game.
Therefore the Back line could be:
FB; Duigan Jamison Gibbs
Tuohy Thornton Yarran
Not ideal for height but we've played short down there all year.
It's possible "Henderson" may also get a start at the expense of Joseph.
Therefore possible outs: Hampson, Laidler, Russell & Joseph
possible ins: Warnock, Tuohy, Curnow & Henderson

in modern day footy if you cant run youre a liability, mclean by his own admission on the abc this weekend said since his ankle op a few years ago he hasnt been able to run and he hasnt been the same since(would have been nice for him to tell the cfc b4 we gave up our 1st pick but thats what you get from arrogant people like him).he also said he was going to try and compensate with fast hands and a fast mind.thats laughable quick reflexes are something that you either have naturally or you dont, although you can hone them to an extent they actually get slower over time so ill be interested to see how he makes them quicker.he is clutching at straws and for all those watching his games with rose coloured glasses all the sugar coating in the world wont alter the fact that both his games have been underwhelming,i watched him closely the other night and he just cant get over the ground.and all this talk of inside work well i didnt see anything special, saw him outside a fair bit with his hand in the air calling for cheap ones.if you want to see inside work watch murph judd robbo and ellard

Do you ever post anything other than vitriole for McLean?

Or are you incapable of expanding your mind from that area of focus?

Hope you enjoy booing Henderson as early as this weekend. :thumbsu:

I'm tipping at least half the people who saw your lazy, unpunctuated, poorly formatted comment didn't read it. If you can't offer something better looking than that you may as well give it away altogether.

Right now i'd say McLean.

Either way, now is the perfect time for the match commitee to give Brock his best chance at proving his worth. That way, come finals time they have a complete understanding of what is available to them and they can go with what the matchups require.

In my opinion right now what McLean lacks in athleticism, he makes up for with better execution. I also think that while Ellard is a hard nut and doesnt give up, his bodysize and strength works against him in comparison to McLean.

In conclusion, Ellard for Essendon type teams, McLean for Geelong, StKilda or Sydney type teams.

I read the first sentence and it got too hard and skipped the rest. .. Blocks of text are terrible. .. I try to avoid them myself (not always successfully)

Yor post is lazy and it is a shame as your content raises some interesting points.
Off the playing field I have certainly seen Brock display an arrogant persona - strutting peacock is how somebody descibed him.
I do not mind that in a sportsman but if you strut you just have to deliver. We have all seen Brock has had the skills and as Diesel showed silky skills and lack of pace can co-exist. But Diesel was something special in every sense of the word.
Brock may still be able to contribute much but he is running out of lives. If you have a limited set of skills like say Ellard you must deliver those extremely well to offest your negatives. Tackling, leadership, negating etc are some of these. If you are in as a winner of the ball and you are not doing that you will not last
