Peter Daicos – a career review and opinion piece for those interested in a player I believe to this day is still underrated as a true great of the game and a once in a generation player.

Why did I post this you ask as there has surely been other posts…well for a start I have only been posting for a little while on Big Footy, but as someone who saw Peter Daicos play many times in the flesh I am still to this day a firm believer that he is the MOST UNDERRATED superstar of our game.

Just Consider…..

In 1981 in his 2nd full season as a 19 yr old he kicked 76 goals from a flank (includes 12 goals from 4 finals)

This included Bags of 6,6,6,7 in 4 of his first 5 games

Another bag of 9 goals soon followed in rd 10!

Just imagine a 2nd year player at 19 yrs old doing anything close to this today!

In 1982, age 20 he kicked 58 as a flanker cum centreman including an incredible 7 goals in one quarter v the Roos at Arden st!

I know some have kicked 7 in a quarter before but how many from the centre and how many haven’t been from a KPF?

He was cruelled by injuries in his peak during the mid 80’s and reinvented himself in 1988/1989 where he played exclusively as a centremen and racked up 479 and 456 possies in those years. As well as averaging a goal a game.

Then in 1990 as a 28 yr old he had his greatest year kicking an incredible 97 goals as a small forward. More than just a great number, it was the quality of the goals he kicked that I will always remember as he had to manufacture the large majority by creating space, maneuvering opponents, kicking from impossible angles and outside 50 using the torpedo on several occasions and taking several one handed marks holding off his opponent using his other arm as he didn’t have the bigger body of a key forward.

To this day I believe this achievement is still grossly underrated – especially when you consider a widely considered average team won the flag that year. THE REASON – DAICOS KICKING 97 GOALS!

He then followed up 1991 with a lazy 75 goals after the well documented premiership hangover. This season punctuated by an incredible 5 week winning sequence coinciding with a late season comeback in which he kicked 8,8,13,6,5

The 13 goals 1 behind against Brisbane the absolute highlight for the year (by the way I plan to put together a video of these 13 goals which I will post one day unless someone can beat me to it!) as I have on VHS but need to get in on DVD.

1992 produced a more modest 52 goals but included his incredible goal against Richmond which earned him the GOTY he so richly deserved in 1990 against West Coast in the qual final with the greatest goal I have ever seen! Not because of the kick alone but the passage of play and the tense stage of a big final.

Finally in his last year 1993 as a 32 yr old, he only played 5 games due to injury but even then gave us something special in rd 2 with a stunning 8 goal performance at Vic park where the great Gary Ablett kicked 7 goals in an amazing duel..

Throughout the 80’s and early 90’s there were two players called GOD and they were Ablett and Daicos.

They both did things that were not only unbelievable but they did them consistently which is why their fans adored them and other fans admired them.

Now whilst I maintain Ablett is the greatest player I have seen, I also maintain that Daicos is the best in one broad category that is often debated:

The most skillful player ever, Period!

His left and right foot was so good he barely missed a target ever!
He would kick goals from everywhere, with both feet, bananas/snaps and set shot kicking was as good as anyone.
He has a style of goal literally named after him which is the miracle goals kicked from the boundary which he literally did so often it became rudimentary.
He would baulk as a rule, not blessed with pace made this look even better as he would dummy players to create space and looked majestic doing it!
He has the best collection of torpedo punts by a player in the time I have watched footy (30 years).
What player have you known that brings the crowd to a frenzy everytime he marked outside 50? The cry for Torp! Torp! was a ritual at pies game and did he deliver!!

Those that will question this are either too young to have seen Daicos, are blinded by Collingwood hatred or simply just didn’t get the chance to see enough of him due to the lack of TV coverage in those years compared to the last 20 years.

And before you say I'm biased, are Geelong fans biased when they say Ablett was the greatest...no. Again, Daicos is not the greatest player but the player with the greatest overall skills that has produced a career so unique and influential that surely must rank him higher than many of the media or so called experts have placed him.

Thanks for reading!

I think Daicos' legacy will always be that only a select few players in the history of our game are "copied" or were trendsetters that basically revolutionized the game.

Yes, other players before him could kick the ball end on end through for a goal, but not with the accuracy and deliberate action that Daicos could.

He goes down for mine as the most influential Collingwood player in the history of Australian Rules, something that should never be forgotten.

I still remember that goal of the year in 92 against the Tigers, just after half time, right in front of the social club, was the single most amazing goal I have ever seen.

The first goal in the 1990 GF is also so under rated in both it's importance and it's brilliance. Under pressure, on the boundary, 45 metres out, and the ball split the middle.

A truly great player, and one whose deeds should never be forgotten by those who support the black and white.

A once in a generation player you say, I say there never was, and never will be another Peter Daicos, no matter what the comparison to modern day or past players.

Great thread.:thumbsu::D

post of the year... brilliant.. we think alike regarding the marvel and ablett..

i agree 100% with everying you write..

cheers spartan...glad you enjoyed it!

always followed him closely probably started from the fact I lived across the road from his house about 5-6 houses away until I was 8 years old and then played for Preston RSL also for a few years...no joke!

Great post Magicpants from another who had the pleasure to witness Daic's greatness.
If only, if only....they could make another like him.:thumbsu:

i watched him as youngster and tried to emulate his every feat - lol epic fail on my behalf . my favourite footballer ever... wish i lived near him back in the day!

Can't agree more. It's the fact that he revolutionised the position of small forward that really sets him apart. Mattys right in saying he was a trendsetter. I didn't get to see enough of him to truly appreciate him because I was a bit too young but I used to watch old tapes of him and my old man used always reinforce the legend. I used to run around in the back yard practicing impossible shots on goal just like Daics did, he is the sort of player that inspires kids and adults alike I think. My old man always bemoans the fact he didn't make the Team of the Century as a forward pocket because he thought no-one played that position better than Daics.

My favourite player of all time. :thumbsu:
I remember his first game.
Was at the game when he did his knee. :(
Great memories in the 80's.
Unfortunately I spent 7 years o/seas in different periods b/w 1988 - 96.
Missed that part of his career.
However, for pure genius - no one beats Daicos.
I joked with him at Collingwood family day to make a come back.
He said he would - if I can arrange it.
We should go and have a word with Malthouse. :D

Thanks for post, as a 21 year old I was 4 when he retired and sadly don't remember anything of his playing days.

I do, however, remember the praise he recieved (whether it be my Dad saying "Daicos was the most skilled player I've ever watched" or my Uncle "he was freakishly good") and still does by the Collingwood faithful.

But never quite heard about his career in a way you put it.

I try to find clips on youtube of his career but clearly they do not do him full justice.
Thanks for the insight and re-igniting some love for such a great player.

:thumbsu:

If he didn't wear vertical black & white stripes, he would have been in the Toc.

Feel grateful that I saw Daicos at his best.

90 QF. Best goal & crowd reaction I've ever witnessed (superior to Rocca 02 PF)
84 EF - Kicked 7 goals on Bruce Doull.
91 V St. Kilda/VFL Park
93 V Geelong - his last act.

There was a batch of games in 91' where he kicked 40 goals in 5 games.

Jeez I'm starting to feel old now. While he may be generally under-rated by the public, I don't think the same is true on this board where there is a lot of love for him. I think quite a few of us on here are of the vintage where we grew up watching the great man in full display.

He was, and remains, the only player that I ever idolized. Such a freak. The only sporting parallel I can think of was Warnie when he broke on to the scene. The things he did, people had never seen before and it seemed like pure magic. Late in his career, opposition fans still argued that he was just lucky. They couldn't comprehend that his skill level was such that he could regularly kick goals from "impossible" angles.

I've recently watched a few old games again and the thing that stood out was his economy of effort. Unlike today's small forwards, the defensive aspects of his game (pressuring, chasing, tackling) were not his strong points, but back then coaches didn't demand it from forwards. But as soon as there was even a small opportunity, bang. With his deft touch to control the ball, ability to find space in a crowd, kicking skill on both sides, from all angles and anywhere within 60 m, he regularly turned nothing into a goal. Ahhh Daics. I'd love to have a beer with the great man one day just to let him know how much joy he brought me as a kid.

Loved the Macendonion Marvel
yep as a kid I ran around the backyard pretending to be him and always kicking the freakish snap with seconds to go LOL
I was lucky enough to see maybe 200 of his 250 games.
Amazing that he started as a centreman and ended up as one of the games best forward ala Ablett started as a wingman to be one of the best FF.
His goal against Geelong at waverly deep in pocket main scoreboard end pissing down with rain, still sends chills down my spine.
Even Geelong fans applauded that effort.
And who can forget 1990 QF from the boundry when we needed a goal desperatley.
Geez the list goes on and on.
Daics did that week in week out back then when noone else tried it
today everybody does those goals because they practice it, but still feel pride when the commentators credit Daics for that.
Leon Neon now carries the mantle for me, but the Legend of the great one will always be there.:thumbsu:

I used to kick a rolled up pair of socks around the house and whenever I 'slotted' one through a doorway I'd call out "Daicos!". Can't imagine ever idolizing another player as much. Bucks was close but there will never be another Daicos.

Love the post but I don't really understand it because I've never met anyone who thought he was average. I don't think anyone would under rate him, Collingwood supporter or not. Heck even today if a player kicks a goal tight on the boundary line and it dribbles along the ground it's quite often referred to as a "Daicos type goal". Pretty high praise to have a kicking style etched into the footy vernacular. :thumbsu:

GO PIES!

Was just old enough to see him in his latter years and he was my fav as a kid just starting to watch the footy.
Just a freak around the goals and was always one of the players kids would try & emulate at school.

Great OP!!!

Agree with nearly every word spoken!

I'm one of the over 40 posters here and was lucky enough to see most of his 250 games. The thing the younger posters here need to bare in mind when searching for his highlights on youtube is that the majority of games he played in were not televised so much of what he did is not recorded.

There is one excellent highlight package floating around that has been linked here before, that has most of the good quality highlights on it.

He is certainly the most freakishly skilled player I have ever seen play the game. In fact, he was so skilled (particularly around goals) that I can almost say there is daylight to the next player. As said above, he did amazing things consistently that no-one had ever done before, particularly his goal shooting from tight angles and his ability to dribble the ball through. He undertood the shape of our ball better than anyone.

People came to the footy just to see him play and the gasps from the crowd "Daicos" every time he was anywhere near it made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Time and time again he delivered the impossible and in big games too.

As is touched upon above he was devasted by a string of serious injuries through the mid 1980's including several knee ops (including a reco), stress fractures in his feet etc. He missed a lot of games in that period (and played a lot injured) so his statistical record could even be a lot better.

It is a crime that he is not in the forward pocket in the AFL's team of the century. It's hard to imagine who could have played that position better.

People here prattle on about the likes of Davis, Didak etc (and StKilda knobs about Milne) but the reality is that none of them were/are fit to lick the boots of the Macedonian Marvel. He was simply so much better than any of them that any comparison is utterly ridiculous.

Btw, I've met him several times and he is a super bloke and extremely humble.

Superstar!!!!

Man love still growing with every watch.

I dont think I ever maintained that he was considered average - what I was attempting to convey is he is still - in my opinion - not recognised as one of the all time greats/superstars like ablett and so on. It still irks me that comparisons are made with players like milne, didak (luv him but he aint Daicos) jarman etc

This is generally evident in many comparison discussions on big footy, radio etc and in all time top player lists (from memory he may have been around 50 give or take..but not sure) and of course as many have mentioned no AFL team of the century.

Many who make these comparison are too young to have either seen Daicos play, or only saw his last few years, still fantastic mind you, hobbled by knee injuries.

There a many players I never saw play, but for grainy film or archival footage who footy devotees older than me would wax lyrical over for many an hour and rightly so.

Daicos, for my generation was the ultimate player because he alone among the uber skilled, brave, courageous and downright freakish, delivered on all those attributes the most consistently and singularly when it counted THE most.

In the 1990 Grand Final.

It is for another player to become the player of this generation as far as Pies supporters go, but Daicos will always be as stated in the OP "A Once in a Generation Player."

Peter Daicos......Absolute superstar ! A once in a lifetime freak of the game.Definately a big game player who nearly always delivered.Got us going in the 1990 grand final.Still remember it.

We need him down at the club desperately to teach a few blokes the art of improving our kicking skills.

We should get him these days he ain't doing much.

Any time I'd be at my best mate's house and we watched the pies get beaten over the years, we would always end up putting on my grainy old VHS of "Daicos hot shot's" and end up roaring loons by the end of it.

Always has & always will be my favourite player. Just wish i could update to dvd.
