And what's that supposed to mean?
You're a clever chap I'm sure you can work it out.

Yep. That's what the London Declaration of 1949 said, when the modern Commonwealth of Nations was established.,

That's not what the Commonwealth Games is about. If you think it is, then you are mistaken or just ignorant.

Yeah thanks.

I'm well aware of what the British Empire did and didn't do. I've only been teaching it for the last 30 odd years.
What can I say I don't subscribe to British propaganda

You know where they invaded countries, stole their wealth and murdered a lot of the original inhabitants of those places for not being British.
If the British hadn't "invaded" Australia, what would we be today? A Japanese outpost? An undeveloped, third world wasteland?

i can see a ron desantis styled rewriting of australian history telling us first nations should be thankful .... what a world we live in

My thoughts exactly whenever I see you defending the monarchy.

Well get that button ready because I'll be continuing to argue in favour of a constitutional monarchy.

And I'll be continuing to teach the rise and fall of the British Empire. In fact I'm currently contributing to a text book for senior students on that very subject.

Australia would have become French.

It would probably have been split between a number of countries. It's a big place, and few European powers would have been able to secure it all.

See the "scramble for Africa" for an example of how it would have gone down.

Unlike Africa, only France and England wanted to claim Australia. The Dutch and Portuguese knew Australia was there but they had other priorities.

Valid question. Until Dan cancelled the 2026 Games you would not have thought support for the Commonwealth Games went down party lines, but here we are, and we have posters applauding the demise of what is the world’s second largest multi-sports event, and the fourth most watched global broadcast sports event, featuring athletes from 71 nations and territories.

What do you mean, the second largest multi-sports event?

Where does it say it's ranked as the fourth most watched sports event? You're not lying or misleading again, are you, Stew, like you did with the Armstrong Creek pool?

FMD!! Exactly what I said. Quarntine-boy What don't you understand about what I posted? I mean, I couldn't have been clearer???

Why do you disagree with something someone posts before you bother fact checking? And if you disagree with the source prove it wrong

Are you being deliberately obtuse again?

Honest question - what is bad about the Commonwealth Games?

Is it merely the cost?

Is it merely celebrating anything to do with the British Empire?

I don't think they are a big deal, and the cost makes it very hard to excuse the expense, but in end it's a multi-sport event where a number of people who don't get to the Olympics are able to compete and get a lot out of doing so.

I am asking how is it bad, not how is it "meh".
It like the Olympics simply don't stack up cost wise.

Countries spend billions on infrastructure and stadia for a two week event.

These things become money sinks very quickly.

According to these the Commenwealth Games don't rank in the top 15:

Although numbers are unreliable, it is generally accepted that the most widely watched events worldwide are international sporting events such as the Summer Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup and Formula One,[2] with annual events such as the Super Bowl in the U.S., and the UEFA Champions League finals in Europe picking up large regional audiences.

This is the only link that has the Commenwealth Games as top 20 for viewership. 4th is way off.

And I'm not sure why you're getting heated again, calm down.

Understanding anything is not an endorsement of the subject matter.

Why? Alberta has merely pulled out of submitting a bid. Something Dan could have done...

Sure.

But in the end he has saved Victorians from a financial disaster.

And in doing so has pulled back the magic veil on the fraud that is the idea that the Commonwealth Games as an economic boon for potential host cities - resulting in Canada stepping back from even submitting a bid. The citizens of Alberta have likewise dodged a bullet.

The Commonwealth Games (previously known as the British Empire Games) ending as an event so soon after the passing of the British Queen under whose reign it reached its maximum success and popularity is a fitting congruence.

But unlike QEII, few (ageing puce faced imperialists aside), will mourn its passing.

You could see it as a bit of a test of the new bloke's commitment to the Commonwealth. It's hard to imagine his mum letting this happen.
I've got an idea.

Given that the so-called Commonwealth Games have only been held twice outside of the rich countries of the UK, Australia, Canada and NZ, in the past 50 years, how about he put his hand in his pocket to assist one of the less wealthy Commonwealth nations host the games. I mean, he has 54 countries in his empire to choose from.

You know- make it really about the Commonwealth. That's the point isn't it?
