Daniel Bell possibly headed to SA club

Why do people write players after one poor season ???

It's not that I don't rate him, it's just that he's not a necessity and hence is not going to be worth trading anything obscene for.

Like I said before something along the lines of McGregor or Jericho I wouldn't mind parting with, or as Macca23 said Campbell, possibly someone like Gallman or a 4th round draft pick.

I however, am not prepared to throw anything higher than that for a player who is not going to add sufficiently to the quality of our squad.

Adelaide could possibly be interested in Bell as a younger version of Shirley for the future. My memories of Bell's best games are when he has played as run with player.

However, he's not worth a lot in this draft. He's in a similar boat to Thomson from Port IMO and they might well do a straight swap. .

Played mainly off HB and has a brilliant kick on him .....worth more than your crediting him with

Was almost a Melbourne untouchable a couple of seasons back ....and he's not that Old I think?

That about says it all.

I agree other than the players you mentioned ...we don't have players that Melb want that we don't

But he really is a quality player ......we had similar discussions when recruiting Scott Stevens where many basically said that our third round draft pick trade was one of the worse in the clubs history.

You don't play as well as he has over a few seasons and then write the guy off after one bad season .....

You may well be right about his ability WW.

But this is not the draft to be generous.

It's a draft where nobody will part with their first-rounder, so the value of players drops back at least one round.

Wait until trade week. You'll see pretty good players go for very average draft picks.

If we are to trade for players, that has to be our philosophy too.

Bargains only thankyou. :)

Think your right about the trade value of players ....but I can't see him being parted with for a fourth rounder ...more likely a third rounder

Only problem with the Crows is it's easier to get back to Melbourne as a Crow than it is to get from Melb to the Crows.

Your right though ....there will be some bargains traded this year ....although I suspect the qty of trades will continue to be minimal ......clubs don't like win/win trades ...and that's what kills most trades ;)

Bell would not be on my target, we have similar types of players

Pass GO - Go directly to Port Power :D

Clearly yu don't like the idea. Thats fine & your opinion, but to think that Bell is worth McGregor or Jericho proves that you have no idea about football.

I didn't say that the trade would be Bell for either of Otten, Mackay or Douglas. It was my suggestion in the event that Bell wanted to be traded back to SA (Crows) that we would want someone of there age and ability in return. Bell was very good in 2007 but had a bad year this year. I hope we keep him for at least another year, but the above players are the ones that I would be interested in playing for Melbourne should a trade occur between the two teams.

Who knows perhaps we will rip you guys off - ala Scott Thompson;)

You are the one that has know idea about football thinking that you would trade Bell for any of the players you mentioned, so take your ball and p off.

Thread created by Bring-Back-Powell in AFL Draft & Trading:

The SA native, former pick 15 could be on his way back home if Adelaide or Port Adelaide can negotiate a trade with Melbourne.

It's understood Adelaide have expressed interest in Bell the last 2 years - particularly at the end of 2007 when the small defender had his career best season. The Demons may be willing to trade Bell to either of the SA clubs on the back of an average year from the 63 gamer who debuted in 2004 against St Kilda at the MCG.
------------------------------------

I would consider a third round draft pick adequate compensation for Daniel Bell. A guy that had a down season, but once played the most perfect defensive job last year on Scott Welsh that he polled 3 brownlow votes in that game. He was Melbourne's best defender in 2007.

Would Adelaide or Port fans be interested in luring Bell back home?

My first preference is for Bell to be given at least one more year but if a trade with a SA club needs to looked at I would suggest the following:

We don't want McGregor, Jericho or the like.
Has to be a young player. No older than 22.

If it was Adelaide it would need to be someone like Douglas, Mackay, Otten etc.

If it was Port it would need to be someone like Thomson, Farmer etc.

All of the players listed above are from Victoria except for Thomson, so would perhaps be interested in returning home. Admittedly I don't know a lot about Mackay & Otten but they are both relatively young and taken with a 2nd or 3rd round pick in recent drafts.

Any thoughts?
Man you're selling yourself a bit short.
I would have gone for Farmer plus pick 4 from Port. :)

As stated, dougie, otten, mackay will all be untouchable in this draft. (Unless franklin is on the table).

Bell though, I rate him, I expect the club would too. I can't think of a suitable trade. We won't give up 1st/2nd rnd draft pics for him. Unless he forces Melbourne's hand (and it sounds like he wants to stay in melb...) I can't see a deal occurring.

Unless something really bizzare like a 3 way warnock->griffin->bell+more trade occurs.

So, a mid-range player at a poor club and he doesn't want to come here anyway. I can see why we were so keen on him.
I think Daniel Bell is worth asking about. The club aren't to know that he has no interest in returning to SA.

How about Reilly for Bell + their 3rd rounder?

In recent years we have lost Begley, Hart, Mattner, Torney and Bassett so our mid sized defender stocks are pretty thin especially with Massie no certainty to be retained. If Massie goes, we pretty much only have the untried Kite.

way have too many similar players in the side and our weakness is up the other end of the field.
Lets go after a natural forward or attacking midfielder.

No-one is untouchable if the deal is right. Would you trade any of those guys for Didak? Geez, I would.

And Bell is a quality player. Sometimes it is easier to play better in a good team than a poor one. I wouldn't trade any of those players for Bell straight up - but Melbourne have plenty of draft picks, and are in front of us each round....

I think it would be very unlikely, especailly if he doesn't want to leave Melbourne, but to say you wouldn't ever do the deal without seeing it first

Ummm yeah, awesome proposal.

The Crows have previously liked Daniel Bell, so who knows, maybe they could still be keen.

You guys may try and cash in on Nick Gill?

A club needing a 193cm forward could pay over the odds for him, say the Demons, maybe the Crows could get Bell plus a pick for Gill?

Just a suggestion

It looks like its pretty much 50/50 interest from the crows supporters on here. It also seems that you guys don't want to give up any of the young talent that I mentioned, which is also fair enough.

I don't think it would be reasonable as a Melbourne supporter for us to except a 3rd round selection or higher & at the same time I recognise that Bell isn't worth a 1st round pick either. If it wasn't a direct swap of players & with Melbourne receiving a young player no older than 22 then I think it would need to be a 2nd round pick. (Bell will be 22 or 23 at beginning of next season) That said, this is supposed to be a deep draft so don't know if that will happen either.

As for all you crows supporters who actually think I referring to Melbourne ripping you guys off in the Scott Thompson deal you must have rocks in your head. We were the ones ripped badly in that deal & still suffering from it with Brent "blast away " Maloney.

We didn't give you Brent Maloney, we gave you what was it pick 14, you guys on traded it for Maloney, your beef should be with Geelong. Although, having said that, we still did pretty well there.:D
