I'll say it now - he has been disappointing so far in his 3 games - still early though.

with that said - i believe a major part of the problem is that he is becoming disillusioned with the ruck contest - he's given away 9 free kicks so far this year - the most of any player in the competition (granted most teams still yet to play their third game) - and the vast majority of these have been extremely soft ruck infringements.

Last night was ridiculous - seemed that when he receives contact in the ruck it was given the all clear, but if he reciprocates then it is a free kick against him.

As a result when he is going up for the ruck he seems to be distracted with trying to make sure he gets the contact right (as every ruckman seems to be playing into him)

We should start for the time being using fraser as the 3rd man up - this will prevent their opposition ruckman from trying to man handle jolly as it would just mean an easy tapout for fraser.

apart from that, i have been disappointed with jolly's presence and endeavour. he is a ruckman so nobody is expecting him to run down speedy midfielders, but too many times last night i saw him just lingering while an opponent would be running away/past him. Needs to at least chase to put on the perceived pressure.

Our ruck situation is not working right now and something needs to be done.

Ya I agree, he certainly seems unsure with the free kick situations.

Has been a major disappointment for me so far this year. Last night was a slight improvement, the first 2 weeks against Hudson/Jamar (2 average players) was woeful.

The Jolly/Fraser combo is certainly not working, pray1 the Jolly/Wood combo does.

Yeah me too. I'm concerned we overpaid and that filling the ruck slot has become almost an end in itself.

It would have eased my mind significantly if in the third quarter last night Jolly found his way to 30m out dead in front and taken a grab and converted, Gardiner managed to do this.

I like the third man up idea but I'd go for Maxwell or his ilk, 2 big men on the ball is one too many

Mabey to club should bring some upmpires down to work with him this week, to try and make it clear for him what he can and cannot do in a contest. Might be worth sending a please explain to the AFL over some of the ruck free kick decsions, Jolly needs some clearification. But I agree some of the decsions paied against him are really really strange and inconsistant, its a ruck contest if both guys have their arms wrapped around each other does jolly always get it paied against him???

He's been poor.

However we've been complaining for years that we haven't had a genuine ruckman, so I can't blame the club for doing something to rectify the situation. I'd be more upset if they continued to ignore it. You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.

at this rate... it's anyone's guess as to who our No.1 ruck will be by the end of the year...

Jolly?
Fraser again?
Wood improving?
or even SHAE

Was better last night then the first 2 rounds, 1 of the free kicks last night seemed pretty soft but I thought we got the better of it overall so not going to complain. He definitely needs some clarification though and he should probably try and hold the front spot in boundary throw ins better because ATM he is playing from behind and working his way to the front illegally.

Hi guys,
2nd post but have been reading for a while.

I'm worried about his fitness. He is quite a small ruckman (195 cm?). He can be a machine in hit outs, but at the moment he looks like he cant be bothered jumping, and looks a tad lazy around the ground - ala mitch clark.
He'll come good, we've seen the worst of him, he is on the up

Jolly will not have the same impact at Collingwood as often as what he had at Sydney.
The size of the SCG allowed him to get to contests a lot quicker and not get lost in the play as often as he has now.

Sydneys stoppage style of game also suits ruckmen as they are essentially involve in a lot more of the play than at most other clubs.

Darren will really need to work a lot harder than even he probably thought at Collingwood and last night he was better than the first two games but still not good enough really.

On a side note it is no coincience that Darren Jolly, Jason Ball, and now Mark Seaby all improved out of sight after re locating to Sydney.

Listed at 200cm (oh, and welcome! :))

I wasn't expecting Jolly to be as prolific in the hit-outs as he was at Sydney, but he does have to win his position, especially in the actual ruck contests. Right now, he's 0-and-3, and needs to improve quickly.

That said, he hasn't exactly been going up against duds. If he can't have a significant impact against Hawthorn, then some qns really need to be asked.

ahh ok, sorry bout that thought he was 195. I have faith in him, more so than I ever did with Fraser. He just doesnt look match fit yet for the MCG, even though he had a whole pre season. Not to mention how hard it must be on the knees of a 106kg man on the ES ground, who isnt used to it (Hudson/King/Gardiner).

im shattered about jolly thought he would of had a ripper against the st kilda ruckman..

has been beaten by hudson jamar and now gardner. He's a real worry. A sydney supporter i know said wait until the wet weather starts and he will dominate. I do agree he doesn't look 100 per cent fit. cardio vascular wise.

I would also expect him to dominate the Hawks, they would have close to the worst rucking situation in the league.
He does better than Fraser anyway so at least its an upgrade, expect more from him though as the season goes on.

Sydney's gameplan flattered him.
He has always given away stupid free kicks - that much I remember. He is obsessed with pushing the player.
Still, better then nothing.

We have been waiting about 15 years!!!!!!!

I think it's clear Jolly should be the second ruckman and made to earn his right to be number 1. Right now we miss Fraser's link play through the middle. One thing very noticeable about Josh, he looks inside when he has possession (the only fluent goal we actually managed to kick) and he freaking can get about 3 times the ball Jolly can.
Jolly may be OK for tapping (when he doesn't give away frees), but Fraser's run through the middle is far more valuable for us at the moment. Jolly's static gameplay does not help us break through the zone especially giving away s**t frees even after been warned the umpire when we're in attacking positions.

*And don't get me started on Leigh Brown's frees that resulted in 2 very crucial goals

Darren Jolly, Disappointing!

thought this guy was the best ruckman or at least one of, but in the first 3 games has shown nothing! and he looks slow and dumb!

will this guy come good, or did we do a carlton and waste a first round draft pick?

lookin forward to seeing wood back in the team

He's had 3 games to fit into a side which plays much differently than the side he's been used to on much larger grounds.
For what it's worth he's had on e"bad" game, against Jamar, and even then then it's generally agreed this was Jamars best game for the Dee's.

He'll gel in time.

Fraser as the number one ruckman doesn't work, we have had years that demonstrate this point. He really should consider himself lucky to be in the side because he doesn't offer much up forward.

So it turns out he is injuried. was seens going on for scans on something when riewoldt was getting his.
His elbow was strapped?
