I think the article tells us more about the author than it does Warner. The author sounds a bit soft for competitive cricket. Should spend his time concentrating on his game than worrying what people are saying to him.
Half his piece is tongue in cheek. When you’re talking about ‘being alphad’ during a handshake you know it’s not supposed to be winning a Pulitzer.
When I had to report on games I played, I deliberately talked down anything of note that I ever did - ‘scratched and edged his way to 70’ ‘managed to make 43 despite being made look foolish by most of the opposition attack’ etc. it didn’t make me too soft for competition.
I just didn’t want to talk myself up and make a bigger target of myself than already necessary.
