I think the article tells us more about the author than it does Warner. The author sounds a bit soft for competitive cricket. Should spend his time concentrating on his game than worrying what people are saying to him.

Half his piece is tongue in cheek. When you’re talking about ‘being alphad’ during a handshake you know it’s not supposed to be winning a Pulitzer.

When I had to report on games I played, I deliberately talked down anything of note that I ever did - ‘scratched and edged his way to 70’ ‘managed to make 43 despite being made look foolish by most of the opposition attack’ etc. it didn’t make me too soft for competition.

I just didn’t want to talk myself up and make a bigger target of myself than already necessary.

There was initially some confusion because once a batsman has left the field of play, they are unable to return to the crease - unless they are returning after having retired hurt. However, news.com.au understands Western Suburbs players allowed Warner to return because they did not want him to be dismissed in such a fashion.

Knew this would happen at some point. There's no way he can win in a sledge exchange either because even if he smashes a ton or hits someone with a great comeback they will just fire back with "Wow, you're pretty good. Why aren't you playing in the national side?"

Yeah I agree with this. My initial reaction is that Warner is a sook that can dish it out, but can't take it when it's dished back. But we really need to know what was said before saying too much. If it was something that was clearly over the line, then my opinion may well be that Warner acted admirably by not retaliating.

I honestly can't understand all the hatred and anger directed towards Warner. He's not the first campaigner to play for Australia. He's not the biggest campaigner to play for Australia and he won't be the last campaigner to play for Australia.

Have a like for the fine use of 'campaigner' as a rhetorical device.

I think it went in the scorebook as "Retired - feelings hurt" meaning he was allowed to return.

At least this time he didn't just go to the races because his team was fielding. Since becoming a celebrity, he doesn't have a great record in his rare club appearances.
