Some great in depth analysis provided here :thumbsu: Nicoski and Dick out is a little harsh but from a list management view logical. Id imagine we will keep one or both on though going by what they usually do. I think Ash Smith is a trade option. Hasn't come one like we hoped but offers something. A club like Melbourne would take him and we will pick up a nice pick. Got plenty of half back options can afford to lose him.

This is a fair point, but to be honest Smith is very close to overtaking Butler in my opinion. Offers great drive and flexibility from half back.

Doubt Freeman will be available at our 2nd pick, maybe if we can get saints 2nd pick. Still not sure he will be there. Same goes for Acres.

I would not mind using our 2nd pick on Robertson, he might not be available come pick 40(ish).

If we got one of Botempelli or Sheed, and then one of Acres or Freeman and topped up with Robertson that would be an excellent result imo. We could probably use our 3rd rounder on a big man if anyone is available.

Loo on talent you'd like to pick up, but I don't think he will get picked up.

I agree with that. I think the coaching staff rate Butlers composure and awareness in the contest. Other than that I cant see how he is above a couple of the others

He can't spoil overhead either, it always seems that he either gets beaten to the contest and can't reach. Then if he does get it his disposal is rubbish. Maybe he can't see the ball because his fringe is in the way.
What? He has played as a second or third tall on occaision and has done well, especially at a game at Docklands against Essendon a couple of years back (maybe playing on Crameri). Towelled him up.

I don't think anyone's doubting that he had a breakout year a couple of years back. The anger on this board towards him is because he's done f-all since and seems to be a shadow of the player who we all saw a couple of years back.

me too. Agree with a lot of the analysis. However I would like to play some of the fringe players for as many games as possible this year so that we can be more certain of who to keep for 2014.
EG play Morton until we have enough info to decide - his contract ends at end of this season so it's not a question of just keep him, we would have to offer him a new contract. Personally I would let him go, but open to play him and have him prove me wrong.
Same really with Dick, Bennell and Newman. The rest are as you suggest. Agree also with your targets

We can't simply just play Newman to see what he's got. He just walked out on a game over the weekend - he won't be playing footy for West Coast this season.

he has a negative perception, he is no way near as bad as people on here claim.
The problem isn't neccessarily that he's bad but rather that he's not good.

He seems to do the bare minimum picking up cheap possessions that are rarely beneficial to the team. How often do you hear yourself say "great work Smith"? I don't recall ever saying it - certainly not this season.

Then he shouldn't play for WCE period.
My option was to give the lad a chance to focus on something other than his problems - get into the 1's and show us you want this. If not, there's not enough evidence on the table IMO to give him another contract.

Not sure if Newman is an otherwise good young kid who's made a couple of really bad mistakes or if his publicised problems (assault charges, low fitness and walking out on his team mid game) are the signs of someone with substantial issues.

If it's the former he's probably worth persevering with on a one year contract as the guy does have genuine football talent and he's likely to better than someone we pick up with selection number 60+ in the draft.

If it's the latter it's probably time to cut our losses and move him on preferably as a trade or pick upgrade although his value would be low.

With Morton... I would be more interested in how hard he went on the training track this year than actual AFL performance..

If he showed a willingness to improve and a desire for the contest each session you would certainly have something to work with after another pre-season. If he starts getting up there with Masten and Dalziell for time trials... look out!

I'm inclined to think it's a waste of time. Should divide all those guys that are are zero chance of being with us in 2015. The half who can contribute the most in 2014 get a contract.

Embley - shouldn't play on. To do so would be selfish.
A.Selwood - his game has broken down. Can't play effectively at AFL level.
Nicoski - body is shot.
Morton - bigger version of Dalz.
Dick - body is shot.
______________
Dalziell - can run, can't do much else.
Hams - not a forward.
Kerr - body is shot.
Cox - fading fast.
Glass - playing great football but won't be around.

Players with genuine concerns.

Brown - seeking a trade?
Newman - GBH and associated problems.
Sheppard - has talent but will he become a consistent AFL player?
Smith - same as Sheppard.
Brennan - at the moment he's pretty poor. Wins friends because of his heart.
Butler - soft tissue problems combined with middling talent.
Wilson - poor speed and endurance. Role?
McGinnity - a very average footballer.
Colledge - soft tissue, AFL role?
