I don't know enough about either the Newman situation or the Garlett situation to know what the risk/reward scenario is. I'm just speculating that Murray's problems may scare the club off taking a punt on another question mark in Garlett.

I hope it doesn't, I'd love for Garlett to be a third rounder for us. ;)

You'd think it'd definitely scare us off taking him in the first two rounds. Happy to pick him up as a late rounder, but you'd think another side would have him by then

I don't think he'll go before the third round.

The problem with that is Cox, Kerr, Glass (2nd half of the season imo), Embley, Butler and A Selwood are dropping off fairly quickly. Another pre season into them and they'll be contributing even less than this year imo.

I think our young mids need another 2 years before they can bridge the gap that will be left by the retirements and lessening contribution from our older players. That, and we have some holes to fill that may become even more apparent when we can no longer carry our older players ie 2nd ruckman, can Lycett lift his game? 2nd/3rd back, can Brown and Schoefield take up the slack once Glass retires or is no longer best 22? Can Brennan, Wilson, Carter and Smith replace Butler, A Selwood and possibly Waters if he cant stay fit

Glass, Cox and Kerr are the keys for me, not so much Embley, Butler and Selwood (Selwood and possibly Butler have replacements that have already comfortably exceeded them imo).

Glass and Cox started the season very well but are carrying injuries, so if we manage them through the rest of the year and with a lighter pre-season they will still be valuable. Kerr is damaged goods but as someone said we could look at playing him as a HFF with bursts through the middle. His best is still very good and if nothing else he will draw the tag away from someone like Shuey.

I think the gap between our 'next generation' in the midfield in Shuey, Scooter and Masten (and Wellingham) isn't that far off from bridging the gap from our older mids like Kerr and Embley. Players like Gaff and Sheppard might take that extra couple of years but they will continue to improve into next year (hopefully).

I still think the missing piece of our puzzle in line breaking ability and pace. Its no secret I'm a big fan of Yarran (I don't think he's the best option or the answer to all our problems but is potentially gettable) and I think someone like that would immediately add to the team and be around after the mini rebuild post Cox/Kerr/Glass.

3 small fwd with good pace and finishing skills can also go up the ground
4 inside mid with height and big body
5 best available mature age KPD

Replace 3 with 4.

Should be able to get a good midget scrawny crumber in the very late rounds if we pulled our finger out for once rather than going for that guy from Geelong (can't even remember his name, that's how insignificant he was) or undersized midfielders like Hams and Neates.

Every year a new tiny excitement machine makes an impact here and there. Rarely they're game changers, but we don't need a small forward to be a game changer...

If we activate our 3rd round comp pick and somehow upgrade it using smith we could almost get
1 sheed 2 acres 3 garlett 4 cripps 5 best available KPD

will waterman be our first pick next year?

Probably too early to say. I have seen some say he could be top 10 next year, but we are a long way out. Hopefully he can dominate the remaining colts season and get some league time next year.

I can't help but think Murray's predicament may see us overlook Garlett in the draft.

I would hope the club isnt that stupid to not draft him based on a previous experience with a completely different person.

Besides, you would think they now have a years worth of data from coaches and players at the Swans to make a decision?

Who knows.

But looking at the WA group there is a lot of players in the 175cm - 182cm bracket and a bit of strength in 190cm + players. So id take some bigger bodied midfielders if possible now.

Seems like a plan. Not a W A boy I know but I would really like us to get Marcus Bontempelli in the next draft. He has height and pace from what I have seen and seems to read the game well.

Has good skills too and lovely hands. Think he has massive potential.
Would be very happy pick him up.

Really hope we get Acres with our second pick, nice height. Not confident he will be available though.

I like Sheed, but this is who i reckon we should be drafting with our first pick...

Doesn't it depend on the bidding system somewhat ? Could we be forced to take him in the first round because of a bid from another club ?

That's right. I'm hoping our second rounder will be all it takes though...

What do people think of Tom Ledgar from the Saints? I know he is small ( 1.78m) and 78kg but he isn't getting many games for Saints and think he would come real cheap.

Not interested in any more undersized midfielders.

Yeah, someone can correct me if I'm off base here but I think Ledger is one of those guys who's excellent inside and racks up the touches, but doesn't have great pace or a great kick. Sort of a poor mans Priddis.

We don't need other team rejects, we have enough of our own.

What are the chances of Brown leaving the club but not going to St Kilda? everyone's talking about Saints, they did want him of course but I would have thought Melbourne or Western Bulldogs would be keen on a player like Brown. Collingwood as well, got his brother there and if they want Reid to be a fulltime A. Hunter swingman they might like another Brown

I hope GWS make a play for him as i think we would get a better pick out of them.

He'll nominate a club (which seems to be the norm these days ffs) and we'll get bent over as usual...
