Do the equalisation methods need tweaking?

You're in a professional competition, you shouldn't have access to priority picks every single year just because those players grew up in your backyard. The VFL/AFL got rid of zones for a reason.

Its why the development states need support, why the Eagles & Dockers don't get any priority on WA players ... you might be interested to know WAFL clubs have zones to this day.

To deny the go home factor in developing markets is self serving.

Until we build a better ratio of home grown players we will continue to.

Self serving vic fans better get used to it as it wont change for a while

Support does not necessarily mean exclusive access to players at discount prices. Brisbane and Sydney have won more flags in recent history than most other clubs in the league. Sure, this was done with 'support', but it goes to show that just because they need support, doesn't mean they need to be given on field advantages that see them win more flags in a few years than some clubs have won in a hundred years.

I would argue free agency is helping them quite a bit.
Another idiot. Look at who Hawthorn have lost to free agency (you should know this better than anyone since Franklin now plays for Sydney), vs who Hawthorn have brought in. One could argue that FA combined with COLA has helped Sydney more than any other club just about.

Take your point but its not about the individual clubs, its about supporting the game locally, home grown heroes with links back to todays kids, the next generation.

It absolutely is about individual teams. This is a competition first and foremost, and while i accept that the Northern clubs have inherent disadvantages that they need help to balance out, giving them highly rated youngsters for cheap is not the right way to go about it. Sydney have barely lost anyone to the go home factor in recent years, yet have gotten two top 3 draft picks for very, very cheap. While the current system might be right when a team is down the ladder like the other three Northern teams, when it comes to a team like Sydney who are contending, very well run, and got some very highly rated players in their academy, it is a very lopsided result that could make a massive difference in whether Sydney continues to contend, or drop down the ladder like a Western Bulldogs, or a Saint Kilda did once they stopped contending.

No one has offered up the actual figures of ratios of NSW/Queensland players in the AFL to those clubs and how that compares to the ratio for other clubs. The issue raised was the "go home" factor but if the ratios are similar then it's not really a factor at all.

You still haven't even provided any figures to back up your ratio argument.

Again, you are in a professional national competition it shouldn't matter where you draft players from and getting priority access to multiple players every year is completely antithetical to the equalisation policies of the AFL. The draft is a core pillar of equalisation which is severely compromised due to the academies.

Im not your google.

And also f/s, priority picks but hey thats traditional cheating so all good eh?

Yep a professional competition that has go home factor for the northern clubs. You want a fair competition well the academies balance it out.

It is amusing that your complaining about unfair benefits when melbourne has gotten a ton of "help" over the years.

Its also about giving local crowds local heroes to cheer on while they develop the game up there - remembering that nsw/qld game growth development has been a major focus of league policy since the late 90s. And teams that have been around since the turn of the century should know what they are doing by now, especially given the advantages of the TAC Cup being located in Victoria, and the Father/Son recruiting policy.

You made the assertion, come up with the facts to back it up or your argument doesn't have any credence.

Father sons should go, priority picks have gone and neither of them are anywhere near the advantage of the academies which give access to top end talent every single year, not once in a blue moon or when a team performs terribly.

The go home factor hasn't been proven, only asserted with no evidence to back it up. Even if it were true it is a player retention issue, not a draft issue. The draft is a key pillar of equalisation that is severely compromised every year due to the academies therefore negating the equalisation policies.

The club I support is irrelevant to the argument and I don't think I've ever said we should receive free kicks for nothing at the expense of the rest of the competition.

That's possibly the worst reason to be gifting certain clubs star players. If these teams were not contending i could cop that, but why should they be winning premierships and having exclusive access to their local heroes? Nobody at Hawthorn gave a shit that Franklin or Rioli aren't from Victoria, you love a player because of what they do, not because they happen to have grown up in your state.

If having home town heroes is that vitally important to these clubs, then they can pay a fair price, given how much of a benefit they apparently get from it.

How many premierships have they won through this policy exactly? Theres no reasoning thats going to satisfy you, but the day you get rid of father/son, ill be more than hapopy to concede academys

You can believe it or not.

The facts are the AFL does believe and as such we have academies.

Keep on crying about it if you wish.

We've seen 4 top 5 players leave to go to teams in locations that have better surfing opportunities in recent times.

What about the crap surf factor ?

Why are only certain factors addressed ?

The fact is all teams have inherent advantages and disadvantages but the evidence is clear that there isn't any particular state or area that overall does any better or worse than anywhere else.

If you run your team well you'll do well not matter where u are located and if you run it poorly you'll do poorly.

Apart from the fact that Sydney also benefit from the F/S rule, and have almost certainly done better out of it than Hawthorn, i'm fine if that goes too.

So something can only be a massive benefit if it wins flags? And specifically wins flags within a year or two of actually seeing Sydney get academy players on their list? The fact is that if another club were in the same situation as Sydney, they would have a pick 18/16 on their list instead of two top 3 draft picks. That is a massive advantage, and over a large sample size will almost certainly see Sydney outperform the other club, and likely win more premierships.

The reason there's no reasoning that will satisfy me is that Sydney is a club contending for premierships while adding top 3 draft picks to their lists for a well below market price. It's providing a much bigger advantage than F/S has provided over a two year period for probably any club. Like i said, i'm all for supporting the growth of the NSW/QLD markets, but this support should not be providing massive on field advantages to a few select clubs.

No ill agree with you there, Sydney have had 35 years to get a footing. There are certain advantages they no longer deserve.

If you build a good culture on and off the ground, it matters little where the players are recruited from. The go home factor is just a convenient excuse a club like Brisbane have recently used as they have a dysfunctional setup offield and a toxic playing culture led by Tom Rockliff.

Bullshit

Easy to say for a heartland club

Why are we talking about the Northern clubs when there is a club that has just won 3 premierships in a row and looks like strong favourites to win a 4th in a row? Shouldn't we instead be talking about how there is a system in place that allows 1 team to stay dominant for so long in a supposedly fair and equal system?
The additional measures put in place to help the northern clubs dilutes talent and sends great players to bad clubs (northern clubs).

Its no coincidence Hawthorn had built the core of their list just before the expansion clubs and academy system began. From there they used their core to become a destination team and have since used Free Agency and under value trades to build their team even more and stay at the top.

Take GWS and GC out of the game. Send Mills and Heeney etc into the free draft where they belong and Hawthorn wouldnt be able to dominate as much.

But no...
