My mate, a life-long Pies supporter, maintains that most of the umpires hate Collingwood and give them a hard time. I haven't been watching games for long enough to form an opinion. Is there any truth in the allegation, or is it mere magpie paranoia?

Umpires are inconsistent, whether that means one day we get the rub of the green and another we dont, anyone who thinks they are out to get us has only one eye open. Most of the time they make a bad decision its because of the 'roar' factor.

What he said.
Rd 11 and Rd 14 are two games that the umpiring obviously didn't go our way, but in other games the umpiring has been in our favour. It does really piss me off though when the umps have been getting it completely wrong and you hear a smartass commentator say how many free kicks each side has had, QUATERS GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD, ITS THE ONES THEY MISS THAT THE CROWD IS YELLING AT.

Queens birthday, the umpires must've been melbourne supporters or something, it was an absolute abomination!!!!!! Nothing was going Collingwoods way, Rocca was being man handled & no umpire gave a rats! & how could I forget the umpires in Rnd 14. I didn't see the game but watched the replays of thomas' goal, it was a goal.
But what's done is done, they call it as they see it & no matter how much you yell at the TV screen (in my case) it won't change their mind.

On the other hand I think the umpires have been rather generous towards us, some incidents where I wouldn't have given us a free kick but we got one anyway.

How is this for a theory?

Umpires are fallible, as are we all, and this fallibility most often raises it's ugly head on the big stage. By "Big Stage" I mean in front of the biggest crowds, at the big grounds and in some of the biggest games.

Collingwood plays on the "big stage" and are watched by more people more often than any other side and therefore the Umpires errors occur more frequently and are noticed by more people.

The onlytime this year i thought the umpires were really shafting us was against melbourne (granted i missed the next six weeks) but rocca was once again getting pig and nostril r*ped by holland and we got nothing

Even the ones that were brought up as Collingwood supporters turn on us.
In the 02 Grand Final Umpire Matthew James gave the softest free kick against Wakelin in the goal square, gifting Lynch a goal at a crucial stage of the game.
His Dad still doesn`t speak to him, James senior is a staunch Magpie.

In the inimitable word of Pauline Hanson, please explain.

Don't forget Rocca's goal that wasn't paid:thumbsd::mad:

Yep, and that was right after Tarrant was "pig and nostril r*ped" by Darrell White at the other end of the ground and got nothing. Shocking umpiring in the biggest game of the year.

The Melbourne game was appalling, I couldn't help but find it ironic that Rocca dislocated Holland's shoulder in the return match. He spent so much time with his arms wrapped around Rocca in marking contests, it was only a matter of time before that happened.

As to the question at hand, I have a good friend who is a boundary umpire at AFL level, and a one-eyed Collingwood supporter, so I'd have to say "no they don't". On the other hand, statistically we have more frees against than for (from memory) this season, and a couple of games (Melbourne, St. Kilda) were appalling this year.

Quartermain is a ******** when it comes to showing bias in commentary. Eddie is more impartial than he, Tim Lane and Michael Voss.

We all forget the throw that was paid against Black which was an actual handpass which resulted in a goal to them being with held. It works both ways but as supporters of one side we see it the way we want to see it. Umpires have the toughest job, and they will make mistakes, the key is to try and be consistant and not get the decsions which have a major baring on the game wrong. I think the major problem is some of them try to have an impact on the game.. eg trying to look for frees. It should be the opposite, the frees should be obvious, when in doubt call play on.

I hate Tim Lane, i can't stand him or his daughter for that matter, both complete and utter morons. Voss has his moments but he is no where near as bad as the other 2. The channel 10 commentry team all seem to be just a little bit biased, mind you atleast they know the names of the players, Bruce McAveny(or however its spelt) i'm looking at you, please learn the players names, i don't understand how you thought Scott Pendlebury was Paul Medhurst 3 times in 2 mins in the semi final.

Thats my little whinge for the day...:)

They also have a tend to forget Tarkyn Lockyer's name, I have heard it on 2 occasions. !st time they called him Scott Burns & 2nd time they missed his name in an important peice of play, as though he wasn't involved at all...
Oh well, thems the breaks...

Sam Lane is Tim Lane's daughter?

That explains a lot.

True but she is a public figure and therefore should be more careful with what she says. Thats my opinion anyway, although what kind of journalist would she be if she wasn't controversial?;)

Everyone seems to think that their team is hard done by. We are no different.

I'm sure all the umpires dont hate Collingwood and I'm sure there is no conspiracy.

Pig rape is an extermely aggressive form of rape, and nostril rape is an extremely aggresive form of rape of a differnt body part.

Basically its a very angry way of saying rocca and also tarrnt in many games were mauled

Round 14 was a disaster. Chamberlin took on the game as if it was his own. He's gotta go.

Round 16 v Essendon in the third term was very, very bad.

Round 18 in the first term v Carlton was very poor.

As was the entire Queens Birthday, both ways. I mean, did you see the horrendous decisions which penalised Nick Maxwell and Daniel Ward for 'deliberately forcing the ball out of bounds'? That rule has gotta go. Watching round 8 2002 v Brisbane, Lockyer often dribbled the ball OOB from close range. 'Well played', cries Quarters.

But arguably the worst, anti-Collingwood umpiring going around arose in round 3 2005, v Carlton. Awful.

It's not bias as far as I can see, more or less gross stupidity, both from the umpires, and the AFL themselves for implementing disgusting rules which are both redundant and make adjudication difficult.
