Dockers chase Sheedy

FREMANTLE is to make a determined bid to attract coaching king Kevin Sheedy to the Dockers.



Dockers chief executive Cameron Schwab confirmed yesterday Sheedy would be approached to consider an appointment at Fremantle.

Let go by Essendon this week after a record 27 years at the Bombers, Sheedy could lead a radical new-look coaching team as manager of Fremantle's entire football operations.

His possible appointment would be in the mould of Sir Alex Ferguson at England Premier League superpower Manchester United.

He would renew a long-standing and successful association with Mark Harvey if the former Bombers premiership star and assistant to Sheedy for eight years is appointed Fremantle coach, which seems likely.

The veteran would also renew acquaintances with Dockers football operations general manager Robert Shaw and Fremantle board member Tony Buhagiar.

Schwab was reluctant to discuss Fremantle's senior coach search, or to disclose names of possible coaches.

But he confirmed an approach to Sheedy was on the cards.

"We will certainly be exploring opportunities in relation to Kevin Sheedy," Schwab said.

It sounds like they are looking at the same thing as we had spoken about here several times. Harvey (coach), Sheeds (manager).

I think its a near guaratee that unless Harvey decides he would prefer the Dons job he will more than likely be our coach.

I appreciate where you are coming from but no,I am not sick of it.As long as they keep trying until they get it right it is better than doing nothing. You got lucky with Worsfold,not so lucky with Ken Judge.It's a lottery of sorts,no one has an oracle not even west coast although they would like you to believe otherwise and until we get it right I am happy to keep trying.

Yeh we recruited Woosha from Carlton, besides senior coaches are a totally differennt kettle of fish. Look at our other assistants, Micale and Harris were successful and respected WAFL coaches. Sumich was an ex-player. Thats our coaching dept.

We got Harris ahead of Shaw. You guys have poached Malaxos (Sydney), Broadbridge (Collingwood), Harvey and Shaw (Essendon).

Wasnt Broadbridge's new role overseeing stoppages (?) meant to be groundbreaking. Schwab also has implemented some world class computer system (I cant remember exactly). None of these things have helped you this year.

Now you want to go with some groundbreaking managerial system adopted from the Premier League. How about Schwab just keeps things simple, back to basics and fall back in line. Freo should be concentrating on re-establishing this side not trialing some new modern day coaching method.

Because Schwab is the man he is, he will chase Sheedy and probably get him. Just like he got Croad, Tarrant, Carr, Schofield, Francis, Soloman. And like he poached that raft of assistant coaches.

Compare all this who-ha to more well resourced and successful clubs like WC or Adelaide and you'll find that these clubs are alot more understated. They know that the clubs role is to win footy matches, not to be the market leader all the time.

As far as your coach goes, it will be interesting to see if blokes like Harvey or Bond want daddy Sheedy looking over their shoulder. I hope for Freo's sake Schwab doesnt jump that gun and sign Sheedy in a rush before consulting the man who will be coaching the side.

On Sumich. I am not advocating he should be the next Freo coach. But I do think he has the credentials to deserve an interview, which by the sounds, he should get.

Sumich chances have been blown by a campaign he has run via the media...Which has turned many Dockers off..He would have been better to tell Langdon,Barich, Mainy, The Western Australian, Hagdorn,Geroge and Nesbit to keep there mouths shut.

Wow are you sure you are a WC fan? I actually agree with everything you wrote.
No doubt Schwab needs to justify the big dollars the club spent sending him to Harvard for executive perks school.
Give Harvey the job, let him pick his assistants, keep our draft picks and use them on some speedy kids, clear out the guys who don't want to play or who are too old and play simple attacking footy. It's not rocket science, look how well Port & Brisbane are going.

I'm talking in general. Freo have always recruited players/staff from outside the club. I say you should back your own blokes for once.

Obviously the senior coaching role is different, you have to recruit for that obviously.

And I see Cam Schwab every few days drive past my home in his $200k BMW. I know Freo just as well as anyone, the fact I dont support them means little.
