Here is a list of first round draft picks from WA in the last 10 years:

2016 Sam Petrevski-seton (6)
Griffin Logue (8)
2017. Aaron Naughton (9)
2018 Jordan Clark (15)
2019. Luke Jackson (3)
Liam Henry (9)
2020. Logan McDonald (4)
Denver Grainger Barras (6)
Heath Chapman (14)

Now, a few of these guy are very good players who have the potential to be stars (Jackson, Naughton) and a few are good AFL players (Amiss, McDonald, Clark) but there are not many players picked from WA in general in the first round, and also, from those that are picked, the strike rate that they will end up being very good doesn't seem to be that great.

From the history above, it's almost to the point where you'd be nervous about selecting a high round pick from WA if you were a list manager. The last high end pick that became a star of the competition was Patrick Cripps all the way back in 2013.

What's even more stark, if you look at my team Fremantle, almost all of our best players have come from somewhere else (Brayshaw, Young, Treacy, Pearce, Serong).

So what's going on in WA? Are kids not interested in footy? Does the development and coaching let them down? Are the standards and facilities not up to scratch?

I really think it's something the AFL in general and WA footy Commission specifically, need to start addressing because if this was a report card on all the talent they've brought in over the last 10 years, they wouldn't be graded well.

Because the clubs were expected to do the heavy lifting in regards to development, yet get none of the rewards, unlike in Vic and the Northern states, where the AFL funds most of it.

That should change now with NGA access being open season, starting from this year.
 
Anecdotally, I knew of some regional development squads that closed themselves off from non-indigenous / NGA types about a decade ago. No idea on current state, but a number of reasonably talented (read: WAFL prospects, maybe AFL) lost access to development programs as a result.

Again, no idea if it’s still like that, but I knew multiple people who probably would have been rookies at the very least if they still had access to these programs at 15-18 years of age

You say this like there aren't busts from every state.
2016 - Jordan Galluci (VIC - 15)
2017 - Paddy Dow (VIC - 3), Jaidyn Stephenson (VIC - 6), Lochie O'Brien (VIC - 10), Jarrod Brander (VIC - 13), Matthew Ling (VIC - 14) (what a shit year for VIC draftees...)
2018 - Jackson Hately (SA - 14), Ned McHenry (VIC - 16)
2019 - Fisher McAsey (VIC - 6), Cooper Stephens (VIC - 16), Sam Philp (VIC - 20)
2020 - Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (VIC - 1)

Probably a bit early to make a call draftees after 2021.
 
Underage development is certainly lacking compared to SANFL and over east. Distance doesn’t help either but I do think we underproduce for the size of the state
 
Adam Simpson has on several occasions talked about how behind WA talent is developmentally compared to Vic Metro in particular, but also the northern academies. Which means you will find your diamonds in the rough like Humphries at Geelong for example, but there is no consistent supply of talent.

Really, I didn't know there were first round busts in every year. Thanks for enlightening me.
Compared to other states (particularly footy based states) WA has not performed well in the last 10 years, either in terms of numbers drafted in the first round, or general quality, or those players picked.

In My opinion its because of mining
It turns a lot of heads as a good earning career without needing a university education or be a great communicator/organiser to run your own business.
Also you dont have to leave your home state as opposed to football with a very high probability you do

WAFL scouts are just shocking at their jobs. Nothing more, nothing less. Many good players get lost because they want to pump money into a basketball playing tall unicorns who have zero interest in AFL who then never applies themself and never makes it past the under 16s

If you want to be scouted to play AFL in Western Australia, the best thing you could do is to simply not play AFL. Playing AFL will hurt your chances with this lot

Eagles/Freo need to take control completely and remove the WAFL clubs from the process completely. 100% of WA players should come through the AFL academies going forward with all funding coming to us. The WAFL system is too broken to fix

Good post I've been thinking this myself for a while. Even the women's talent is terrible for a footy state. In a funny way the introduction of an nrl team might motivate the AFL to get their act together in W.A.

Interesting this has all happened in a time when the head of the AFL commission for the past 9 years is a West Australian businessman Richard 'Mr invisible' Goyder. Just add it to the list of reasons he has been pathetic in the role.

Hopefully the academies and change in nga access will help, coz now it's worthwhile for the eagles and dockers to put their wealth to good use by developing their own multicultural and indigenous talent.
 
This is about as good an analysis as I have seen.

I would, with your permission of course, like to take this to AFL house and use it as part of my powerpoint presentation to try and have WA completely excluded from the competition.

We also have to take into account the COVID loack downs. These soft c's from WA don't know the hardships of life and haven't had the luxury of isolation build internal fortitude.

Also English was first round 2016 as well.

Also from last year the Brownlow medalist- Cripps WA, Coleman Medal- Hogan,WA and arguably the best FB- Taylor.

In every position there is some top end WA talent.

Backline- Taylor, Mcgovern
Midfield- Warner, Bolton, Cripps
Forward- Hogan, Waterman, Cameron, Ah Chee, Georgiades
Ruck- Jackson, Cameron, English
