AFL pays for the development pathways in in Victoria and the northern states(may also contribute to SA, not sure).

The WAFC is expected to pay for the development pathways in WA, with no funding from the AFL

That money comes from WCE and Freo, so both clubs are basically expected to foot the bill for development of WA football, with no benefit in return.

Not exactly fair, is it?

Except the AFL does fund the WAFC.

Both directly and indirectly.

Go check their financials.

it’s sad to think how many potential Brownlow medallists and languishing in dongas in the Pilbara, seduced by a life that promises $150,000 per annum, and an anti-social lifestyle involving a mix of depression, addiction to pr0n, booze, ice and/ or gambling, and the opportunity to fraternise with a cohort that’s mostly male, and 100% bogan.

Ha, actually… reading this over, kind of sounds like a career at the WCE.

In My opinion its because of mining
It turns a lot of heads as a good earning career without needing a university education or be a great communicator/organiser to run your own business.
Also you dont have to leave your home state as opposed to football with a very high probability you do
Young blokes are saying no to hundreds of thousands of dollars to play AFL because they'd rather work dirty, hot, 14 hour days for 10 days in a row?

Parents the ones who have to drive them everywhere all the time to give them a chance at AFL where their child will most likely have to relocate to the other side of the country

But unlike in Victoria the parents aren’t pushing their children because there is other options.
If footy was my child’s only option I’d move heaven and earth for them to succeed it.
There’s heaps of country footballers that have the skills for AFL but there’s other options , more family business so the parents pull the pin on early mornings long drives that is required through juniors to have a chance.
Victoria is so tiny the junior pathways are so much easier to travel through as a parent

Vic workers and kids don't FIFO?

Travel likely is one factor in WA but plenty of Vic Country kids drive hours every week.

This is something I have been saying for awhile.
WA underperforms in producing AFL talent on a per capita basis, in quite a major way.
Per capita Vic produces the most, with SA slightly behind them. WA are a fair way behind both.

The issue is that the AFL fully funds the Vic talent league, but expects the WAFL and SANFL league teams to do the development in those states.
The AFL underfunds both those states, and it has been a detriment to Jr development.

Why the AFL, which says it's a national competition, funds Vic Jr development fully, yet not the other two shows that it is still at its heart, a Victorian organisation.
If Victoria was treated the same as SA and WA, the VFL clubs like Box Hill, Port Melbourne etc would have to take on the burden of developing Jr Victorian talent. Can you imagine the drop off in Vic talent if those clubs had to do it. Well, that's the situation in SA and WA.
Those state league clubs are expected to develop the Jr talent, where the best ones won't even play for them in the future.

It's a total disgrace, and the AFL has neglected the AFL heartland while exposing itself as a Victorian organisation, and the fools Gold of converting Qld and NSW into AFL states.

This is why WA has been struggling to keep up their talent production.

This.

But the mouth-breathing idiots on this thread do no understand/care about anything outside of their bubble.

‘If you don’t like it then take it up with the AFL!’

The AFL have absolutely no interest in supporting junior development in WA (or SA) or throwing more money at either because they do not ‘own’ footy in these states.

For better or worse, WA is completely reliant on West Coast and to a lesser extent Fremantle funding football in the state. Without the clubs, where will the money come from? Low ball contributions from the AFL? The state Gov?

The AFL would love to contribute more I’m sure…but they would turn around to the WAFC and say ‘sell us the 2 clubs first.’

That may happen one day, but it would have to be a do or die situation I suspect.

Go check the WAFC financials.

The AFL gives them more money directly than they get from WCE & Freo combined.

The WA clubs/WAFC also get a much better ground deal than Vic clubs, giving them much more money to invest in junior football.

Or would you prefer the AFL 'tax' attendance at Optus like they they do at MCG/Docklands to pay for WA junior development?

100%. Why would WA football invest the cash they make from West Coast and Fremantle to grow junior development? While its their responsibility, it means investing $$$ they ‘earn’ though their ownership of the WA AFL clubs, and no one is demanding they are accountable for it.
They have been extremely poor in this area, but who is to question them? Certainly not the Eagles or Fremantle.
It’s a shame, but that’s what happens when short term $$$ are more important than driving long term participation and development of junior talent.

Most people don't take their kids to Tuesday night training under the illusion it'll pay off with them getting drafted.

And relocating to the other side of the country? people have moved from WA to Melbourne and to a lesser extent Sydney for decades. Australians are incredibly uptight and scared of moving away from mum and dad, in comparable countries like the UK and US it's absolutely the norm for people chasing money and jobs – which was your point.

The whole mines thing is overblown anyway. I know a few people who have done it to work as dishwashers or to make good money at the higher end, but this idea that it's this magical place where you just make heaps of money is false, most people find ordinary jobs.

WA football is fine, it just fluctuates, from 2008 to about 2014 WA would have won every single State of Origin game it played.

It’s just an opinion of someone that’s worked in the mines has children and needed to travel 1000km a week to continue afl pathways.
It’s great you’ve had different experiences.
I won’t dispute or denounce them
Thank you

There was an article in the West Australian today the WAFC are looking to relocate to just outside Optus stadium. It also states they get 11.5 mill per year from the state government due to some Subiaco deal, which cook is trying to renegotiate and lowball them on.

So 11.5 from government and 5 from the AFL and then some from Freo and West coast. Rounds out at about 20 mill revenue which is an ok amount. The AFL don't fund W.A and S.A. excessively coz the WAFC want control over footy in the state. I do feel the AFL would do a better job, even with the current incompetence of W.A chairman Goyder and Dillon.

Does WA have a strong private school system like Vic? Basically every Vic kid drafted these days comes through the elite private school networks

Is that because the colleges give scholarships to good young footballers, or do they grow up in the private system and get developed by them.

I know that some of the private schools here in SA have a good competition, and they do give scholarships to young players. Kossie for instance went and played for Price Alfred College, which is the most expensive private school in Adelaide, but then Rankine and Lukosius both went to a stink average public school.

To answer the question, a bit of both
But once in, the development programs are strong and recruiters tend to look at those kids coming through as being ready for the whole rigours of being a player. Not sure it's such a great thing as means some kids may not get same favour when assessing at draft time

I think that the kids have to preference their college teams over their Talent League teams when playing?

Every word you’ve written there contradicts the reality of a true national competition/ league that WA and SA strived to create and ultimately join.
How so? The reality is, WA and SA are the only states that supply more AFL players than their quota of list spots available. They’d also be the states that receive the least funding from the AFL and receive no benefits of an academy etc.

The first signs of getting something back have been Gather Round for SA, which was only because of the vision and persistence of the SA Premier, and North Melbourne selling home games to play in Perth.

The “competition” is set up to be harder for the teams from WA and SA and there is nothing “true” about it.

I'd say an extra home game for each and a true home ground advantage evens it out now.

I’ll say again…the League is a VFL competition with invited guests (clubs) from interstate.

All clubs benefit in many ways from the league.

Quit complaining.

The sooner the clubs can operate like the league do (all about money) the better the game will be.
