Does your interest in the AFL wane when the WC is on?

I expected this thread to be 10 pages of dumb blokes agreeing with each other that soccer is boring. I wasn’t disappointed.

Did you get a kick out of the 10 pages of the super intelligent cultural-cringers that ran alongside the handful of "soccer is boring" comments from the "dumb blokes"?

Clearly there is merit in the sport of soccer but it is a simple game supported by the most simple folk in every western country that had the misfortune of not having their own football code before british workers introduced soccer in the late 19th early 20th century.

People calling it boring are merely expressing their personal, valid view which is very common among countries like Australia with far richer football traditions than the vast majority of soccer countries. This thread on the main board beckons them to relay that opinion

People thinking because they like soccer, they are smarter and more cultured than people who think it boring are deserving of ridicule.

Even the worst AFL game is still full of real men who don't fall over with the slightest touch and act like they've been shot.

You don’t enjoy the amazing passes? To me this aligns with AFL a bit i.e excellent field kicks etc.

Anyway - like you say we all like different things
Nah, not really. I mean, the ball IS round. Not that hard to predict where it's going to go. Aussie Rules players have to contend with the trajectory, spin and bounce of a prolate spheroid. The truly great players have the visual processing, co-ordination and reflexes of a cattle dog.

What soccer players do with just their feet IS amazing. But what's MORE amazing is what the human hand can do. We've spent thousands of years evolving our hands to be the most finely-skilled machines in all of nature, and then soccer tells us only the bloody goalie is allowed to use his/hers.

To me that's perverse, and why, as I said early, the game will always strike me as a merely a Sunday School Picnic event that somehow broke out into the mainstream.

In fairness, it's so damn difficult to score in soccer, that otherwise decent humans are driven to trying stunts like that.

Which is why I think the game is a very poor ethical role model. Players "try it on" in every sport, but the scoring is usually high enough as to eliminate it as a decisive factor in the final result. Only in soccer is the scoring so low that a successful dive may well result in a match-winning goal.

It is insane. Are the bosses at Ch7 not aware of the absolute crap that we have to put up with.

We desperately need a Martin Tyler equivalent.
It's the Rex Hunt/Dennis Commetti sydrome. All the new breed of commentators want to be like them and entertain.

Those two were good as they were different to the norm of their time. Now the norm is calling the game with all sorts of crap where the game is a background.

It's not radio, we can see with our eyes what's happening. There's no need to describe it all.

What I find almost comically paradoxical about soccer is the convention of putting the ball out of play if someone is injured (or pretending to be). The game itself has a very high tolerance to cheating and opportunistic behavior - root and branch

Playing futsal, it is so annoying when the ball goes out off the opposition player on the far side to the ref and the same player then proceeds to put his hand up or otherwise rush to the ball to presumptuously take the kick. Conversely I played touch football which just wouldn't work with cheating and there is almost universal etiquette in not claiming phantom touches

I used to play touch too, and it's great the self regulating on the touch calls is honoured, but I have come across some teams that flop at a regulation touch to draw a penalty.

Mate, we're talking about people that view football as "product".

It's not as if they are actually representative of human beings, they're cold clinical marketeers.

Put it this way...

I had no idea the Eagles played Essendon last night until I looked at afl.com just then and saw the scores :D

The World Cup always puts the tribunal controversies and media beat-ups over "rule of the week" into proper perspective. As in... who cares about crap? Brazil are playing Costa Rica. This is far more important. I'm sure I'll regain my faith in footy in 3 weeks time once the World Cup is over and I'll be mulling over Roughie's form or Birchall's knee.

I want to be Mile 'The Iceman' Jedinak - pictured with his wife .....just sayin'

By the way 'Up yours Schmeichel' !! - you think you can intimidate an Aussie with some lame sledging ?? We invented it !!

I’m not claiming to be smart because I like soccer. Clearly not everyone who likes soccer is a genius. But if you have a short attention span then you’re definitely starting off behind the eight ball when watching soccer. It’s low scoring. It doesn’t have the same level of contact as other codes. It requires patience in following the build up play and waiting for a scoring opportunity. These things are not conducive to the enjoyment of your average dimwit.

Some don’t like it purely for the staging and diving, which is more commonly seen in leagues and tournaments outside of the EPL like the WC given the wider cross section of players and cultures. I understand that, even if it’s now an obvious double standard given the increasing prevalence of it in the AFL.

It's similar to test cricket in that sense. You need to be patient and pay attention to the intricacies to enjoy it, not everyone wants to watch a sport of intricacies and have long waits for payoffs to occur. As you say, these things are not conducive to the enjoyment of your average dimwit.
