But then it comes down to the interpretation of fallible, human refs. With millions watching. And the potential for corruption.

Increase the size of the goal a little so the scoring is a little easier (I dunno, so a typical soccer score was something like 8-5, instead of 1-0) and everyone knows they’ve seen a fair contest.

As it stands there are way too many question marks (and frankly it alarms me that a large percentage of the world’s population aren’t too concerned by soccer’s built-in dodginess.)
Is that you, Sepp :)

I disagree that goals are the only reason. It is too simple of a reason. There are flops in Basketball and we have Lindsay Thomas in the AFL. When a player can get an advantage, they will take it.

I think it is worse in soccer for 2 major reasons.

1- there are no rules to counter it. Yes, you get a yellow for simulation but it rarely happens. Penalty or cards(and indeed goals) are major decisions which encourage players to act up.

If we add in(and I am not saying it should happen as these are extreme examples)
1) no pens
2) VAR(yuck)
3) bigger goals(yuck)
4) more added time
5) compulsively time off the field if you stay down
(but I should add, the reason why sometimes players stay down on the field is to get the game to stop and rest. an unofficial time out. and of course time wasting)

2- It is not in our culture as much as other countries. Peruvians were confused when we started booing their players for staying down. Us Anglo Saxon countries do not accept divers as much as other cultures. Of course, we are not immune to the odd drop and roll. But there is a lot more dislike of the practice.

And some people would say(not me) that Luke Shuey ducked(hence taked advantage of the rules) to win the FK v port last year. It is up the people who run the game to prevent these things and I dont think FIFA do a good job at this or dont care enough to do anything about it.

these clowns on Fox Footy previewing Adelaide vs Geelong like They're Martin Tyler, Ruud Gullit and Andy Gray gearing up for the World Cup Final. What a ****ing joke.

Yes and I hear on SEN about all these must win games, like Richmond can’t afford to lose tomorrow. Sure they wouldn’t want to but it’s hardly fatal if they do.

This isn’t limited to AFL coverage, happens with coverage of English premier league matches between say Huddersfield v Everton which could be very yawn inducing.

Comparing a World Cup to a regular domestic season game is a bit unfair. I mean a regular season game in Europe would seem fairly inconsequential to me compared to a big AFL final

That's exactly what I'm saying.

My point is that it is only in soccer with its fiendishly difficult scoring that it can potentially decide a match.

Who is Tom Elliot? I googled the name and apparently there is a 3AW announcer of that name. Am I supposed to listen to 3AW here in Sydney so I can get your drift?
Hes one of these morons calling for change to soccers rules like no offside or larger goals without any understanding of the game.

Yes, clearly soccer is utterly perfect. That's why the A-League has been such a smashing success in Australia, destroying everything in its path with its undeniable superiority to all other sports.

Perhaps you'd care to explain the errors in my suggestion?

I mean, I do understand basic maths. I do know that diving is a curse in soccer. I do know that scoring goals in soccer is fiendishly difficult. I do know that players of all sports try to put one over the ref.

Might it just be the case then, that the likelihood of a player successfully fooling a ref is more likely to lead to a match-winning score in soccer than in a game with more prolific scoring?

I mean, do you question the fundamentals of probability? I'd love to hear your reasoning if so.

Australia isnt the centre of the world
America is. If soccer is so perfect, why has it failed to capture the imaginations of the third biggest (and most powerful) nation in the world?

Or India? One in every 6 humans on the planet is Indian, but most of them don't seem particularly taken by the "universal" superiority of soccer.
