Isn’t it a thing of beauty how the media narrative has twisted this whole situation so far that the punter on the street automatically thinks we’ve been handed a mountain of assistance over the past 4 years, yet we’ve only received a (must trade) F2 and F3 from a former sacked coach on his way out to coach our most hated opposition..

Brainwashed punters have actually switched the GC’s enormous assistance package with our sloppy prison cafeteria food like an AFL version of Freaky Friday..

It's incredible, the point of assistance is supposedly to help us catch up to the rest of the competition, but even with our natural first round pick, potential FA comp and possibly getting Sanders, GC will likely be bringing in just as much, if not more, top 10 talent than we will (and in that scenario, our intake would be offset by losing McKay!)

But somehow the entire narrative is on us, how much assistance we've already had (??) and anything we get being far too much!!

I've disliked her since Tarryn Thomas was first recruited at the draft - the first question that she asked in his first media interview (immediately after being called out) was do you think Tasmania should have it's own side?

Make no mistake, access to Sanders will be better than anything anyone has gotten with the exception of Anderson to GC.

It’s much, much better than what we got last year, even if we have to pay a few 3rd rounders for it.

He’s a legitimate chance to be the best player from this draft. He is absolutely the unanimous #1 performed player this last 12 months.

I’d much prefer access to him than say PP #11 as an example.

He may even get a bid inside the top 5.

I know people want more, but if it’s the bottom of the barrel from the AFL, I’m taking it.

Sanders access alone will be viewed as a massive leg up in 5 years.

He’s going to be as good as Ashcroft imo.

They are spending $20m a year to prop up GC and they would probably be insolvent without a shitload of off-field assistance. Giving them a license was a mistake because their market was never viable, but they are pushing for market share and the only way out is to artificially inflate them on-field in the hope some mouthbreather NRL fan jumps on the bandwagon.

Like when Brisbane has a few lean years, this will evaporate overnight, it is completely artificial bandwagon support.

What is our worst case scenario? 4 years on the bottom and record membership and posting profits, we just aren't impacting their hip pocket of other clubs to incentivise them to do something about it.

You are spot on, if the Port pick is #14, that’s a valuable pick, we aren’t losing it just because we have to match a bid.

Having read your post, I went and inflicted it on myself too, it's absolute unbelievable *ing cr@p!

How many times does Sarah Olle say "continually asking for assistance"? The condescending "here we go again" tone, just infuriating. Our total assistance in the history of AFL assistance is what we got last year, 2nd and 3rd round future picks that had to be traded and a couple of extra rookie spots on the list. If we are "continually" asking for assistance, it's because we are yet to ever actual receive any proper assistance!

It is disgraceful that the AFL's own media arm can put out such a biased inaccurate load of sh!t. Barrett bleating on about thinking there shouldn't be any assistance at all. The AFL has the current assistance system in place, it is not as clear cut as it used to be, win less than 5 games, get an extra first rounder, but there is still a system in place. We are as bad as the last team to get assistance under that system and what is being suggested we get is an absolute fraction of what they received. But sure, let's have the AFL's own media reps, sink the boots into us for daring to ask for what we should already be getting.

Really professional of Barrett too, not even being able to remember Ryley Sanders name, really makes him seem like an authority on the whole situation, not being across basic details like that! Then happily suggesting any FA comp we may get should be considered also to be assistance and nothing more needed!

And Olle holding up the Swans (with Barrett conveniently letting everyone know she has a conflict of interest with her support of them!) as the model of "doing it on their own"

Does your head in, this is the sort of sh!t the casual footy fan hears and it is no wonder most of them think we have already had multiple rounds of assistance and probably think, Sheezel, Wardlaw, Clarkson and anything else remotely positive around our club is the result of a handout from the AFL.

Ahhh yes, those famously self sufficient Swans, who went into their final last week with only Mills, Heeney, Blakey, Gulden and Campbell (am I missing anyone?) from their academy.
They really are a beacon of hope for those who are prepared to roll up their sleeves and work hard.

I purposely haven’t posted here so far but I’ve been at some local football over the last 2 weekends and ran into 2 guys I know well who are in recruiting in the VFL after previously being in the AFL system. Take this for what it’s worth but this is what they are hearing around the traps -

1. Eagles still very very keen on Curtin at pick 1 - North still well in the frame to get Reid even with pick 2.
2. McKay gone to Sydney for pick 3 compo.
3. North will get Sanders as a pre list.
4. North really keen on Duursma if they get Reid at 2. However may take a tall or wait to the Port pick for a tall. Tall might be Sullivan from the Bushrangers if he’s still available.

That’s all I have for now but will be interesting times especially if we need to trade for guys like Stephens and possibly Melican from Sydney so we don’t dilute the McKay compo pick.

Direct to Roos or open to all? Where top pick stands on draft​

Ryley Sanders’ father says his son has known his Indigenous heritage for many years but could still nominate for the open draft even if the Roos are handed access to him as an NGA talent.

The Roos will find out on Brownlow Medal day if they have access to the top-eight draft pick as it emerged they might still have to use draft points to match any bid for the Tasmanian midfielder.

Rival recruiters are up in arms about the Roos’ potential access to Sanders, who this year proved he was Indigenous and therefore had claims to being a member of the Roos’ next generation academy.

The league would still need to give the Roos permission to have access to Sanders given current rules do not allow Victorian teams to bid on NGA talent within the top 40 of the national draft.

Sanders’ father Adam told this masthead Sanders had long known his Indigenous heritage and was on Flying Boomerangs tour representing Indigenous players in 2019.

But he said Sanders had a decision to make on going into the open draft or accepting the Roos’ invitation even if the AFL Commission green-lit the North Melbourne request.

After striving to be a high draft pick for so many years, the prolific 186cm midfielder would ideally like to be bid on in the national draft to show his worth rather than just handed to the Roos as a pre-listed talent.

Adam Sanders has an outstanding resume in his own right after 284 games in the NTFL including a league best-and-fairest before taking up coaching and development roles in Tasmanian football.

“We don’t really have a clear picture of what the AFL will do,” he told the Herald Sun.

“He just wants to play footy and he’s good mates with Harry (Sheezel) and did a week with the AFL academy there (at Arden St) and he has a connection with Tarryn Thomas

“Our biggest concern is how do you acknowledge him in the draft? He has worked all his life to get into the draft. It’s not all about the number you go but it’s an acknowledgment of your efforts. So they might end up (needing to bid on him) like a father-son rather than saying, “Ryley Sanders, North Melbourne” at the end of the draft.

“So there are a few things to work through. If he feels like he would rather go into the open draft it’s a no. He is 18 so we can help him make his own decision but if he feels like he’s happy to go into the open draft, we will see where it lands.”

If the Roos did secure access to Sanders but needed to match a rival bid for him the league could still give them extra draft picks as part of an official request that would help them secure the points.

Ryley Sanders did not need to provide documentation of his Indigenous heritage to play with the Flying Boomerangs but this year presented a certificate to the AFL to prove it as part of the NGA process.

“It’s on my mum’s side. We have done some work in the last seven or eight years from my end and that’s where it came about,” Adam Sanders said.

“We have looked into both sides of the family tree. My grandfather was born on Flinders Island and it evolved from there. It’s been a journey for us and Ryley about understanding our backgrounds. But we have met some really good people through exploring it and having mentoring through school at Melbourne Grammar.”
