I mean, he quite clearly is. None of them were the #1 pick in their own age groups.

The only one that came near from that group was Wardlaw pre injury in his top age year.
Yeah, LDU went pick 4 and Thomas went pick 8.
Wardlaw was top 2-3 all year but there's a bit of revisionist history on Sheezel. We might have taken him pick 1 but the draft boards a few months out generally had him around pick 4 or 5 behind Ashcroft, Wardlaw and one or both of Tsatas/Cadman.

People will look back at North having Sheezel on top of their board as a no brainer. But it was actually a brilliant piece of talent evaluation.

Both Harry and LDU where going to be our 1st picks whether we finished last or not. So they both where regarded as the no1 pick at least by the club.

For those comparing Reid as a prospect to our other young guns, from Sheezel's own mouth:

(Harley was an underager and Sheezel was in top year) "I played on him once, he was on half back and I was on half forward. He killed us that day. He does what he likes out there and has all the attributes"

Yes it was, particularly given Sheezel was viewed as an early second rounder at the start of his top age year.

Tom Morris, if we apply for Sanders (for free ) the AFL will say no.

I would be asking for Sanders for free - or at worst for some heavily discounted rate like 50%. I would also ask for a handful of picks from 39-55 to facilitate later trades.

This is not a huge ask given our 4 year on field track record and having to wear the Hawthorn racism issue through no fault of our own.

If the AFL say we have to pay full points on Sanders just say 'thanks but no thanks' - we'll take him at 3 after McKercher. We then use the port pick on Schoenmakers and the later picks to bring in mature players.

AFL and NMFC need to get serious.

Give us something that is going to genuinely help and stop cowtowing to the f***ing Collingwoods and Sydneys of the world.

We need significant assistance otherwise just tell them straight up we're applying again next year.

If it's another load of Darcy Tuckers I honestly can't maintain interest watching this sport another year with little hope this is going anywhere.

So technically, we could apply for pick one
I‘ll be livid if we have not. I wonder whether WC finishing last makes this a bit more palatable at AFL house. i.e it puts a little space between our first two picks. It would potentially allow us and WC to get their favoured first picks.

Having said that, they wont because, you know, consistency / standards / fairness / hypocrisy…

But yeah the whole comp is up in outrage due to us asking about a kid in our pre determined zone that’s been a huge gold mine…..hypocrisy at its greatest
Who hasn’t even been confirmed as being in the academy despite fitting the criteria.

Morris said yesterday on Crunch time we won’t get Sanders if we ask for him specifically. Whatever that means.

What I’ve heard through “managers” is that it’s all Dillon whichever way it goes.
Are you saying that Dillon will make a 'captains call' on any assistance we might or might not get?

What the **** morris?

It’s not like we’re picking a random kids name in the top ten who isn’t in our academy or we helped get the legitimacy paper work for.

Ok, why don’t we ask for Walter instead?

Whoever it was on SEN just confirmed if we do a straight out bid for Sanders then it won't happen. We are working on a round about way of making it happen. Someone please remind me of the GC package where they got 2 NGA's without bidding, plus, plus plus...... what a scam
What does he mean by straight out bid?

I talk to fans of other sides and they insist that getting band 1 compo for McKay will be our draft assistance. It's dumb.

If McKay wasn't going we would get draft assistance.

If we won the premiership this year we would get band 1 compo for McKay getting paid $800k.

They are unrelated things.

Draft assistance is based on past performance. That past performance was with McKay on the list. Being compensated for him leaving as a restricted free agent shouldn't factor in.

I know…and l agree with your thoughts about the supposed criteria…the irony of our gold mine of an academy….watching other clubs loose their collective minds over the possibility we should be given access to him…and afl deciding if we can take a kid in the zone they gave us is quiet perplexing

Perhaps the restrictions on where an NGA can have a bid matched will be dropped.

I think this is what he's indicating too, he's just not clear enough. We'll obviously try to prelist him and it seems the discourse now is we'll be allowed to match a bid where he is bid on ("creativity" being getting sufficient points together to do our other business as well).

And thus disappeared the illusion of fairness with regard to assistance.

There is now outright favourites.

We'll be fine whatever the package is whether it be Sander's access, 2nd and 3rd round picks to trade/draft and soft cap increase.
The AFL will want to give us a boost but not so much that the package that tips the scales given how close the league is.
Picks 2, 3 (McKay) and Port 1st (unless absorbed in Sander's bid - trade out etc.) would be pretty big for us on it's own.
As Clarko said if it's not to be much help then we just roll the sleaves up and get to work.
If we get not much we can bring it up every time another club applies for assistance and use it as a chip on our shoulder.

Our own first pick, a compensation pick for the loss of our #1 25 y/o KPD, and a pick we recieved for trading out a wantaway Pick 1.

Nothing over and above any other club that would be in the same position.

That’s not assistance.

The AFL has been trying to stamp out assistance for years, and we're not sucking on their teat. If taking what we can get involves access to Sanders I say run and do the rest ourselves. No point preparing for disappointment.

They probably should have thought of that when they granted GC the most generous package the game has ever seen four short years ago.
