Strategy Draft assistance 2023 [Twomey: NMFC get #19 in 2023, x2 end of 1st rd picks in 2024, and x2 extra rookie list spots in 2024; no Sanders/#11]

The assistance package will be:

  • bidding on sanders
  • start of 2nd Round (must be traded)
  • start of 3rd Round (must be traded)

Which means if we are wanting to:
1)trade up for Reid
2)bid on sanders
3)collect 4 top 25 selections
4)bring in 2-3 best 22 trade targets

We will need to trade away future picks or non-“required” players in our top 25 players. These could be:

  • Powell (you would think at most we would get is a 2nd rounder, though he would be worth more to us on our list as the 6-9th best midfielder.
  • Zurhaar (who would command a first rounder but seems completely entrenched in the culture of the club)

It may make sense to trade out the port pick for picks we will use in trades (a couple of second rounders for instance) which we would go into the draft with 2, (3), (-16 to ADE) 20+ 23 (from ADE), (-39 to ADE)

Is this ITK or your assumption?

Whoever it was on SEN just confirmed if we do a straight out bid for Sanders then it won't happen. We are working on a round about way of making it happen. Someone please remind me of the GC package where they got 2 NGA's without bidding, plus, plus plus...... what a scam
The AFL Commission determined the Gold Coast SUNS will receive the following assistance package:

Priority Picks
The provision of draft picks for the next 3 years (reviewable annually), including the first pick in the 2019 AFL Draft.

  • Pick #1 and first pick of the second round (currently pick #20) in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.
  • Mid-first round pick (currently pick #11) in the 2020 NAB AFL Draft.
  • First pick of the second round (currently pick #19) in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft.
Academy Access
The Gold Coast SUNS will also receive expanded academy player access for 3 years including:

  • Provision of the Darwin region as an academy zone.
  • Ability to pre-sign Gold Coast SUNS academy players (including those from Darwin) without bidding.
  • Increased rookie list, up to 10 players

Do you know when they determined this outcome? Was it at the end of 2018 or was it at the end of the 2019 season and before the 2019 draft?

Tom Morris, if we apply for Sanders (for free ) the AFL will say no.

Think we need to push for what we need to be long term competitive.

Extended list spots to remain for 2 further years.

Ability to PRE list 2 indigenous players from our academy.

Sanders and Shoemaker listed as academy players.

Soft cap extension to add an additional development coach and indigenous support and development coach.

A F2 and F3 which must be ontraded again, basically enough to hand to WC with pick 2 for pick 1, to basically help both clubs.

This is the type of package that could help, an ability to match a bid just isn't really anything of significance to us.

I agree with all of that up until the swap for pick one bit.

No one on here is prepared to say that Reid is a player than TT, LDU, Sheez, Wardlaw or Judas every time I bring it up. So if we get a FF that we have to on trade I'd rather we use it on other players that could help round out the list or maybe trade with pick 16 for an upgrade to 10 or 12.

Tho if you really put a gun to my head and asked what i really want - I'd rather we just told the AFL to jam their assistance package where the sun don't shine and do it on our own.

We should ask AFL house for a decent draw (in reasonable time slots) and a fair go from the umpires. That would make a bigger difference than whatever shitty compo they’re going to hand out.
Yeah. This is good.

The potential early pick as part of an assistance package might cause a dilemma. Suppose we do get it, and then suppose McKay goes for a truck-load triggering band 1 as expected. Along with our natural pick 2, we'd have 3 as the PP, but the McKay compo ought to be pick 3 (it would be if not for the PP).

So, does that mean we get picks 2, 3 and 4, or do we get pick 2 and two pick 3s?

Those possibilities are confusing the heck out of me.
The AFL will probably give us two extra pick twos on the condition we draft the same player with all of them.

I really like SnowRoo suggestion re getting F2/F3 "must trade" picks and using these to engineer the swap for the Reid pick.

Like it a lot.
Is Reid better than Sheeze, Warlord, TT, LDU etc etc?

Wouldn't we be better off using our picks to get good players at the pointy end of the draft and trust the good players we have will provide us that elite star power that teams seem to need to win flags?

Reid is a better prospect than what Sheez, Wardlaw, TT and LDU were in their draft year. Whether he becomes a better player at AFL is anyone's guess

And they’ll still get 3 top 15 kids this year with junk picks.

Who will be targeted by the Tassie team in a couple of years anyway
Just wait for the AFL to give us assistance through access to TAS kids for the next five years, then having a clause with the new team that it can be more than access to one player per club if the player has lived in Tasmania.
