Well, after watching the Under 18 games for the past 2 days, we have a few options at who we could pick up.

Bryce Gibbs (SA - midfielder)
James Sellar (SA - Ruck)
Scott Gumbleton (WA - Back)
Lachlan Hansen (VIC C - Back)

Any of these players would be a great pick up, who should we go for?

Personally, i like Lachlan Hansen, escpecially because he is from Victoria. He looks the goods in the backline and could be just the player we need.

WHAT DO OTHER PEOPLE THINK?

I agree, we need backmen, we are lacking defenders, we have alot of forwards but no real defenders, we are also lacking another quick in and under midfielder.

I'd love to see Gibbs or Sellar running around in the navy blue, being a Glenelg fan like I am, but realistically there will always be a chance of these guys wanting to come back to Adelaide in a couple of years time. Especially Gibbs, who from all reports is in a very close family. I've seen Gibbs play a few times and he looks the goods.

Ultimately we take the best player available, but if 2 guys are considered close then always go for the home town boy. Hansen for mine.

How did the 4 of them play? Are they attacking defenders? Any info would be appreciated.

It probably depends on where we finish. Gibbs atm would still be favourite to go number 1. However, this would be a risky pick, as good as he would be for us, there is a BIG danger that he may want to go back to Adelaide in a few years. Hopefully Sticks keeps around him and really entices him to stay. Sadly (well, sort of), I think the Bombers will finish last, and they will take him.

For our 1st pick, I would be going for Hansen. Looks to be an absolute gun.

If we get a priority pick at the beginning of the 2nd round, we should be looking at one of Albert Proud or Brock O'Brien. Both great prospects with great pace. Just the types of players which we need. For our 2nd round pick, I would go for a ruckman: either Matt Leurenberger or Brent Renouf. Both good prospects, but they both may be gone by the time of our pick. In this case, I would go for the other of Proud or O'Brien, and if none of them are still around, I would probably go for a Collard, Petterd or Moss.

This draftwill be an absolute ripper, so I would say if we pick some of these players, our development will DEFINITELY be on the right track.

Ive just realised that it doesn't really matter who we pick up with our first pick (sellar, Gibbs, Hansen, Gumbleton, Selwood) because all will be dead-set guns.

I think wat us fans and our recruiters should be focusing on is our 2nd and 3rd and 4th pick. This is wat will separate our team from other teams in 4 or 5 years.

Well I definantly like the look of Hansen after watching his game. Looks to be a creative backman who is good in spoils and marking. Would like to see what he can do up forward aswell, but if we drafted him, id like him in defence.

Gibbs was a class act and racked up about 34 posessions. Everyone knows hes going to go number 1 so theres not too much else to say.

Gumbleton has an amazing set of hands on him and was leaping through packs taking contested grabs. Kicking style worried me a little bit however, just a tad awkward. Was good to see hansen go back and play on him, very interesting duel. Hansen had the smarts to spoil him in thier one on one clashes, however that didnt stop gumbleton from flying over the packs trying to take a grab.

Sellar looked the goods and i wouldnt be against taking him as a potential ruckman, however they say he'll probably end up being more suited to a key forwards position.

Also VERY interesting seeing Andreas Everitt (younger brother of spida) playing today. Not sure what kind of pick a club would be looking at to take him, but he looks like he could make a very worthy investment.

He's very skinny, so hed need to bulk up over a number of years. But has great disposal by foot and quick decision making. Could make a trusty defender or ruckman, which our team needs. Would be a project player however but just a thought.

maybe carlton should think of taking maybe selwood , this might attract one of his other brothers to join the navy blue , what do u guys think ?

I watched all the matches on foxtel very closely, I think Gibbs will be no.1.
If we finish second I think we should take Hansen over Gumbleton.Reasons for this are Gumbleton is very similar to Josh Kennedy, not that this is a bad thing but I think Hansen has more creativity & run ideally suited for CHB,also Hansen is a victorian.I think you need your CHB to be able to run the lines & have good disposal.

I think we should take a key position player with our first pick, as I believe we can still pick up a good midfielder with our 2nd pick ( may have 2 picks second round if we don't win more than 4 games ).

So many good players:

SA - Gibbs,Thomas,Schmidt
WA - Moss,O'Brien,Collard
VIC - Horne,Adams,
QLD - Proud,Tippett.

Thats only a few can't remember the rest, unfortunately I don't think Foxtel has the midweek games on, have to tune in next weekend.

An article in The Age today says that Hansen is too young for this year's draft. Any confirmation of this?

Hansen was too young for LAST YEARS draft.........is certainly old enough this year.

For me I'd prefer in order.....Gibbs, Hansen, Gumbleton, Thorp for our First Round pick.

Hansen probably fills more of a need at CHB/FB, but Gibbs would be just too good to overlook IMO. Would be very happy with Hansen in defense next season though.

Assuming we finish 15th with four wins or less we will end up with Picks 2, 18 and 20 or 21 depending on if the Roos can win two more games or not.

I'd be looking at:

#2 - Hansen - Best available. Would prefer a gun mid or a gun ruckman because we have some KPP talent coming through. Hansen is equally as good forward or back so the versatility is important.

#18 - Leuenberger - If he lasts that long. Failing that, whichever rated mid falls that far.

#20 - Collard/Jetta/Proud - Once again if they fall that far. If we get one at #18, then we get the next best ruckman.

Remember that our 3rd round pick at #36 is likely to go on a father/son selection and will be a midfielder.

btw I'm no draft guru and haven't seen hardly anything of these guys. I'm more looking at filling needs now, the final pieces of the puzzle if you like ... but only if they are rated that highly in the first place. So if there is a KPP and a mid rated the same, I want the mid. If there is a KPP and a ruckman rated the same, I want the ruckman.

It is unfortunate that there is no true ruck tipped to go top 3 and besides we don't have time to wait for their development. We might have to go with makeshift and B Grade rucks and hope that the quality around them makes up for it, much like Street at the Dogs.

#18 - Leuenberger - If he lasts that long. Failing that, whichever rated mid falls that far.

Unfortunately i don't think he will last that long, with many tipping him to go top 10.

However there is a very impressive boy from QLD by the name of Brent Renouf. Saw him play against NT and looked good. It looks like he could be a quality ruckman in 3 or years.

Id expect Carlton to pick him up with pick 20, if we haven't picked up Sellar alread (unlikely)

I like the idea of a Key Defender, so Hansen sounds good. Our Defence stocks are a little low, woth Hartlett a bit unknown and I am not sure Bower is big enough. A great defence can be built around a great backman, with good support from others. Without this, we won't win a flag.

Similar arguments could be made for midfielder and ruck though!

ODN, I am also on the Hansen at #2 bandwagon at the moment. All other things being equal, I am for picking up fast, decent sized midfielders with good disposal for our second round picks....i would look to Renouf or even Tippet if they last later into the draft. I haven't seen Sheldon or Johnston or Williams play so can't really comment on F/S other than what i have read, but it sounds doubtful we will take one of them, but i hope Sam holds off a year on nominating. Who knows what picks we are likely to get next year, but i believe there will be some good ruck talent at next years draft (e.g. Kreuzer and McEvoy). As it stands at the moment I wouldn't mind two of Petterd, O'Brien, Schmidt or Thomas or Millar in the second round. Hopefully somebody like a Boak, George or Colbung are still around at #36, Boak seems to have all the tools to be a good player, I believe he is still recovering from some sort of injury?

I've got Gumbleton going at number 1 on my best available list based on WAFL form, last year and the champs thus far.

I'll post the list at the end of the champs once I've talked to a few people who are attending the next two rounds, for those interested.

I highly doubt Bryce Gibbs would ask for a trade back to South Australia if he was drafted by the Carlton Football Club, your club has extremely strong ties with the Glenelg FC. If you draft Bryce Gibbs I believe that he will stay in Victoria for his entire career and it will be at Carlton. I can see him boarding with Steven Kernahan and his family for the first few months until he has settled in.

If he is drafted by say Essendon FC or North Melbourne FC or any other club that is not really in the calculations yet there is no family or club connection and his close nit family may be a good reason for him to come home

I like Bryce Gibbs, but the best available will satisfy me. I don't think our list lacks potential quality in any position, with perhaps the exception of the ruck. Our backline is short ATM, but we haven't really tried Hartlett, Bower, and Edwards yet. I was a bit worried about our on-ball division, but after seeing Blackwell on the weekend I'm not so worried.

Personally, I think we'll improve out of sight in the next 2 years with just the list we have now. Unlike some of the other wonder teams climbing up the ranks (Richmond, Hawthorn, Bulldogs), our list has structure. I suppose whatever we can get from this year's draft will be a bonus. :thumbsu:

I'm getting over playing for draft picks though. I just want to win again.

It's a really good point about structure. We've got ourself to a position where we need only a couple of mid-fielders and natural development from our kids to be a top team. It's a lot easier to find good mid-felders than quality big-men.

The next three years will determine how good the recruiting was, but my feelings are that none of our selections are duds and as such we're going to be a very balanced team in three to four years.

According to channel 10 news last night, if Carlton win 0 - 1 more game this year and finish bottom, we get picks 1 & 2, due to the priority pick system (8 wins or less over 2 years).

Finishing last could be a blessing in disguise. GIBBS AND HANSEN!

SAying that Id love us to win all of our games!
