Hard to comment on SPS without knowing him and his ability to deal with life in Melb - if we don't pick him it will be because of this factor.

I see it as :

1 - McCluggage
2 - McGrath
3 - Ainsworth
4 - Brodie
5 - Setterfield (matched bid) ... Bowes (matched bid) .... then take SPS / Taranto depending on above go home factor assessment.

Whilst I love Brodie the thought of our best 2 minds getting around 30 handball each week puts me off.
Scrimshaw or Taranto with the former my favourite.
Will take a year or 2 but I believe he is the better option.

Scrimshaw Brodie Taranto.

Either one ill be happy with, not sure on the consistency of SPS which worries me. i want more than 10-12 possessions a game from a pick 5.
In the under 18 championships, Scrimshaw averaged 16 touches, Taranto 18 and Brodie 21. SPS averaged 18. (I didn't watch the games so dont know how much game time they each got).

SPS can win a game with his 10 to 12 possessions therein is the difference.
Once the lad has intergrated into our team culture and Melbourne life style,
hopefully Andy Walker really looks after him, he'll be an absolute gun no doubt , we'll be licking our chops that the choice was made.
He's a very special talent.

I voted Brodie, but my preferred preference would be Ainsworth. The thoughts of a foward line containing McKay, Curnow, SOS and Ainsworth is very exciting, on the other hand Cripps and Brodie in the middle is mouthwatering as well.
At the end of the day if we get one of Ainsworth, McGrath, McCluggage, Brodie or Taranto I will be happy, if we select SPS or Scrimshaw I will be disappointed, if we select any one else, someone's house may get burnt down.

Taranto spent much of that in the forward line as well. Scrimshaw in defence.

Does anyone have access to the tac cup average disposal numbers etc?

What's Scrimshaw's best position?
Cos if it's as a defender who drifts up to the wing, aren't they Marchie and Plowie?
So I'll say the high possession stoppage player in Brodie this time.

From my research, Brodie doesn't get elite numbers in the midfield at all. Only averaged 20 per game during tac cup. That's not enough for a one dimensional player in the mids and a pick 5.

I'm warming to Taranto now. 27 touch average. had his first pre season ever last year and can take a mark and hit the scoreboard.

SPS with pick 5 based on shear talent and then a promising big bodied mid (many to choose from) with pick 25.

Right now, we need explosive potential match winner types (who can kick goals) more than a reliable and solid 25 plus a game accumulator, so on that basis we should take SPS.

But then again, i can see the argument to get support for Crippa in the guts going forwards..

Pretty happy we kept pick #5 when all is said and done, we should get a very good player with that pick.

That's about it in a nutshell, many here have put in different ways but that's exactly how it should play out. If he is available and Silvagni were to pass he be taking a big gamble.
I have huge positive and fuzzy gut feel about this lad no wavering at all, he'll be the next Cyril or Daniel has the potential to be just as impactful and inspiring as the guns mentioned in a few years time.

SPS for me .
Love dual sided footballers and there are precious few of them in the game today .
They can find that vital time and space and SPS can finish the job with class .
Has been suggested that he wants to play his football in Melbourne so no go home factor there .
I would think that we need a more in and under type with grunt to help Cripps out. SP-S has the skills by the sound of it but is he grungy enough to put his body on the line ? Is seems a bit like he is another Yarran in that he will use the ball well when given it, but does he get his own footy in the packs which is what we need more of............just how I see it !!!
