List Mgmt. Draft Watch 2015

The rankings aren't done by the recruiters though, players shooting up the rankings is more due to journalists finding out who recruiters are keen on. They find out recruiter from 'team with a top 10 pick' is keen on Pdub so suddenly Pdub is shooting into the top 10, when recruiters have considered Pdub a top 10 pick for 18months.

This is the other side to my post above.

Whilst it seems players fly up rankings/fall mid November, in reality clubs had their lists pretty set in August/September. There might be minor changes after this as they formalize their lists and the coaching dept gives some input as to what their needs are, but really everything post September is dotting "i's" and crossing "t's".

McLeod and Goodwin well and truly playing midfield by the time Bock and Rutten came along but yeah, great defence.
Actually no McLeod started forward, then played midfield, then played his last 5-6 years across half back. Goodwin also returned to half back in his latter years as well as one year as a leading forward.

By then we had Roo, Edwards, Thompson, Stenglein/Shirley as our main mids.

We have Sloane and Brad Crouch as our two main inside players, at the moment. For the purposes of this, I'm saying that BCrouch has no further injury issues. There, we have two elite players. We also have MCrouch, CEY and Gore (who I think could surprise many) coming through the ranks, not to mention Grigg and Lyons (albeit I don't think they will make it). We have Smithers as our sole great outside player. We have Knight, Hampton and Rat coming through the ranks. That means we have much less outside midfield depth than inside, 7 inside players to 4 outside - five if you count Seed, who I see as a half-back. I don't think adding a Tucker type is going to hurt that much?
couldn't disagree more strongly .....but there opinions & we'll see soon enough what the clubs thoughts are ;)

9-Milera or Francis for me
13-Burton

I still see the need for some outside class and a young player who could be that Menzel replacement if he gets injured. Milera is that. Can play as a medium/small class forward. Some what like what Breust can do. He also in a few years switch onto a wing with Hampton and Knight.

Francis is looking better and better the more I try to disect his game and check my notes. His Class with ball in hand I feel is an undefeated aspect in his game. Consistence can be an issue sometimes but that can be ironed out. 2nd best player in the draft and if he was 3 cm taller he would be talked about as that potential number one pick.

Burton was my #1 best player coming into this year. If not for injury he could have kicked 15+ goals in the u18 championships. Best player on a lead. Leaps high for marks. Solid speed and if he can improve his endurance be could play midfield stints. Really professional the way he has attacked his rehab.

Oliver is the best contested midfielder after Hopper. Clearance king and has ollie wines like traits. Can play forward if needed. Have a feeling Melbourne take him with one of there picks.

McKay is something special. Doesn't hit the scoreboard that much but provides and athletic target who can be a great foil to a #1 key forward down the line. The Drew Pietrie comparison has been used and thats what I think he could become in the right system.

My draft order:
Carlton-Weitering
Brisbane-Schache
Melbourne-Parish
Essendon-Weideman
Essendon-Curnow
Gold Coast-Milera
Melbourne-Oliver
Carlton-McKay
Adelaide-Francis
GWS-Hopper payment
Carlton-Mathesion
Richmond-Ah Chee
Adelaide-Burton

We need KPP and elite balanced mids.
Yes ....and we're not a strong marking side either thru the mids or as Forwards

Tex and Jenkins not great contested marks

Dangerfield was our premier contested mark thru the midfield ....gone

It's a definite list weakness

We need KPP and elite balanced mids.
Agree with KPP (in particular KPF)... would be extremely happy if we get Harry McKay. Comes in just in time for when Jenkins and Tex retire.

Balanced mids, also agree... just don't want a pure inside player. That's why I like Mitch Hibberd - has some great outside traits, but is also good at winning contested ball.

Great analysis ......great logic :thumbsu:

Wayne's-World I would be interested to see some power rankings from you re: how you would draft our players based on needs and talent. Our opinions seem to differ, I just want to see how much :P

couldn't disagree more strongly .....but there opinions & we'll see soon enough what the clubs thoughts are ;)
To be completely honest, I'd be happy with most situations - except if we draft two talls, two inside mids or if we draft Bonner/Balic. I just think if we draft, say, a Francis and a Tucker/Hibberd type, we will be a perfectly balanced, versatile side who can push in 2017-19.

Harry McKay
200cm/85kg
24/12/97
Key forward
Vic Country/Gippsland Power
Made people take notice with a four-goal haul early in the TAC Cup season and has continued to generate interest in club ranks. A left-footer with pace, McKay also has the athleticism to push onto a wing where he can use his natural running ability. He keeps showing exciting snippets – a good mark on the lead, a twist and turn to find space, or a goal that looks unlikely.

I'm having nightmares of a Rhys Stanley.

How about Mathieson? Kicking not great but absolute ball magnet in close. Probably a Matt crouch clone though - don't need two of him.
Yep exactly what you said i wouldve put him in before ah chee and tucker but feel we have his type covered. Very matt crouch like. I think carlton or essendon will select him in the top 10.

I want Oliver ......he actually is a bigger need than Francis

One contested beast of a midfielder versus a Goddard player

As good as Goddard has been over his career at reading the game, getting possessions (cheap) and precision kicking .....he's never been a game winner or a structural player

Concern Francis = Goddard????
Pyke has been quoted that he wants players that can play various positions. This is francis down to a tee.

Surely bombers don't go Weideman and curnow?

The list looks pretty accurate imo. I dont know if tigers will go ah chee over balic though. And maybe essendon go a mid instead of 2 fwrds.

If You're talking Goddard .....you'd have to think about it over other options
Are you trying to say if we had the option to draft a young Goddard we'd have to think about it v other options? Or even picks a few before ours? I think everyone would be happy to give up a top 10 pick to get a career like Goddard's out of their player.

This is a really critical draft for our future, make or break.

Its been said we've been good at getting late pick diamonds like Stiffy, Sloane and all those rookies, but there's luck involved there - we ignored Sloane altogether in his 1st draft year, and if you miss then no-one bats an eyelid and you try again next year. The first 15 is where it counts but every year its filled not only with future stars but also mediocre Brent Reillys and soon to be duds. If we nail 2 stars it will go a long way to mitigating the Tippett losses and set us up for years, if not we're stuffed.

The first round is where the stakes are high and when recruiters really earn their money, later rounds are gravy. Hopefully Oglivie will pick Dangerfields and not Brad Eberts.

Carlton - Weitering
Brisbane - Schache
Melbourne - Parish
Essendon - Weideman
Essendon - Francis
Gold Coast - Milera
Melbourne - Curnow
Carlton - McKay
Adelaide ...

I think we may be disappointed.
