List Mgmt. Draft Watch 2015

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We’ve just finished our Phantom Draft on the Carlton Board.
Please feel free to let us know how we went on behalf of your team.................but be nice :)

I first read that as "Please feel free to let us know who you want from our team".:drunk:o_O:cool:

I think they did rate him as possible number 1 after the camp last year
So he's slid over the course of the year?

Like big Jimmy Sellar

Broke his ankle later in the year in the 2014 season [after earlier breaking his hand] and missing the TAC Cup Finals for the Ballarat Rebels, the injury necessitated the insertion of 2 screws etc which resulted in him being unable to do "serious" training for close to 5 months, hence the slow start to the 2015 season. Still averaged 23 disposals in the TAC comp, and still good enough to represent Vic Country in the U18 championships where he averaged 18 disposals.

The good thing is the recruiting staff at all AFL clubs will be well aware of these pertinent facts unlike us Big Footy Eggspurts and most of the media eggspurts.

Did Big Jimmy Sellar break his ankle and hand the previous year and have virtually no preseason in his draft year??

Add Northern Territory to that list. So much talent but they need some players to aspire to and talk to in elite programs so they can stay in the system for longer. They need to add a Tasmanian and NT academy or add more funding to these states. Their getting left behind. I wouldn't mind say a Port Adelaide, Adelaide, West Coast or Fremantle academy for the NT. For Tasmania say North Melbourne, Melbourne or St Kilda.

Looks like Melbourne have the early running on the new Academy proposal being developed. I'd imagine at least one SA team will be in there, too with PA having a greater right to one at us.

The AFL needs the game to grow in NSW and QLD as the two states combined equates to more than 1/2 of Australia's population. The AFL needs to engage fans in these two states to gain their share of the pie, or in this case the $2.5b TV rights deal they signed with Foxtel, Channel 7 and Telstra.

So they will give concessions to the Northern states to keep them strong. I just hope they don't neglect the traditional footy states to a point that they drive away disillusioned fans from these states that live and breathe footy.
Why do we need to grow on the eastern sea board and get more $$$ from tv rights? At present it is only going to players (already well overpaid IMO) and GWS/GC. How about giving back to the fans who drive the pay cheques of players and admin. Without fans, there is no demand, thus no tv rights and then no massive pay for players et al.

Players are less important than they think. If fans followed players, half the cats fans would now be suns fans, and the swans would have 40,000 Hawks fans after Franklin left. I would have stopped watching when Modra retired. FANS FOLLOW CLUBS! Not playets

Earlier today I tweeted some of the leading draft journos.

Gingoes!!! We draft 2 young SA guns. 3 SA boys come back to Adelaide in the trade period, and a staunch Collingwood kid actually wanted out...and nominated us (for once).

This would be a dream PR scenario for the club since the defection of home-sick Paddy.

It's big picture stuff. If we want the game to grow it needs to be truly National. For that to happen, the non traditional state's clubs have to be successful and they need to have local players playing for them. Suck it up for a few years.

Stuff 'em I say.

These areas don't have an interest in the game because they didn't grow up with it. Exposing the kids to our incredible game, giving them a team they can legitimately cheer for and heroes they can aspire to, will mean AFL expands beyond its current confines.

Luckily those running the game aren't as small minded and aren't happy for the game to suffer to protect their petty allegiances.

Petty allegiances.
There is nothing petty about thinking GWS and the Suns are a bag of crap.
Go Crows.

Yet the prospect of following a competition where your team statistically has a chance of winning once every 20 years isn't a concern compares to having a team in west Sydney where they couldn't give a stuff about afl. Nor will the next generation or generation after that.

We certainly have different definitions of what a successful afl competition looks like. I don't think that makes me closed minded. Also, you're an arseh*le.
Thank you very much for validating what I said.

Bicks, Please tell me that you are not trying to suggest that a broken hand and a broken ankle with two pins inserted is a good thing for a young footballer, by suggesting it means he has an excuse that he couldn't transition as well as hoped to the midfield? Come on mate

Pins in his ankles already is not a plus, neither is multiple breaks. Your joking around right? Or your saying the pertinent facts are he is injury prone. Right?

Please say yes, it's only logical.

There is a question why so many of these kids are getting so many bad injuries. Surely not up to the rigour of heavy duty sport with young frames?

We are not getting Parker. Please stop.

I guess we don't know who is coming in via trade/FA next year to really understand what our deficiencies are.

If Parker actually is, and Ben Jarman, and the draft next year lacks talls but is strong on mids... maybe we do take a KPP this year?

I agree though, I want to draft some midfield class.

I believe those posters who said "the AFC won't get Parker" have missed your point.

That being that if you are drafting with need in mind, then it can no longer be seen in a yearly proposition.
As recruitment of players starts much earlier the AFC has to assess who it has in the trade pipeline and what role they are likely to fill in 12 months time. This will be dependant on how confident they are they will get their man.

For example: Parker, Neale or someone else, if they are confident they will fill that spot there is no need to pick Oliver (for example sake) at the expense of a kpp or other talented player they want.

On the flipside, if you believe in only drafting for best available talent this argument is superfluous and not for you.

Anyway Dayton shows your thinking about the long game, very thoughtful.

How the hell does Melbourne get the territory? That's our traditional backyard. Used to be part of our state ffs. When territorians need to go to the city they go to Adelaide. We've developed the territory since the overland telegraph to the Ghan. **** Melbourne.

This is the danger with getting caught on the back foot with this academy talk. The planning is already well under way and zones are already being earmarked. I hope we're on the front foot here

Yeah, there is a heap of serious injuries among the top prospects, certainly a tough game. I will try and put an injury table together later. Isolating only Burton's injury as a risk is ignoring some of the other quite high risk profiles of his contemporaries.

And I read Bonner is another Essendon supporter, surely that indicates a serious head injury? What is with that.
I didn't realise SA bread volunteer guinea pigs

Had glandular fever through the middle of the year I believe, which impacted on his U'18 carnival form and fitness levels when he was drafted.

The flame out/fail rate is the reason you can't make future list decisions based on who you draft. it is industry standard that all teams draft best available, and if there is a tie break you might consider position. The other thing is even if you get the draft pick right, it's 3,4 maybe 5 years before they are doing heavy lifting for you.

Draft best, trade for need.
