Just some ludicrous selections for us at pick 9 .......trying to stay calm .......the drugs are helping

Love talking Francis, Oliver, Mackay, Burton, Weideman ......but them someone throws us Mathieson ...and i lose my S...t

As long as it isnt the AFC throwing him at us on draft night

good show, they seem to think Francis is likely at 9 with Burton more likely late teens.

Yeah he said he was laughed at for mentioning Francis at 9.

Some interstate teams thinking he's a flight risk. He sounded less confident though.

Newest episode of Road to the Draft

Definitely worth a listen.

My key takeaways:

- Francis: “more and more likely” will slip to pick 9. Was laughed at a few weeks ago when he first mentioned this

- Burton: a top 25 pick but first he’d realistically go at is Adelaide’s pick 13

- Parish: either Dees or Dons. Not certain to go at 3, 4 or 5. Could be pick 3 to Dees although that could also be Curnow or Weideman

- Bombers pick 4/5: looking at Weideman, Oliver, Milera, Curnow and Francis. Bombers likely looking for a tall and a mid at these picks

- Oliver: Dees may take him at 7. Gold Coast won’t take him at 6. Will be gone by Richmonds pick 12

- Milera: will be gone by Carltons pick 8. Weideman and Mackay may be there for Carlton

- On the draft depth: first 10 – 12 are really good, next 15 are good (with a couple that will emerge as stars over time), next 15 you’ll find a couple of good players (a few diamonds in the rough), from 45+ it’s a lottery

I believe he also said that Carlton wanted the priority pick to take Weideman. They may rate him higher than McKay at 8 if both are available.

When is Geelongs first pick?

It was more the trade period that 'screwed' us with this. GWS traded out their picks 7 & 8 meaning two extra teams came in ahead of us to trade players with picks GWS would have otherwise being using to secure their academy players.

So they played the system as well as one could have but as a result, we've become a bit of a loser from it as our picks have really moved down a couple of positions as a result of that.

Good post ... except that our pick 9 is only affected by GWS' original pick 8 - pick 7 was originally Collingwood's and they would have been in the mix for live (non-academy) selections if they hadn't traded for Treloar.

Just read some 10/10 chat in this thread about Rhys Mathieson from Monday/Tuesday.

Just for the record - I'm critical in most of my draft profiles. These guys, right now, are not AFL players. They'll become them - but now, they're not. There are reasons for that. Most profiles only cover the positives. It's bullshit, you'd think we'd have six current brownlow medalists in the TAC cup reading them.

Being critical of elements of Rhys Mathieson doesn't mean he's shit - or another Jarryd Lyons. Really, there are only a few small things that separate players like Lyons from Joel Selwood - decision making, spacial awareness and work rate. So in 7-8 regards, Jarryd Lyons could be near identical to the guns of the comp. But it's in 2-3 areas he's not, which is what holds him back. It's what holds most spuds back from being good.

I used Lewis as a comparison for Mathieson - in some ways he's like a Selwood or Hayes, too.

What I am sure about is that he will make the grade. He's a gun. Ball winning is one of the easiest skills to translate to AFL level. It's why inside mids are more reliable early draft - we've nailed how to identify talent with them. Mathieson's provided two excellent seasons of junior football. Consistent and dominant. What more do you want?

Sure, he lacks the power of Danger and has some flaws. But all players do. In Mathieson you're getting a replacement for him. Not in explosiveness, but in ball winning. Someone who'll bullock their way through at the clearance and extract the hard ball. And work hard and tough around the ball. Like a Lenny Hayes did.

We may not get him at 9, or 13, or at all. But if we do - he'll be an excellent player for us. Just not the sexiest. But sexy players don't win you flags. Good ones do.

But have you watched him with your eyes?

Can people stop saying Pick 9 and 13. We will end up with 13 and 18 by the look.
Maybe there are 8 players that would be taken ahead of Francis. There isnt 12.
Likewise Burton. Pick 13 maybe a risk. 18 all day everyday.

You do realize that it's academy players that will be the drop right.

I.e. it has absolutely no impact on who is available and who we select.

I have heard that he is moving well and am sure that the due diligence will be done. It will be interesting to see part 2 of the interview as part 1 was focused on the initial injury and recovery for the first 8 months. Put it this way if we take him with one of our picks the club has deemed him as a reasonably safe prospect. Oh and I believe Brodie Smith was once a port supporter also...

Sorry Smthers, on that info "delist".

Happy for that to be the case. Do not want us to take risk on him and if he is gone before 9, it means that someone will slide down to our pick. Double win in my eyes.
Stiffy .....we have the BEST intel on Burton ......Liptak his surgeon, Physio's from North Adelaide

If any club has the "inside" knowledge on Burton it'll be the Crows

There will not be any risk ......if we take him, then the club is 100% confident in his body

It'll be clear who we take at #13 how the club feels about his injury ......IMO Burton at 13 is ours to pass up

The academy players don't really impact us that much because they were never ours to start off with. The 13 players we would have selected from will still be there.
Correct ......and in reality none of the Academy players affect the draft order ......yes a player who's rated and probably bid on at #3, will still be taken in the 2nd round of the draft (like father /son selections of old)

This is because those clubs have traded back in the draft to accumulate points ........Hence why Carlton has #8 from GWS

It's the fact that he was a crows supporter but switched while his dad was our runner that is concerning. I have an issue with people who switch football teams for the most recent premier.
The kid was 6-7 years old, he switched when his Dad was flicked as runner. What's the big deal?. I wouldn't care if he started following them last week.
