List Mgmt. Draft Watch 2015

Adelaide interviewed him at the combine
Adelaide probably would have interviewed around 10 players at the combine. Less than usual, given that our picks fall in a narrow band (i.e. didn't have to worry about 2nd or 3rd round selections), but they would have interviewed every player they are considering.

My preference would be:
Francis
Milera
Oliver
Ah Chee
H McKay

Don't know enough about the rest to rank them appropriately.

Midfielders (or at least players with the potential to play in the midfield) 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th, before McKay as the first tall at #5 on the rankings. I would be more than happy for Adelaide to take mids with both #9 and #13. KPPs should not be a priority in this year's draft.

How funny is that, in one trade period we have gone from too many inside mids to too few lol!
I agree with you about Gore, I'm really keen on him and I reckon he will play between 6-10 games next year
Not so much in one trade period, but in the space of 12 months. Losing Thompson at the end of 2016 will be the tipping point.

We've lost Dangerfield and Kerridge in 2015. In 2016 we will probably lose Grigg and Thompson. That's 4 inside players gone within 12 months. We should get Brad Crouch back from the injury list (fingers crossed), but we definitely need to grab at least one gun inside midfielder in this draft.

We still have CEY, Lyons and M Crouch, plus VB and Douglas, but that's not a list of players which will fill any opposition coach's heart with dread.

I didn't think a prospective draftee could train with an AFL club prior to the draft?
AIS players get to spend some of the pre-season training with the AFL teams. Each club usually has 2-3 players assigned to them.

We're talking about the 2014/2015 pre-season, not the current 2015/2016 pre-season.

As long as we draft elite talent, i don't care what position they play and whether it is a need or not. Get the best talent and the rest will sort itself out.

Yep draft best available talent, even if thats an inside mid. It looks more likely that Francis will be available and he would be a great get then Hibberd at 13.

If we walk away with that we should consider ourselves very happy.

How many outside mids do we need? With Seedsman, Hampton, Wigg, Smith, Douglas we are well covered. Inside mids maybe not quite do much but Both Crouches, Thommo, CEY, Gore, now watch this lad surprise us all, Lyons with VB in reserve we have enough. I would prefer Oliver ahead of Milera purely based on his body size. Like everyone, that is my opinion. As I have said before I would personally take both the McKays if available, but I reckon Harrison will go before our first pick.
As far as I am concerned outside mid is the only glaring need we have. Seedsman, Hampton and Wigg might not even make our best side, they certainly didn't show great form last year. Smith and Douglas had terrible years really and Smith was moved back to defence because he just didn't seem comfortable in the midfield. So actually we have zero outside mids and it was obvious last year that this was our glaring weakness. We have great talls at both ends and we have have great small forwards and defenders. We just don't have any speed and more importantly disposal accuracy through the midfield and drafting someone to hopefully be ready in 4 years to replace an area that we are already very handy in just makes no sense.

Aaron Francis
Clayton Oliver
Wayne Milera
Callum Ah Chee
Mitchell Hibberd
Darcy Tucker
Harry McKay
Rhys Mathieson
Ryan Burton
Ryan Clarke
Luke Partington
Kieran Collins
Harley Balic
Riley Bonner
Ben McKay

If we can get one of Oliver/Francis/Milera and one of Hibberd/Tucker/Ah Chee, we'd be in a very good position.

Id say theres a fair chance of that.

What - even though the combine was before trade week?

Can't recall seeing Grigg play as an inside mid. Did you mean Lyons?

OK.. that does change things a bit, but not a whole lot. They would have had a fair idea what the outcome of trade week was going to be - the Dangerfield deal was more or less sorted by that time, being lodged on day 1 of the trading period. They would have known that they weren't going beyond the 2nd round of the draft, aiming to have 3 selections inside the top-30 (as Noble frequently stated during his trade week interviews).

Given that, they probably would have interviewed around 30 players. They would know that the top-5 players, plus the academy kids, were out of reach. Beyond that, they would have interviewed every kid they thought likely to be available between (live) picks 6 & 35.

I see from the point of view, that for the last 2 years or so we been complaining that we have riches of inside midfield talent when in retrospect we really don't have, what we had was depth inside middies who aren't good enough to be top 22! Otherwise if we had been so spoilt for choice it wouldn't be such a pressing issue after losing Patty and Thommo to follow!

No, I meant Grigg. Grigg is the one who is on the 12-month "dead man walking" contract, following in the footsteps of LJ and Martin. I expect him to be delisted at the end of 2016 unless something changes radically.

Grigg isn't particularly strong "inside", but he's far too slow to be an "outside" midfielder. That's why his AFL career is stagnating - he really doesn't have a position at this level. There is a place for slower players in the AFL, but they have to be elite inside midfielders with exceptional decision making skills and with elite disposal by hand and foot. Grigg isn't particularly strong inside and the only aspect of his game which is elite is his left foot kicking.

If he is to survive, then he has to find a way of becoming a more contested "inside" player.
