The last top 10 pick we selected turned out alright (hi Michael Hurley)
Francis?

IF we go into draft night with 6 / 7 / 8 and Ellijah lasts then we absolutely can take the risk on him
No doubt he is much better then perkins, Hollands/Thilly Cox and Reid yes please take it the bank

If it’s thilthorpe who slides there’s no way we take Cox and Reid. Would have to be at least taking 1 mid in the 3 picks especially if we are taking Brand and Eyre

If he slipped that far, i'd expect the Crows to make a move on pick 6 as well.

We are sitting nicely having those run of picks.

What am I missing here.

Also we drafted Hurls with the intention to play forward did we not?
Pretty sure he largely started as a defender - I remember Hurley beating Nick Riewoldt in a 1 on 1 in that game that was Saints first loss in 2009 or thereabouts that was early in his career and thinking we really had someone there. We mucked him around for a couple of years as a forward after that as part of the try every key defender as a forward policy that saw Hurley, Carlisle and Hooker all get their chance.

Actually I remember the Tredrea game too.

Our deficiency is clearly a KPF. If we trade up for pick 2, is McDonald actually ready to fill the void and play from round 1 as a KPF at AFL level?
Would think Wright is FF in Rd.1 2021.
Stewart CHF unless he goes back and someone else steps in (Jones perhaps?)
Stringer as 3rd tall.

Can't think of too many KPF's who came straight into AFL.

Wouldn’t be taking him to be an instant success but more eyeing off 3-4 years into his career when we hopefully would be in a better position to contend.

No kid is ever ready to fill that void. WAFL form is good but the key defenders at the lower level are small plodders compared to their counterparts at AFL level. The form likely holds him in good stead for the future as he develops.

Regarding the KPD in the first round thing, here's the top ten KPDs this season according to different rating systems and where they were drafted. Before anyone gets bogged down in it, yes the KPD rating systems are a bit weird and there are outliers, but you get the general gist of it.

AFL player ratings top 10 KPDs
Harris Andrews - pick 61
Jeremy McGovern - rookie draft, pick 44
Dane Rampe - rookie draft, pick 37
Mark Blicavs - cat b rookie
Tom Barrass - pick 43
Lyke Ryan - pick 66
Aliir Aliir - pick 44
Darcy Moore - pick 9
Cale Hooker - pick 54
Jacob Weitering - pick 1

(2/10 taken in the first round, with Moore having been a swingman but more KPF at first)

Stats Insider top 10 KPDs
Andrews - p 61
Steven May - priority zone
Moore - p 9 (as a swingman, but more KPF)
Weitering - p 1
McGovern - rd, p 44
Dylan Grimes - psd, p 2
Tom Jonas - rd, p 16
Ben McEvoy - p 9 (as a ruckman)
Robbie Tarrant - p 15 (as a KPF)
Phil Davis - p 10

(5/9* taken in the first round)
*Excluding May (who was more of a KPF) because of zone selection
**Of the five, only Davis and Weitering were taken as defenders)
***For those wondering, Alex Rance was taken at pick 18.

Compared with the top 10 midfielders for instance:

Neale - p. 58
Martin - p. 3
Boak - p. 5
Steele - p. 24
Fyfe - p. 20
Dangerfield - p. 10
Petracca - p. 2
Merrett - p. 26
Bont - p. 4
Adams - p. 13

The average pick on this midfielder list is 16.5 - while bugger all currently "elite" KPDs have been taken with the intention of playing back below that.

I would be expecting output similar to Max king this year.

Seems to me that the dream scenario that is a chance of happening is Thilthorpe sliding to our first pick, 6, which then gives us a look at 2 mids.
Getting Thilthorpe would be worth losing out on Perkins.
I'd still grab Cox then figure out pick 8 from there...split, reach for an O'Driscoll, look another mid, start bidding on McInnes, Jones, etc.

Reid may not be the worst option either.
Draft would net us some good spine options.
Thilthorpe (FF)
Eyre (CHF/CHB)
Cox (CHF/CHB/wing?)
Brand (CHB/FB)
Reid (FB/CHB)

Allows one to not work out (as well as Zerk).
Though does go against my preference to pad the middle out.
