These are the ones we've been linked to in pre-season and now in the media:

ANGUS BAKER
Medium defender
191cm/88kg
3/10/98
Essendon VFL

The running half-back trained with Essendon's AFL side in the pre-season in the hope of winning a list spot before the Bombers looked elsewhere. He then signed with the club's VFL team where he has averaged 26 disposals across four games, including a 31-possession outing against North Melbourne last weekend. Formerly part of Sydney's Academy, Baker played NEAFL as a 17-year-old before rupturing his ACL. He later headed to the Canberra Demons, winning the NEAFL Rising Star award in 2019.

COREY PRESTON
Midfielder/forward
182cm/77kg
18/12/02
Eastern Ranges

Emerged as a draft smokey after an impressive showing for Ferntree Gully at local level in 2019 before winning a spot at the Eastern Ranges only for the season to be called off due to COVID-19. Has returned to the Ranges this year and played three games which included a four-goal haul against the Calder Cannons. Preston, who doesn't turn 19 until December, has shown a strong ability to mark above his head for his size and has a smart goal sense. Trained with the Western Bulldogs during the pre-season before the Dogs turned to another Anthony Scott for their last list spot.

These are another couple that I wouldn't mind:

OLIVER DAVIS
Midfielder
183cm/75kg
18/7/02
Adelaide SANFL

The Tasmanian product is firmly on Adelaide's radar with one of their vacant list spots after moving to South Australia this year to play with the Crows' reserves side. He's played just one game to date with instant impact – collecting 26 disposals in a loss to Norwood last week. The 18-year-old ball-winning midfielder won the Matthew Richardson Medal as the Tasmanian State League's best under-23 prospect while playing for Clarence. Davis also captained the Tasmanian Devils' under-18 team as a bottom-ager in 2019.

SAM DURHAM
Midfielder
185cm/75kg
9/7/01
Richmond VFL

There are plenty of clubs considering Durham, who was first eligible for the draft in 2019. He has taken his game up a few notches this season playing for Richmond's VFL side, including a 23-disposal effort in round one against Sandringham. At a versatile size and shape, Durham has been linked to a number of clubs, including the Tigers, who now have a list spot available.

JOSH GREEN
Midfielder
191cm/84kg
24/7/02
GWS VFL

The younger brother of Greater Western Sydney young star Tom, Green is also a budding big-bodied midfielder. He trained with Richmond over the summer as part of the group vying for a pre-season supplemental selection spot, but did not win a place with the Tigers. He has pieced together some good form playing with the Giants' VFL side.

Geez Callow has strong hands. Hooker-esque.
Freeman is such an interesting one. If he truly has finally got his body right and can continue on similar form (if he gets picked up) at AFL level again, he could be an absolute steal.

Kicked to us 16 times when we played them.

I lean to Josh Green as he is different to most of what we have. We have a decent group of ball winning midfielders. We need a bigger type who can do a bit of the strong work and is a decent mark. He also has some forward craft. There are some serious questions about him progressing to AFL level but he is the type of player we have limited of if he comes off.

I am not totally against Baker. Have liked some of his VFL work and he is the type you could develop into a defensive midfielder. It has been hard to judge the VFL form given how inexperienced we are and the amount of personal changes week in and week out.

It would seem that I am going against my converting flanker opinion but in the case of looking for the defensive / strong midfielder we do not need them to have refined midfield skills. The class midfielder we want should be coming via the top end of the draft.

Either of these guys I would not mind but in saying that I have no massive expectations and we could go in a number of directions.

As long as people are considering Freeman with the knowledge that he's a manifestly different player than the strong, linebreaker he entered the AFL as then that's fine, to me injuries have robbed him of the things that made him appealing so I've put a line through him.

We don't really need anything so it's a bit of a freebie, Baker is not the sexy pick but if we want him taking him now frees up a pick in the 40s of 50s at the end of the year to take another kid once there's a bit more exposed form to go on.

Could equally punt on a kid we like, Raak is a defender very much in the mould of what Rutten likes, shorter but mobile, can win it in the air and use it by foot. Preston is still only 18 and could be an untapped talent and there are smalls around like Maher, McKay, Gribble and Thorne who aren't necessarily great fits but may be clearly viewed as the best available talent.

Green sounds like a good one, certainly has the size to be a genuine big body at AFL level, whether the rest of the stuff can get there is the question, but at least it wouldn't be yet another small midfielder. What's the question marks on him?

I think the biggest knock is he is not really great in any one area. He is pretty much a good average player if he makes it. Nothing really special about him.
I know this makes him seem a bit ordinary as a pick but I see him as a player who we may be able to get advantage out of his body size and ability to play a role. Has been on the fringe and just short so far.

Nothing wrong with ordinary, Parish was called vanilla at draft time but vanilla is a perfectly good flavour at times.

Just whether he could fill a role of value at AFL level given he's got the appropriate size and build.

JACKSON CALLOW
Key forward
195cm/96kg
11/6/02
Norwood

The 18-year-old has bolted into contention with a blistering start to the SANFL season, leading the competition in contested marks. The North Launceston product was overlooked in last year's NAB AFL Draft and moved to Norwood to further his chances. His most recent game against the Crows' reserves side netted 3.7 from seven contested marks and 24 disposals. Callow has interest from Collingwood and also trained with Hawthorn in the pre-season before the Hawks chose to select Lachie Bramble with their last list spot.

or

ZAVIER MAHER
Midfielder
185cm/85kg
5/5/02
Murray Bushrangers/Carlton VFL

The explosive ball magnet has wasted little time impacting in his return from a pre-season knee injury. Maher dominated in a win for Goulburn Valley Football League side Shepparton United earlier this month before collecting 30 disposals in his first NAB League game of the season for Murray Bushrangers last weekend. Maher had interest from clubs in last year's NAB AFL Draft but was overlooked before training with Carlton over summer in the hope of winning a list spot.

3.7 in Callow's last game. Might be a true replacement for Joe with kicking like that. Jones is a bust if he keeps kicking at 13.4 pace (after a 0.3 start)

I feel like players like that can become extremely effective if they have the right attitude and are prepared to roll the sleeves up and play their role.

We advised the afl we are only taking 1 selection.
So like we probably will just take the one selection. But, we do have the option to free up more spots before the MSD:

This is where someone like Johnson could end of with a mystery illness and miss the rest of the year
We apparently already have options to take up to two selections, so no need for mystery illnesses (which in any case would mean he can't play at any level for the rest of the year without raising eyebrows).

We've chosen not to, so either our second choice is going to someone who will have a higher pick than us, didn't nominate, or we decided not to take the punt on them after all.
