Draft whispers, rumours & scuttlebut

your first paragraph outlines a lot of good work that sadly has been undone by disgraceful governance, likely doping, salary cap cheating in 1993.

back on topic, there's strong word the hawks will take Dan Rioli if he gets to them in the first round
Salary cap breaching that the whole league was doing. Essendon breached it in 92 with lots of aging stars who retired at the end of the year. They didn't breach it in 93 with a young list, but did in 94 when those young premiership stars got a pay rise.

The supplement scandal was pretty crap, however, the wrong people were targeted by the AFL and the press. Those responsible in order of culpability were: Dank, Robinson, Hamilton/Corcoran*, Robson and Evans. Obviously Dank is coping his whack but how Robinson managed to transfer his blame onto Hird is amazing. I think it was because he was feeding Caro behind the scenes and she was still bitter about the way she was locked out of him getting the job back in 2010.

Corcoran is a wierd one. He isn't that culpable because he was not at work a lot through that time as his wife was battling terminal cancer. Also where I hold Hird responsible for some of this is his insistence on Corcoran working at the club which caused the bluring between him and Hamilton.

Reid, Hird and Thompson have some culpability but the fact they asked for Dank to be sacked early and Evans rejection of this because of cost of paying him out ...

let's not make this about the disgraceful behaviour by your club in the supplements saga, i'm sure you're happy to admit your club shat the bed.

It seems when it comes to cheating you're willing to spread the love with "everyone did it" but when it comes to community contributions Essendon's just great. Of course, being founded out as social clubs it's a pretty "everyone did it" situation anyway.

back on the thread topic, the dogs are big fans of Ben Mckay, but i'm sure a few of us are nervous he won't make it to our pick

Heard Essendon aren't keen on Curnow at all.

Oliver wants to get to the Tigers.
Just like Lennon wanted Carlton in his draft year as he barracked for the Blues, so all you are really telling us is Oliver barracks for the Tigers! Carlton will take him at 11 if he lasts that long but more likely we take him at 8.
Who cares what a school kid wants... You get what you are given!

Lennon trained with the Tigers and wanted to be drafted by us. Not saying he would never have played for Carlton or didn't want to either.

Interesting to see if Carlton picks him up. Curnow, Oliver and Mathieson all potentially available at 8 and/ or 11. Oliver seems to be almost the en vogue name at the moment.

Would be a very good addition to your midfield youth stocks.

He's so tempting, I even think he's worthy of pick 5 from Essendon. Just got so much Ollie Wines/D Martin about him and he tested really well at the combine even though he's not in the best shape - imagine if he bulked up and filled out his body a bit.

That said, I think he won't last any longer than Richmond's pick. Unless you guys feel as though you need some class in Ah Chee/Milera/Balic sort of players?

Well I see it as interesting discussion between Curnow and Oliver.

Dan Richardson (our list manager) basically said we go for best player available with our first pick, though indicated that there were some small forwards worthy of looking at. The common consensus is Oliver first and foremost if he's available - though it is unlikely.

After that, maybe Ah Chee or Gresham. Though theres some strengthening rumours regarding Burton.

Not sure if Schache really should be who we draft I guess because he's a forward he's linked to us but Carlton could easily draft him at 1 and Collins at 11

Carlton will take the best player at pick 1, that is Jacob Weitering, period.

Yeah but I don't want Schache and think people are overrating Weitering

Maybe so, but in my book if you take out the Academy selections...Weitering is in my book the 'surest bet'. If I were betting on a bloke who I know will get 200+ games, he is the one. Plus he has one other thing that is often downplayed- leadership and you can't put a price on that.

Supports the lions.

You sound ignorant. We didn't force him to get a quad injury and miss the combine. We didn't force him to train with Hooker. We didn't force clubs to overlook him in the draft.
I would hope not. Then it would go from being draft tampering to being assault causing bodily harm, unlawful imprisonment and torture!

No they weren't.
In 1996, Essendon were fined a record $638,250 ($250,000 in back tax and penalties, $112,000 for draft tampering and $276,250 for breaching the salary cap regulations), forfeited their first, second and third round picks in the National Draft and were excluded from the 1997 rookie and pre-season drafts after a joint Australian Tax Office and AFL investigation found that they had committed serious and systematic breaches of the salary cap regulations totalling $514,500 between 1991 and 1996.
